Teaching Your Horse to Stop Off Your Seat...Again!

  • We covered this subject a few years ago on a bay mare but we thought we would revisit it with Cinder. He's a 6 year old horse from Baja that had been ridden in a tie down. Pat wants the horse to learn to tune in to his rider's seat rather than relying on pulling on the reins. This doesn't mean that you ride with a big loop in your rein all the time. The horse still has to learn to carry himself in collection. But this exercise is the foundation of everything else we teach horses that have been ridden for miles and whose riders rarely used their bodies to communicate with their horses. Remember, it's ugly before it's pretty so hang in there until the end. For more information, visit our website, www.thediscipli... . "How well can I present myself to my horse" is what I think every training session. Thanks guys 🤠

"If you wanna get up and throw up or whatever that's fine. . ." and "There's a group for that on Tuesday." Laughing helps the learning, Pat. Thanks for that.

Great training session, thanks for sharing! Love how you teach him to move off of snaffle pressure and seat. You can clearly see the overdeveloped under neck muscle from being ridden in a tie down 😐but so great to see how you teach him to find the right answer and release him. Awesome to see what you can do in relatively short time, thanks again for making these videos 👍

I always ask the horse if I can get on! Good to know I do things like a professional horseman. I've learned to do the breathing thing from Pat, as well. It really works.

I do not think you can REPEAT THIS STUFF TOO MUCH .. AS with ALL horse training, REPETITION is one of the KEYS, another is REPEAT IT LOTS correct...the horse WILL figure ti out .. Just do it correctly and do it a LOT and pretty soon it will REALLY be Good ..thank YOU both for putting in the time to show us all this FANTASTIC information.. You guys are GREAT

Horses will try a lot of "stuff" as they figure out the right answer to something they don't know (or, something they've been taught wrong). That "stuff" is usually pretty ugly. You gotta go through the tunnel as they say, there's no cake without broken eggs. I find that often, the longer it takes for a horse to figure out the right answer, the more the concept sticks with him when he finally does. Because doing all the wrong "stuff" and getting no release, makes the release for the right answer mean so much more

We are one of the few horse channels that takes the time to answer viewer questions and I don’t mind at all answering questions that are pertinent to our videos. But when it comes to really basic things like terminology, I do appreciate it when people can do some research on their own to expand their knowledge. Then we can have conversations that might help our viewers grasp horsemanship concepts. Once you have an idea of what a cricket is, let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks to Sassy Pants for jumping in and helping out! Your answer is correct.
