Land Rovers suck for reliability, but they are great for memorable experiences, like the time you broke down here or there.
I'm a mechanic, range Rover is one of the worst cars
You are telling the truth because nobody seems to even want to work on them .. they always send you to the dealer 🙄
They are also in nz where a majority of the old ones are already thrashed and stupidly expensive to fix.

If your worried about breaking down why on earth would you buy a Land Rover.
Same reason Ole boy got those kiddy drawings tattooed randomly all over his legs 😂
As car enthusiasts my face went 😬 when they bought a Land Rover. That thing is a rolling time bomb of repairs. But hey if y’all like repairing it then I can’t hate
I was a pro street artist for close to 15 yrs. lived and traveled out of several vehicles. the first was a 1990 Toyota corolla that I converted. I took the seats out besides the drivers, put two blocks of wood on the floorboards and cut a piece of plywood to fit. put a futon in, cut posterboard for window covers and attached them with velcro. worked like a charm. I did a cross country trip. making money and living comfortably the whole time, and lived in cali for several summers in it. when my parents finally gave me a minivan in 2009 it was a major upgrade.
This is so inspiring. I've been wanting a van but this proves I don't need a expensive van
Nothing beats a house even how small it is and a reliable vehicle. If you want to go outside you have your reliable vehicle. If you want to stay home you have your house/apartment.
Some state……..mine they are taxed out of homes
$7k this year for my very ordinary house
AND YET YOU HAVE THE INFLATION RATES DUE TO COVID THAT HAVE SKYROCKETED THE COST OF RENT. NOWADAYS IN ORDER TO WVEN OWN A HOUSE YOU HAVE TO HAVE SAVED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS JUST TO PAY YOUR MORTGAGE RATE AT ANYWHERE FROM $2000+. We too have a transit ford high roof van(2020)lots of mileage but we love it and still going strong traveling all over USA.
The ford is far better than the rover as far as not breaking down so often
Me and my partner camp in her rav 4 that I built a sleeping platform in, takes 10 mins to set up with the car completely loaded to the gills with stuff but it’s surprisingly comfortable for 2
You just gave me heaps of hope because I just bought me an unconverted Mazda Bongo which is very basic. I’ll place a single mattress in the back and grab a small stove, saucepan and kettle, and I will start my adventure

@@Brayden51222Good luck youth, I'll be doing the same soon for similar reason, mortgage interst rate ridiculous, let alone bills. I'm 52 :)
@Brayden51222 Good luck youth, my reply was for you, that I accidentally replied to someone else. I'll be doing the same, my mortgage has gone up by two & & half times, due to interest rates, they're barely putting down despite inflation falling massively! They're doing what they say - "You'll have nothing, & be happy."! It is unsustainable!. We've bought a Berlingo, we'll get it ready, in time I hope, we'll make do with what we have. All the best 👌 ✌️
I think that Land Rover is gonna break down faster than the first one.
Understanding your limitations is the first step. Kudos to you guys. I am a mechanic and even i don't want to fix that truck you got there on my off time 😂 always think about how much money will the repair cost you even if you do it yourself. That's how i shop for my vehicle.
I admire this because I too went from a van to a tiny little Prius and for all the reasons you guys were nervous with the van, so was I and this Prius is so reliable I actually go more places the gas is cheaper by far . I certainly miss being able to just park and you’re done as far as setting up camp, but the trade-off is much more adventures
you traded a Chevy FOR A LAND ROVER BECAUSE YOU WERE CONCERNED OF BREAKING DOWN!?!?!?!? HELLO
Exactly!! I have a GX 470 and find it just as comfortable as the van I had. Plus it’s 4 wheel drive.
Your adventures look fun. Not sure I could do it full time. I have a 2008 Tacoma and pull a T@G teardrop. Best of both worlds. Reliable and minimal.
Love all your adventures
Pretty scenery
I plan on buying a 2005 Nissan Xterra to start my journey can't wait
I hear ya and totally understand!!🇨🇦✌️🐾
I just retired and exploring the forests across the states. My options were towing, pickup camper, van, RV, or carry a tent with an all wheel drive. I choose the last option, and after a year on the road, I still believe it was the best option.
My car gets nearly 30mpg, has all-wheel drive, and the ground clearance of a stock jeep. People in off road vehicles will ask me how I got up certain roads on my car. They will look shocked. It's just physics. I have all four wheels working, and have the ground clearance. If I need to, I have room to sleep in the back of my car (height 5'11" or less). The downside is that I currently only have the stock equipment, and I had one incident where a rock destroyed a tire (sidewall). I need to add more protection, such as an engine guard, more aggressive off road tires, and a two inch lift. But so far, things have worked out except for that one tire incident. A tire salesman told me that rocks take down the best off-road tires as well. I'm going to wait another year before getting the extras.
I carry a 10ft by 15ft tent. It has 8 large windows, and a 7ft ceiling. I use a large air mattress, and a folding chair and table. It only takes 20 minutes to put up the tent. I stay dry. I will admit, I had three tents destroyed by strong winds until I learned how to secure a tent properly. I haven't lost a tent since I learned my lesson. But if the worse happens, a tent cost less than $150 to replace.
Except for a cabin on a pickup, my second option, I can go to more places than all the other options. This is a big deal because all my camping is free. Without the ability to travel these rough roads, I would have had to go to paid camp grounds quite a bit.
In 3-4 months, I'm getting solar and a frig because buying ice is a little pricey, and when my auto warranty is closer to expiring, I'm getting the off road extras. I haven't needed heat or air because at nearly 30mpg, I can affordably travel to beat the weather. Around 95% of the days I have experienced outdoors this past year have been perfect weather (temp wise).
So to sum it up:
1. Can travel the 4-wheel roads for the best free camping.
2. Do not have to spend money or time to maintain a RV or build.
3. I can go three times as far on a tank of gas, and I only have to buy insurance for my car.
4. I can keep stuff cold, and I cook food on my small stove, and have room inside the car for all my clothes, blankets, food, water, etc.
5. I have lots of room in the tent with a full size or queen bed, table and chair, and plenty of windows to admire the view.
6. Often, I can put my tent up where vehicles can't park, like on the banks of a stream, river, and lake, or at the perfect point on a mountain to take in the view.
7. I have enough power for all my electronics for two weeks. I put the solar power station in my backpack, and walk into a fast food place and have lunch, then walk out with it fully charged. With that large backpack, people assume I'm homeless, and that I just walked off the street, but since I'm buying food, no one bothers me.
I have no problems with bugs except when I take down the tent. Since I have a big heart, I have to get them off the outside of my tent, so that they aren't killed. That was mostly a headache in the Appalachians, with a specific harmless spider breed. Once it took thirty minutes to catch and release all of them. Since the tent is big with lots of windows, when not hiking, I can sit in the tent, and enjoy the views, and not be bitten by anything.
Sometimes mice will cut into the tent, but except for a repair from time to time, It's no big deal. I only encounter them about 20% of the time. They are smart, and sometimes the minute I hit the bed, I can hear their voices. Apparently, they are letting the orhers know the coast is clear to search my tent for food. I've had to rescue a few of them because they get trapped in ridiculous places. They will play cute when I rescue them, especially the young ones. But RVs and Van's can get mice also. But in their case, they hitch a ride, and will sometimes destroy wires.
I'm not protected from wildlife like bears and mountain lions like with the other options. But while I have encountered a couple of bears, they haven't bothered me so far, and I'm not worried about it. I keep a sharp knife nearby, so that if a bear acts like it wants to enter my tent, I can quickly cut myself out of the opposite side of the tent, so that I can run to my car, which is usually less than 20ft away.
The other downside which is no big deal, is that everything that has value like the ice chest, electronics, power station, blankets, etc, I have to load into the car everytime I go hiking, or go for supplies so they aren't stolen. If they steal things like my $9 chair or $15 air mattress, I don't care. I don't believe anyone would steal my tent because of the risk spending the time it takes to take it down, and it's less than $150 to replace, so I leave it. So far, I've had no problem with theives, but better to be safe than sorry.
My point is if you are planning to hit the road, keep an open mind to tent camping. It has worked for me.
I tried to read your entire article because it was so interesting but did I actually miss the name of your four-wheel-drive vehicle?
Indeed. Minimalis is great. I just put side awning and storage box on my SUV and all set! Happily travels to great places. Kudossss to u both!

Worried about finance and mechanically breaks down.
Proceeded to a Land Rover 😂
We don’t live in our Land Rover. We were constantly concerned about our very expensive home breaking down and leaving us homeless. With the landy we feel like we can beat it up and take it off road and drive it hard and it’ll be completely fine since it’s only a few grand. Not to mention we’ve actually had one problem since we got it 6+ months ago, we’ve driven it all around New Zealand, and we only had to replace the radiator which we did ourselves in a couple hours.
Love both vehicles
Ambulances are awsome.😊
Buy a high clearance trailer to tow around and double your storage.

You bought a Land Rover? You were worried about your van breaking down so you bought a Land Rover? Those things spend most of their life in the shop. If you wanted a off-road car with space you should’ve gone with a Tacoma
I think you may have missed the point. We’re not afraid of doing repairs. We just didn’t like LIVING IN such a big expensive vehicle that would leave us homeless if it had to go to the mechanic.
Land rovers are scrap
I'm home based, but in my holidays i take off in my car, which is a Citroen c3 picasso - an ordinary small car. I car camp in it with my dog and its anazing.

Old Volkswagen vans have to top extend so you can walk standing up in them, they are the best for van living!
I always wondered how they make money to make repairs and to eat doing that for 3 years
Us we though about to buy a van but every time we think about we come back to the overland car camping😂
Kudos! Safe travels and happy camping 🏕.
I bought an Xtra cab 4wd truck and I built a bed in the back with my Dad helping me. Resourced some pallets. Since I'm disabled I camp in my truck not a tent.
Take care. 👍🙂🏔🏞🌄🏕
This was great.
I find it odd that a 30000 vehicle is prohibitively ‘expensive’ and scary that you wouldn’t leave it alone.. It’s your ‘home’ but so is the old rickety landrover and that is SURELY going to break down. This makes no sense. If the 30000 conversion breaks down you will get a hotel until it is fixed the same is the LR?? This logic is so strange it doesn’t make sense. It’s only $30K (hopefully with insurance too) not $800k 😂
30k is a lot of money for us… I’ve never had anything worth that much in my whole life.
I get it.. I mean $30k it’s not nothing. And I used to overthink meticulously maintaining everything (our expensive trailer) to the point that using it in adverse conditions stressed me out. I can relate to that point. Recently a death in the family (father in law) put what matters in perspective and made me see ‘objects’ come and go. It’s the memories you make with them that matter when you reflect on your life. It helped me stop worrying about the money and the condition of things.. and just enjoy the things I have to the fullest.. until I can’t anymore. And if they get broken or stolen or whatever.. that’s what insurance is for.
Totally. But we were only making about 30k a year living in this van. And after 3 years of van life, we never once got a hotel - we never had the choice to afford it.
Researching DIY truck camper projects for ground clearnace as well as ease of maintenance. I figure it has to be easier and cheaper to fix a common truck, regardles of where I am, vs a specialized vehicle or even a diesel.
Where do you get your money from ?
So where do u put your stuff
I could never live in a vehicle without a bathroom. I get up way too often at night to pee. 🙄
Is why you should have secondary van in a storage locker.

Try bikepaking, perfect pace to travel and take everything in, gotta rough it a bit tho
Sounds fun
How do u budget gas prices?
Problem with that truck it's a commercial vehicle not a RV. It has to have commercial insurance, pretty costly, unless your state you let you change the classification to a rv.
If you can’t make repairs on a service van, that LR is going to break you. Helps it’s a little older, but even those have broken seasoned mechanics not even living in them.

What do you and your husband do for a living to sustain the Van-life nomadic style of living?

Okay but driving a retired ambulance those things are built super heavy and even though they're diesel they get horrendous gas mileage, this is at least what a dude I knew said who was making one into a camper.

I have a dog and a cat and if it wasn't for them, I would honestly have been on the road when I turned 18. I'm 20 now. I don't want a fancy setup, but now I need one, that way I know my babies are comfortable. I love them so much but I didn't think about traveling when I first got them because I was so young. Now though, a part of me wishes I wouldn't have gotten them. Don't get me wrong, I love and I'm never getting rid of them. However, I feel sometimes that they deserve better people taking care of them, simply because of my lifestyle. I love being spontaneous and traveling and I know my dog will love it, but a cat in a van?? I don't know how well that's going to go. My cat is very spunky and loves being crazy literally 24/7. Also he has always been an indoor cat and he has gotten out a few times and got scared half to death and kept running from me and ended up scratching my whole arm to pieces. So, him being in a van and having the doors open and such... I'm so worried. Ofc I could make a built-in kennel or something, but I don't want to have to keep him locked in it all the time because I need the doors open. I'm not sure how I'm going to make it work but hopefully I'll find a way. Because this is literally my dream, ever since I was around 12 I knew I wanted to love on the road and be a nomad. Not having one permanent home. Some people don't get the appeal but it sounds prefect for me.
Let me give some info because some people don't understand landrover well.
Everything old school, was well made and are very solid rovers.
Everything of the new garbage, stay away from it!
I think Van-life should be for a set period. It is fun to a point, and then it becomes a slog. I don't think it is a healthy lifestyle away from family and friends. It should be just a holiday or a long vacation.

Really depends on how much you want to baby it.
