    Thank you for all information and support! I think I am in the similar situation like you were. I have been exercising for 6 years (not too hard, but it may be hard FOR ME.) I enjoy muscle soreness, being exhausted after a massive exercise. I am really restless and nervous when I have to stop. But I feel I should. My female hormones are too low, but I would like to have a baby in the near future. I am not extreme skinny (I was, and I realized I need to gain for my health). Now I am just a bit underweight - maybe 4-5 kg that I need. My BMI is about 19, some experts say it’s in the normal range, I think a bit more would be optimal. According to your advice I try to stop lifting weights and running (at least for a period of time) and doing some „relaxing” movement.

    I am so glad I found your channel. I could not relate to you more. I became faster after college, love running, but lost a ton of weight, had disordered eating habits, and haven't had a period in over a year. I'm a physician assistant student, so clearly I knew what the problem was. I pretended like I was dealing with it by "eating a little more" but continued to run quite a bit, simply because I see myself as a "runner" and didn't know how to stop. Now, I've decided to put my running on hold ( sad face) to gain the weight I need & get my period back. If I decided to return to running, much less mileage & more rest days will certainly be in my future. Thank you for your channel.

      @@jillcolangelopsych acaseofthejills kind of late, but thank you!! Today my fourth period came, yay! I've got a little update about my lifestyle. I eat a lot of healthy, nourishing foods. Carbs, protein, fats. I don't restrict myself at all and still eat intuitively. I eat nothing with added sugar though, since my body doesn't crave it. I've been on a moderate strength training program for a month. I've maintained my weight since the last time I commented. Unfortunately negative thoughts do pop up occasionally; "I ate way too many carbs today, not enough x and y", "I should drop 2kg to look better" (even though I shouldn't really be worried about the number on the scale since I'm gaining muscle). I really need to work on my mental state - sadly I'm still not free.

    Hello Jill! Thank you for another informative video on HPA. I wanted to ask you; what about weight lifting? I train around 4-5 times/week lifting weights and not doing cardio. Do you think lifting weights is a barrier from getting a period?

    • @jillcolangelopsych
      @jillcolangelopsych  Před 7 lety

      It really depends. If you lost your period on this amount of exercise, logic would say that a reduction is advisable. The test will be: if you don't get your period or have symptoms...you might want to try to decrease. You have to ask yourself why you want to or need to continue to train. If it is for a "preserve my fitness/body" standpoint...you might want to do some thinking on why you feel this pressure. In order to make changes that will benefit our health long term, we have to dig into all of these deeper issues. It's usually not just about the workout... Ya know what I mean? XO

      acaseofthejills Thank you sooo much for your reply! 😇I think stress (⬆cortisol levels) is the initial cause of my HA. 4 yrs ago doctors said i had pcos (period twice in a month) and that i needed to exercise and lose weight. Well, I did! Then, due to restrictive eating and exercise (not excessive i have to say cause i didn't have enough energy to do it) i eventually had no period! Now, i'm confused on which of these 3 or a combo of these (or all of them!) is the real cause for my HA. 😕

      @jillcolangelopsych  Před 7 lety +17

      I absolutely have heard of this and it is more common than you think... Extreme hunger is a part of the recovery process and will diminish as time goes on. Your body is just trying to get itself nourished and since it is a lot smarter than we are...it will blast you with tricks like crazy hunger and cravings to get what it needs. This is a good thing! Once the body feels it is out of danger of famine, it will calm down. This has nothing to do with your starting body weight at all... Trust your body! It wants you to be healthy! XO

    Thanks for making this video. I've been recovering from amenorrhea since last summer. I had a couple of real periods (i.e. not artificially induced by birth control), but haven't for a couple of months now. I know restrictive eating and weight loss contributed to my initial loss of periods and weight gain helped bring them back for a little. I wonder if exercise has any impact in my case. I don't think I exercise excessively or intensively, but maybe what I do do (4x a week of strength/light cardio videos) is too much for my body presently?

    • @jillcolangelopsych
      @jillcolangelopsych  Před 6 lety +1

      There is no way to know how much is "too much" for your body until it tells you. If your cycle continues to be irregular...it's quite possible that your body is, in fact, trying to tell you something. Most women have an instinct about what habits they have that contribute to not getting their period. When they ignore those instincts, things do not improve. The only way to know if it's too much is to reduce drastically and see what happens! Let me know how you do! XO

    • @jillcolangelopsych
      @jillcolangelopsych  Před 7 lety +3

      I can totally understand that not all exercise/movement is going to make us feel the same. You are your best evidence in this case... If switching to this different type of exercise does not yield the result of getting your period back, you might want to change it up again. I find that walking outside makes me feel pretty amazing and I can do it while maintaining my health...a win-win for me. Keep trying to find what works for you!

I've been fat my whole life and I wanna be better but if it can destroy my over all health I may lessen it somehow, right?
    so to bring back my period or have it regular you are advising to maybe just move your body so that you can still burn some calories? and can I gradually get back when it's regular?

    • @TheaTheGenius
      @TheaTheGenius Před 3 lety +2

      Suuuper later reply, but check out Kayla Rose Kotecki's video on this. She advises to drop exercise completely until you get your period back. HA is caused by elevated cortisol: exercise heavily stimulates the production of cortisol. So in order to lessen the impact you need to take it out. Absolutely no HIIT or other high-intensity cardio. You can keep movement to a minimum, like light walking for 30-60min once every few days, or light yoga as Jill recommends. However, if you equate either of those with training then you're more likely to push yourself ultra-hard and that can be counterproductive, and turn the light movement into high intensity one (for example, I took walking to a whole new level. I basically used it as cardio, always maintaining a pace slightly below jogging, always forced myself to reach 20k+ steps a day, even when I was dying of exhaustion). So choose something you won't even consider exercise. If that doesn't help, drop it completely.

      Just going on walks is good to keep your body moving whilst not putting too much stress on it. You might also want to check your TDEE (you can search online) to see how much you should be eating because you could be severely under-eating as well which would also cause your period to stop. Also if people are bullying you because of how you look it's obviously a projection of their own insecurities and (whilst obviously it's disgusting of them that they're doing it) you gotta remember that they're probably just really bored and insecure and I know it can be hard but you should love yourself no matter what!
