I love this episode's focus on a) what an artist thinks about when he or she designs a painting (what she gets excited about and creates movement), and b) seeing how she'd proceed with various areas after the block-in. Very instructive. Also, specifically with flowers, how Kathy deals with the fact that they'll die before she can finish the painting.

Do you let the first layer dry before working on again? Was that painting dry?

When I teach I talk about what's in your tool kit, I would say squinting down is your biggest tool. Bravery is a close second. This is assuming you know how to draw and judge values. Be Brave!

What colors did you use for your original wash???

The Putney painters all use Rembrandt transparent oxide red and viridian as a wash, occasionally they'll use ultramarine instead of viridian. They generally go for a warm dark transparent overall tone. This all came to them thru their god Richared Schmid.
