  • Celiac Disease Signs & Symptoms | Nutrient Deficiencies & Why Symptoms Happen
Celiac disease is an autoimmune gastrointestinal disorder that causes damage/destruction/injury to the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to issues with absorption (malabsorption). Due to this underlying pathophysiological mechanism, celiac disease can cause a wide variety of vitamin/nutrient deficiencies and a very long list of signs and symptoms. In this lesson, we discuss these vitamin and nutrient deficiencies and also describe why many signs and symptoms occur.

Took me ten years to finally get a diagnosis of Celiac disease. Thank goodness there’s a lot of GF options out there now. Yes , I have osteoporosis. Yes, I have IBS. Yes, I have diarrhea. Yes, I experience stomach and back pain. I try very hard to watch what a I eat. If I do consume gluten, I suffer nasty reactions. I avoid milk, drinking Lactaid or Almond milk instead. I take Calcium, Vit D, B12, Potassium and Magnesium. I try to eat plenty of vegetables, avocados, fruit, and GF Oatmeal with flaxseeds. Now my BP is going up, so I am adding in foods to try and bring it down naturally. Good luck to all of you who have been diagnosed with this disease. It does take diligence, but you can do it!

I was recently diagnosed with coeliac disease. I am 30, my symptoms started about 15 years ago but there was no gut symptoms or weight loss, just anemia/fatigue/headaches/depression. SO no one ever thought to check for coeliac BECAUSE I didn’t think I had any gut symptoms. I think it’s important to highlight that you don’t have to be bloated and pooping constantly to have this disease so if you have any unexplained anemia or tiredness or low mood - get checked!!

My mom has had migraines since age 9. She's now in her 70s. About 20yrs ago she was dx with celiac. It took 10yrs to get a diagnosis. She had various symptoms but was seeing different drs for them (neuro, derm, blood, ortho etc) so no one had put them all together. When she got the skin rash I told her that was a celiac symptom (had read about it) and along with the other S/S she had, celiac seemed very likely. She asked for testing and the rest is history. She later had to have a foot of bowel removed because of all the damage that occurred before diagnosis. She's doing great now!

Don’t stop eating gluten until a doctor tells you to!! You need to have been eating gluten in a balanced diet for 6+ weeks before you get your blood tests and biopsy so that they can confirm the diagnosis. If you stop before your tests, your gut might heal and they will think there’s nothing wrong with you. But I guess if you do go gluten free and it works for you and your quality of life improves, diagnosis isn’t the most important thing ever. However if you live in certain parts of the UK a diagnosis will help you get gluten free food on prescription so it is worth pursuing :)

As far as calcium supplements go, you won't need them if you're taking vitamin D. D and calcium work together in the body. In fact, most of the time people who take a lot of vitamin D need to lower the dosage not because of having too high of a vitamin D level, but because calcium levels can get too high. In reality osteoporosis is 100% because of a vitamin D deficiency. Glad you are feeling better

Note that rice flour does have a form of gluten called orzenin and corn has a gluten protein called zein, so avoiding the purchase of "g/f foods" using these grains would help . Ate a lot of bananas. As I grew older, I didn’t have any issues. It wasn’t until I was 27. Corse I don’t remember much before I was 10. That I was celiac, didn’t understand why I kept getting sick. No one said anything to about it. I finally found out in my 40’s. Why didn’t my mother tell me. I know now about everything what I went through when I was born. I felt robbed of soo many years of eating great food, then loosing in. Couldn’t keep weight on. Geez, some people parents.

how would parents know if even doctors don't know? I was given baby food tiktok was
LOADED with wheat because doctors back they said it was good for a baby who was constantly sick on their stomach and couldn't digest very well., and that it was very "nutritious". I probably got my intolerance triggered or worsened back then and it probably affected my development a lot. But my doctors and parents were doing what they thought was better for me, because they were taught that by someone else.

My mum is really dismissive of my diagnosis and makes weird comments like “yes I suppose it is serious for some people” as if my coeliac isn’t as serious as other people’s haha. Humans are weird. The pediatricians PA scolded me that I needed to get the constipation under control. I responded… I have tried natural remedies, medication, and done everything you have told me to do. It works for 2 weeks and stops. Do you think it could be something in her diet?! …. And that’s when she was tested and her panels came back off the charts per the PA. Only afterwards did we realize her fatigue, dark circles under her eyes, and behavioral issues were part of it also.

Thank you so much you have answered all my questions about what is going on with my body. This is new to me, and I have diarrhea and it happens without me even knowing it is happening. So embarrassing and uncontrollable. I am at the beginning of testing for Celiac disease and all that you teach about this I am experiencing now. This has been going on since April 2022 and getting worth. Do you recommend keeping a food journal to see what triggers the disease?

    • @eilzmo
      @eilzmo Před rokem

If you have coeliac disease you don’t need a food diary - it’s triggered by gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and potentially any product that is processed in an environment that also processes wheat/barley/rye. Also if you’ve had this for a while, the damage to your gut means that it doesn’t really matter what you eat. Your villi will be so damaged you’ll have diarrhoea no matter what you eat, until you stop eating gluten and your gut gets a chance to heal and start absorbing nutrients again.
You should follow the advice of the doctor testing you - don’t add or remove anything from your diet based on internet advice. Hope you get on well and your health improves :)

I am so hypersensitive that I have to feed my pets gluten free food so that I don't get "glutened" I have dermatitis herpetiformis, and fall in the small percentage of Celiacs that gain weight instead of loosing weight. Gluten cannot touch my skin without developing welts, so asking people to wash their hands has become a must. I also changed out all of my personal care products to gluten free products. I'm the same, extremely sensitive to gluten. It's just as you say - I have to make sure that even pet food and personal care products are glutenfree. I cannot got to places like bakeries or restaurants or the supermarket aisle where the wheat products are kept.
I have all the other symptoms that are typical of Celiac as well, such as alopecia, infertility, hormone problems, malnutrition etc - though strangely enough, I'm also one of the very few Celiacs who put on weight rather than loose it. If I were to eat a normal diet, I'd be morbidly obese in no time. Before I switched to a glutenfree diet I suffered from severe diarrhea, extreme stomach pain and abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, severe bloating and severe fatigue.
I had absolutely no help from my doctors who have throughout my life insisted I was lying, imagining everything, too stupid to know how to consume a healthy diet, attention seeking, stuffing myself with sugary foods and very spicy food all day long, anorexic, bulimic, alcoholic, ripping my own hair out etc etc etc. None of these things are true. It often resulted in very upsetting scenes such as me being forced to bring witnesses along to the doctors to confirm that I do eat and don't make myself sick on purpose to avoid getting falsely diagnosed with a mental illness - very difficult when one lives only with pets which I did at the time. Most doctors shouted at me insisting that they were right and when I didn't agree, I got kicked out the office and the doctors wrote on my medical records that I was allegedly "difficult, argumentative and a trouble maker".
Despite being on a glutenfree diet for nearly twenty years now, my bowels still react to everything I eat, though nowhere near as badly as before I changed diet.

Back when I was diagnosed they did a vitamin test and I was fine in everything but defefficient in D3 and was told to up to 2000. I will be fifty in a couple months and I have a hard time losing weight. I dont know if that's because of something with the Celiac or hormones. I went to the dr asking for a gluten test and was given a regular blood test and basically labeled as depressed cause i was heavier (but the dr was obese id say.. so look at that ignorance and double standard😒) so i was gaslighted, ignored, probably didnt believe people are celiac, and never even given a gluten allergy test which was the whole purpose of me going to the dr in the first place. So i just self diagnosed myself by going gluten free and noticing how it helped me for 4 years.
Even the dermatologist in 2022 gave me the "okayyyyy" face response that my eczema is caused by my gluten diet which i clearly acknowledge. Like diet causes lots of problems that are seen as woo woo to drs 😒. Whatever, i know what triggers my eczema even though their response was "maybe the shampoos" even though it really is the gluten and now I'd say SUGAR too. Cause it went away when i was keto for 2 weeks lol.
I was off last 2 years and managing (fairly well) with herbal acid pills and gluten digestives.. besides the IBS-D and anxiety before big jobs..
I have to get back on the gluten diet now though cause i had a terrible case of food poisoning from fast food which lasted 2 months and now almost 4 months later, my gut is still terribly destoryed and no pills are managing it so yeah i literally must go gluten free again 😬😬😬
My pet peeve though, is that even though i diagnosed myself as celiac 7 years ago, there STILL is not gluten free food availability. But yet the vegan availability is much more!! Its not that difficult to offer gluten free bread, even prepackaged at restaurants. But there are no options near my workplace when i go out with coworkers. And im certainly not going to spend $10 on some cooked eggs, no bread or bacon lol. Im not spending $20 on a GF pizza at work either when the wheated option is $5. Im not paying $14 for a bowl at subway when i can get a 6in sub for $6 lol. I'll prob stick to those 200 calorie protein bars as a meal replacement so i can go out with my coworkers. Not eat anything but just enjoy their company :/ :(. Its upsetting that gluten free has been more publicly known compared to years ago and this ignorance and lack of options still is going on for people who really need to opt gluten free... and yes i did mention it to the restaurants but will they offer GF bread for $2 more? No. I did think about bringing my own bread but like nah i dont want to deal with any of that and any way. How ridiculous. So the protein bars seem like the solution at this point.... so i can still participate in going out and dining at work..
I know im rambling on but its shocking!!! I even went to a BREAD shop in Greece, people who should definitely offer gluten free cause its their profession and industry!!!! Nope no GF option. Shocking. Absolutely shocking!!! Thats quite normal actually. Even in the states, not all bakerys and bread shops even have gluten free!!! But they will have vegan more likely lol!

A blood test will confirm Coeliac disease. I had to have a biobsy. I almost died of pernicious anaemia, I would only have survived another day. Coeliac disease was causing the problem. So get your bloods checked. I was in my late thirties when I got diagnosed after a lifetime of pain and suffering, was thin as a rake too. At 65 I was finally diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I believe I was born with both conditions, but doctors then knew next to nothing about food and disease. I'm 80 now, no longer thin.I have many food intolerances but stick to a very strict diet so I'm now asymptomatic, have very few flare ups and I can control them myself. Just occasionally I need to take steroids, which work brilliantly at getting me back to normal. You can live a normal life if you are very care about what you eat.

Hi Bethan, Have you've tested for Celiac Disease yet? It's a simple, inexpensive blood test. A lot of the symptoms you've mentioned are the symptoms I too suffered through, mostly starting in my early 40's, I am now 61 years old. I had the reverse of what you had - I had diarrhea several times a day for YEARS - I was so exhausted all the time because I was not absorbing any nutrients from what I was eating.
The doctors were no help, they would just throw pills at the problem and the pills made it so much worse!
Finally, I was so frustrated with the last doctor's pitiful assessment that I went on the internet and typed in my symptoms - "Celiac Disease" kept coming up as an answer. When I read the description lots of the symptoms were my symptoms. I wasn't until I REQUESTED from my doctor that I wanted a Celiac Disease blood test, that I knew for sure that I tested positive for Celiac Disease.
Once I stopped eating gluten, within 3 days it was MAGICAL how much better I felt. I lost 15 pounds within 3 weeks because I did not have extreme INFLAMMATION going on in my gut as much. Of course, I wasn't completely healthy right off the bat BUT I was FEELING so much better.
Then I started my health journey to get better as I still had other MAJOR symptoms, such as Chronic Fatigue, hair loss, crappy nails, body and joint pains all over my body, memory/cognitive issues, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc. When the doctor suggested another blood test to check my Vitamin D3 levels - I had severely low levels - this explained a LOT of the symptoms I was suffering with.
I started taking 15,000 IU's of Vitamin D3 daily and within days my body and joint pains were disappearing, my hair and nails started to improve, it improved my chronic fatigue a little, etc. I STILL take this amount daily as it is so beneficial for my daily health. In my health journey research, I was finding out that if you are deficient in Vitamin D3 you are MOST likely to be deficient in Magnesium too. And once I started to take Magnesium - it was like night and day the results!
I, personally, take 15,000 IU's of Vitamin D3 daily, (1) Magnesium Malate 425mg daily and (1) Vitamin K2/MK-7 90 mcg daily. These are my main supplements, I do take four more supplements, but these I just mentioned will IMPROVE your health right off the bat.
I hope this information helps you in YOUR health journey. 😊💖

I am also allergic to grass, pollen etc but INTOLERANT for GLUTEN and WHEAT. This is called intolerancy not allergies. Offcourse we as rare disease auto immune sufferers can only get better if we stop gluten and wheat. The rest you have to do allergy test. Lactose is also an intolerancy not an allergy. I follow a vegan/vegetarian diet and let it be known its dangerous as im plantbased and a gluten free wheat free human being thats almost impossible. SO DONT TRY THIS AT HOME WITHOUT A DOCTOR OR YOUR DIETIST please. Most people can eat gluten with being plantbased but i cannot its medical. I wish their was a pill but there wont be.
