How to create a positive team culture w your baseball team | Foster leadership and teamwork

Coach Duke Baxter and Coach Steve Nikorak share their thoughts on how to create a positive team culture with your baseball team, instill leadership in the athletes at a young age and foster teamwork amongst your players.
One of the first things that’s needed to build a positive team culture is clear expectations that the players understand. A way that we have found to not only make sure our players understand their responsibilities but give individual players a chance to lead is what we call the “Lead Hawks”. We are the Zoned RedHawks and the Lead Hawks are responsible for leading the team stretches, the team batting practice routine and even making sure the dugouts are clean. We select 2 new Lead Hawks per week. They make sure all tasks are completed right down to picking up the baseballs and getting them into the bucket after practice.
We expect our RedHawks to be clean and organized and leave the fields and facilities we use the same way. Not only are they clear of the expectations but they show us and their teammates they are through their leadership.
Another way we foster teamwork and build a positive team culture is through the use of phrases and mottos that we can all get behind. In the past, we’ve used the phrase, “all out” to describe the behavior and attitude that we expect. We go “all out” when we’re on the field, off the field or in the dugout. We go “all out” cheering for our teammates and with every pitch that comes to us.
