  • As a long time watch enthusiast, it may seem like nature to wind and set your watch. But as a client of mine purchased his first automatic watch emailed me, asking how to do so.
    This is a simple tutorial on how to properly wind and set your automatic watch. There are 3 examples of different types of watches.
    Hope this is helpful to everyone!

    This was very helpful and informative, thank you! I just purchased my first self winding automatic watch, which came with a pretty lousy manual. I figured out the screw down crown myself, but I wasn't sure about the manual winding and was feeling a but uneasy about screwing the crown back in. Now I know that's how it's done and I haven't applied 'excessive' force and damaged the poor thing :')

When the watch is not being used and stops, you can not take time to be religiously resetting the date.

    I ve heard some advices that when you are winding your automatic watch its better after every 5-10 clockwise turns to make a single turn counterclockwise and then proceed cw again. Like its better for watch movement lubricant. Dont know if its true or not (I am actually browsing through such videos to find that).

    I have always wondered how accurate a watch is when the time is set while the second hand is not at the 12:00 position. Example: If I set my watch to 12:30 pm and the second hand is already reading 15 seconds (sitting at the 3:00 position) - isn't my watch 15 seconds fast right off the bat?
    If the watch has hacking, shouldn't the user wait to set the time until the second hand is at the 12:00 (or 0 second) position???

  • @user-fi8ju5qk5g

    Hi John,
    Sometimes , while setting the time on my automatic , when I turn the crown in anticlockwise direction, I hear a "click" sound 2-3 times , and the minute hand doesn't move. Once the sound stops, i can move the minute hand in clockwise direction as usual . But if I try to move it in a anticlockwise direction ( by turning the crown in the clockwise direction ), then the second hand stops, while in the former case, it continues moving . PS: i don't have a hacking mechanism.
    If on other days, if the "click" sound doesn't appear, then I can move the minute hand in either direction without the seconds hand getting stopped.
    Is there a problem or a sign of some incoming problem?

    • @WatchGauge
      @WatchGauge  Před 4 lety

      @@timefliesby-jleo474 That's absolutely correct Joseph. As the Barrel Spring (that's the spring that holds the wind) gets wound and taut, you will feel like the winding gets harder. Be sure that once it stops, do not force it, as it is fully wound then.

When I pull my watch crown to the first position in order to hand wind it, it doesn't feel like it is winding. It just turns smoothly. Do some automatics not have a hand-winding feature? If not, how can you tell the watch is fully wound? Thanks for your response, and I learned alot from watching your video. Mickey

The crown has no resistance while in the first position either way I turn it, the second position is to set the day of the month and third does time, day of the week, and the military time as well. how do I manual wind it? Any help would be appreciated :)

    • @WatchGauge
      @WatchGauge  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you so much!
      Manually winding it you would turn the crown clockwise (thumb forward while looking down at the watch) while in the first position or pushed all of the way in.
      I know a lot of Armitron watches are quartz (battery powered).
      If you have no resistance at all turning the crown clockwise, I'm thinking that your watch is quartz. If it is not and it is not winding at all, the main spring may be broken.
      Good Luck & Cheers,
      John
