      My grandma did that when I told her that i had started practicing witchcraft, she just interrupted me with, “you know this isn’t real, right??” And I felt very offended because she then compared it to religion, saying it was “all something somebody made up to make them feel better, just like religion.”

      Exactly my thoughts lol tho it might just be because i was Wiccan before I became Christian. I mean, look at their wideo where they cuffed a Satanist and a Christian together - they literally did what you described. It's not even being stuck up, it's just asking for a bit of respect and open-mindedness for a project that claims to promote those two things. I just feel like there's a time n place for everything. To be fair tho, i believe the people who participated are all vocal atheists. Not saying atheists are bad (because some like Jaclyn are respectful of it), but they pretty much just shit on any religion unless it's one that promotes a particular tone (like Satanism, which they dubbed "basically Atheism").

    When the guy said about putting his cross necklace away, it reminded me of when I went to wedding (traditional Christian type) and my mom told me to put my pentacle necklace away before we went. It made me angry, not because I was trying to be “disrespectful” by wearing it, but because it is something that I wore as kind of a talisman of protection, especially during that time in my life. Like, I feel like that’s kind of the same thing as telling a Christian that they can’t wear a crucifix. It shouldn’t matter where I’m at, I should be able to wear something that makes me feel safer and more comfortable.

    • @thylis75
      @thylis75 Před 4 lety +125

      I do understand where you're coming from, but..it's a christian wedding. If I were christian and I would go to a muslim wedding, I wouldn't wear a cross necklace, for example, just out of respect for the muslims at the wedding. You could just wear it underneath your clothing or put it in your pocket or handbag or just somewhere where it can't be seen. I don't think your mom is being unreasonable by requesting that.

    • @user-fm1rg4iy6r
      @user-fm1rg4iy6r Před 4 lety +73

      Kind of funny since the pentacle literally originated from jewish and christian faith. In the bible the archangel Raphael gifted a ring with a pentacle to king Solomon (who is a respected figure in abrahamic religions) as a means of protection. It's thought that the pentagram's five points represent the five wounds of Jesus Christ.

    Honestly, BuzzFeed really shouldn't be dipping their toes in topics as controversial as religion. It's a serious topic, deserving of respect; people dedicate their entire lives to these kinds of things. My personal pagan/witch path is the most important thing in my life. If anyone is going to make a video to present a religious minority to a public audience, then at least do your research and learn the basics. Treat it respectfully. Be educated. The reason people feel so comfortable joking about it is because the pagan/wiccan/occultist movement IS a minority; and these people are the majority. They can laugh and make fun because they know the majority doesn't understand this religion and thinks it's "out there" or a bunch of "woo woo". That is disrespectful. I don't think it would have seemed as "acceptable" for them to act that way in a video about a major organized religion. They didn't do anyone any favors; and I have no problem saying they did an awful job and should have never made this video. They should stick to comedy-- or whatever they produce.

      I feel exactly the same. Main religions usually don't get mock for their rituals and beliefs but we do. It's a pity that nowadays you can't feel comfortable sharing that you're pagan/witch with people in general. My family is very eclectic when it comes to religion so I never had issues with my parents, but some people has told me how can I practice witchcraft having higher education and high IQ it's really offensive I haven't let it bother me, I have thick skin but it's amazing how little people care about tact and good manners when it come to our religious beliefs. The fact that most of us don't let this kind of mocking or mindless remarks affect us, doesn't make it right.

      I mean, I've seen loads of particularly Latinos who basically do make Catholicism an aesthetic. I've seen Latino guys in particular who wear their rosaries like they were an ordinary crucifix necklace, which is not supposed to be allowed in Catholicism. A crucifix or a cross is a piece of jewelry, which is representative of your faith but not a religious symbol/tool. A rosary is often blessed, and is an important symbol of the faith, meant to be used as a tool during prayer, etc. And this isn't even taking into account how many people I've seen with rosaries printed on T-shirts, or as tattoos, and the casual aesthetic of depictions of the Virgin of Guadalupe on clothing and as tattoos. It's out there...it's just done in a way that's "acceptable" to the public, because people don't see the difference between cross/crucifix/rosary and just think they're all necklaces, and don't have a problem with the images of saints plastered onto whatever. Plus, Christian symbols are totally okay, because it's just representing their faith.
      Meanwhile, often times when someone tries to make "Wicca" an aesthetic, it's tacky and feels like someone dressing up in a costume, and is just opening the real Pagans/Wiccans/etc. up to being mocked or told their faith isn't real, or otherwise being treated as fakes because they *don't* adhere to this particular "Wiccan look," or because "Don't all 'witches' dress up like it's Halloween?"

Wizard actually means someone who is wise in all ways. The -ard suffix means someone who is habitually a certain way. A drunkard always seems drunk, a coward always cowers and a wizard is wise in all ways, a wise-ard. This is why the magi (pronounced maj + long "I") (AKA magicians) in the bible are often referred to as wise men. They were master astrologists in fact.

To break that oath of secrecy, makes one an oath-breaker and that would be synonymous with the term "warlock". To call someone a "warlock" then, would be to call them a traitor and an oath-breaker. In modern times, the term "warlock" (mainly in the fantasy genre, in books, films and series, and in video games) has also come to mean a mage (typically male) who has strayed from the teachings of his forefathers and broke away from their magical tradition, or one who uses the magical knowledge that was taught to him in an evil way, as a means of gaining power or revenge. In any case, the word carries a negative connotation and it would probably be an insult to call someone a "warlock", unless, of course, they are one.

I really enjoy talking to Christians with an open mind and it's really fun to compare religions and try to find the differences and similarities. I find some Christians are really strong with their "you worship satan!!!!!!" belief and it does make it difficult to talk to people about Wicca because you feel invalidated cause it's not (for lack of a better term) a "mainstream" religion and they feel it's not one at all because of that or have deep-rooted misconceptions. I've just today started my year and a day of study to become Wiccan and feel split completely between feelings of joy and sadness. I was raised on Christian principles though my family are not very religious and I have always identified as agnostic with a leaning towards Christianity, however, after learning about Wicca it seems so natural and pure and just seems to make sense.
    This has made me very happy as I feel like I've reconnected with a part of myself that I lost long ago, and it's giving me a safe place to appreciate nature in the midst of this climate crisis, however, it's also making me feel quite isolated as there are so few Wiccans compared to other religions and I feel like people will just think I'm doing it to seem alternative and seek attention (I'm already vegan and low impact which I get shit about regularly and I'm worried that announcing my new beliefs will just gain me eye rolls). Because of this I haven't told anyone I'm Wiccan, and I'm not sure I ever will.
    Another thing that is getting me down is that I can find barely any information about Wicca/ nature worship that predates Gardner. Although I admire him and his work I feel like one of the most drawing things about Wicca is that our ancestors would have been Wiccan and it stems from an innate love of nature which humans have always had. It being referred to as a new religion makes me feel like people don't take it as seriously and I want to know more about its origins pre Gardner so if anyone has any info on that please leave me links and suggestions down below.
    I don't really know what this comment is, I guess I just needed to put my thoughts out in the world since I don't speak about this with anyone in my real life, but thanks for reading if you've got this far.

      That's because Wicca is a new religion. It was developed in the 50s. You'd have to look back at Pagan stuff. As much as some people like to believe they're uncovering an ancient religion, Wicca is simply a new take on old pagan beliefs. I'm not saying that makes it any less valid - just that that's the truth behind it.

We don’t have very strong representation in the mainstream and often I see people co-opting the term in strange ways. Also, I don’t think you were harsh at all; if anything, I might have been harsher at Buzzfeed’s irrelevant and disrespectful attitude. I understand your desire to be understanding and it’s good to not be too easily offended, but I do think a greater respect on their part is owed simply because they approached the pagan community, not the other way around. Witches/pagans as a whole never proselytize, try to convert, or seek to impose their beliefs politically or otherwise into others, so there’s simply no reason to approach us with disrespect. Perhaps that was not Buzzfeed’s intent, but surely anyone can understand why it would come across that way with all the joking and overall flippant attitude. Anyhow, wonderful video as always! xx

      Right? If they did this video with say, Christianity, Buzzfeed would be publicly lynched. But with Wicca they think it's okay?

    I'm more of an Occultist but I feel that the ritual they did raised absolutely no power .

      @Havokwreaker Před 5 lety +45

      That's mostly because of the Buzzfeed people bringing doubt and negativity into the circle/ ritual, thus completely negating any power that could've been gained.

      I think it was a mix of the Buzzfeed people bringing negativity/doubt into the ritual and the witch herself not genuinely trying (as in she herself wasn't putting any power into it) because she knew it wouldn't be taken seriously either by the people in the video and by most of Buzzfeed's "fans" save for the people who thought they were going to take it seriously in the first place.

    I feel like people mix up the religion of Wicca and the practice of witchcraft, which is easy enough. While it goes against christian beliefs to be a Wiccan Christian, it is pretty much up for debate if someone can be a christian who practices witchcraft.

      All Christians practice witchcraft, they just don't know it, most people don't. A prayer itself is a spell. And that's just one thing .

      The coldest day of the year where I live is usually in January. The lowest temperature I remember is -13 last year. That sounds chilly! I hope you can stay warm as you can this coming winter. Are you having lots of snow there? We had an early one in the US Midwest.
