I remember being a shy teenager of 13 or 14 at the arcade and could beat this game to the end... A crowd always gathered around... It always empowered me. If I happened to fail before the end, I could hear the crowd gasp, and it just made me play more until I got it down to a science. Also, please check out the movie, The Secret of NIMH... It's just as beautiful. I always loved drawing and would copy Don Bluth's style.
That's an awesome memory thanks for sharing
I also loved the The Secret of NIMH as a boy & can remember using the illustrated book of it that I got one Christmas to practice my drawing for hours on end. I can barely remember the story now so will definately be rewatching it soon now that you've reminded me of it ✌
I could get to the dragon on my first life. For the highest score, i would purposely die on the last move to slay the dragon. People watching would gasp in shock. I would have to replay the scene for each life. Slaying the dragon on my last life. Score didnt really matter in this game, but i tried for the highest anyway
@@mikep749 Dude, that’s insane. Awesome!
ya right u never beat this in the arcade!! lol most always brag about it with no proof. lol But yes I love this laser Disc based game i loved hearing play in attract mode at game palace near my area.. spooky
Such a mindblowing game, even for today's standards. The animation is incredible too!
Don Bluth was such a great animator, former Disney animator!
I remember watching someone complete this when it was a new game. It beggars my belief back in those days someone could learn it. You would seem to have to be rich or have a job to have enough 50p's to feed into it.
It was me and one other boy watching. None of us said anything to each other. Littlehampton UK.
I've been playing this game again after 40 years and I find this amazing video very helpful. I know I was able to beat it as a kid but it's been so long! seeing his hands really helps!!!! thanks guys. amazing!!
I love anything Dragons Lair. Remember the cartoon? I was about to visit Free Play just to play the Dragons Lair machine and Covid19 ruined everything.
I’ve been playing video games since I was 4 years old or so. The arcade in the 80’s was like my second home as a kid. I’d play video games anywhere I was taken. I played them at arcades, bowling alleys, grocery and convenience stores, restaurants, and anywhere else that had at least one game or more. That was the most unique, one of a kind, quickest life losing, most unplayable video game that I’ve ever came across in my entire life! There were no instructions or on screen prompts to explain exactly what you are supposed to do. I did get a kick out of watching the demo screen from time to time. I’ll have to try it one day at a retro arcade. I just need to watch some more videos on it first before I even make an attempt as an adult.
So, first of all..nice playing. And thanks for all the specifics on the design gameplay and scoring of the original arcade cabinet. When I was a kid growing up in the mid eighties, this game changed the entire Arcade landscape. The crowds it drew to spectate, I dont think I have ever seen before or since, at least in person. They actually had units with a second monitor up on top so people would not crowd the machine while people were playing it. There were local contests at some locations for the first kids to beat the game, like our skating rink snack bar gave four hot dogs, sodas and chips to the victor and 3 pals.. it had what looked to be official promotional materials up during the time too. Does anyone remember anything similar surrounding this games release? It instantly shot the winners to the front of the Cool Kid line at least in my city. It was so fun to be there during those days. I dont know if this is lost to history or if I am remembering correctly, but there were two kids in our area that could beat the game on one life, I think one went on to compete with nintendos team looking for a world title, before there really was such a distinction, but I heard there was a registry of players that could do this, kept somewhere..and to be on it was akin to rock star status to the rest of us..do anyone know if there is any truth to this
Dragon’s Lair is such a great game and it’s always one that I have wanted to get really good at thank you for the great vid!
cool af. i remember that game when it came out. i never really got it. awesome to see it completed
Just saw this game at Tornado Terrys. So much fun and interesting. The way you have to play this game is so cool!
I watched people play this for hour's as as kid, Thank you for this as I have not seen this game In years ..:) First time I've laughed in weeks ..
Great job, I’ve been a fan of dragons lair since I was 8 or 9. I first saw it in 83 or 84, was never good at it until I got part 2 for the amiga and part 1 for the sega cd. They were short versions of the real games. Since then I bought it so many times, pc cd rom, dvd, it worked on a dvd with your remote. PS3, ps4, Nintendo switch. The newer versions are really good. PS3, ps4, switch. It comes with dragons lair 1,2 and space ace. At 20 or less , you can’t go wrong.
Nice work Chris!
I really love dragons a lot. 🐉🐲
you can see the gameplay and the hands. great video!
Enjoyed the playthrough! Thanks. :)
I played this game in 80's in my city Malaga (south of Spain)
Hi, I'm right now in Malaga, really beautifull city
I’ve actually somehow never seen this game in action and I’m surprised and deeply impressed that it functions the way it does, and mostly very seamlessly! Also looks very hard to be good at lmao
Yes, on the high difficulty setting, there are several random screens that pop up that are much harder to complete and the timing is crucial. There's a third tinted horse & knight scene that pops up at random that I can never beat. The 5 scenes that pop up at random and out of sequence are: 1) Fire ropes 2) Horse and Knight 3) Purple checkboard floor 4) Spinning pendulums and 5) Cavern floor opening up. Also in the long river scene, there are only three whirlpools instead of four. And actually if you lose a life trying to beat one of these random scenes, it returns as a NORMAL timing scene at the end before the final dragon scene.
I always get aggravated when I see a bad review given by some 20 year old who's obviously never even seen the arcade game in person, let alone played it and they say
"Boring game. You barely even actually play it.! .
This game was a blast and always drew a crowd
You can pre order it now arcade 1up. I did play it as a kid and I'm not 20 and didn't like it which is my opinion. Graphics and sound great. To be fair a 20 year old probably has played it. Also to be fair most younger people into games probably played the game epecially with stuff like raspberry pii and all these arcade plug ins that have full arcade setup.
I'm 46, grew up in the 80s (obviously) I love arcade games. But this? To me it is a sequence of pre fabricated clips with hardly any gameplay at all.
@@andreasu.3546 I guess but did you feel that same way when you first saw it in 1983 I can understand if it came out now when people aren't blown away by this but when you first walk down that aisle in 1983 and saw dragons lair in between Space Invaders and Pac-Man there was nothing like it I don't know I'm not a big fan of QuickTime event games but I love this artwork the little faces he makes just every little thing about the animation the game plays almost secondary to me
dragon lair a great game, and thank you very much for the wonderful game!..it was mach lll for me i could land the bomber.
Dragon’s Lair is an untamed beast. Just when you think you’ve mastered it, it throws a screwball your way.
I think it depends on the difficulty level the machine is set at, once you master all the difficulty levels it cant beat you
I felt like a man the first time I managed to slay the dragon back in the day. It was the gateway to manhood for any teenage boy.
ryan reynolds playing him in the netflix series is gonna be bad ass !!!
update I just went and played and did wayyyyyy better than I've been doing. thanks kindly again!!
I can remember after a few goes of Dragons Lair I soon realised it was a game I really loved to see in the arcades but not play.
I've seen it beaten in 1983. These guys must be in their late 30's at most
I forgot how much I hated this game for killing me .First saw this game at Chuck E Cheese in 83, first 50 cent game.
So... this is not so much a "How to Win" but, how to watch someone win @ Dragon's Lair.
How to win? Oh, you can't. Don't bother XD
Thank you for this video. When I was 6 (1992) I would play this and lose in the first scene. I could NEVER figure out what I was supposed to do lol. I hated this game and would always try and lose. Funny how memory works because I thought it started out in the kitchen or something not that room that closes.
I bought the 1up Arcade version as an old man just to learn how to beat it to validate all the quarters I lost from my 13 year old yard cutting jobs in the early eighties! I could have invested in Microsoft...
Is the drawbridge scene one of the random scenes that could appear in the second half of the game?
No. That's a scene that is part of an enhanced version that appeared in PC versions only. The difficulty setting this guy has is on the highest, thus several harder random scenes appear that are absent in the low and mid settings, such as a third fire rope and a second difficult moving purple floor. There are several others that may pop up, such as a third and very difficult horse & knight scene, avoiding fire and pillars.
I don’t understand how you did this.. Looks impossible to me..
Great video. Especially since you showed the inputs.
Just a few things I wish you would have mentioned that a pro knows someone who never played would notice.
Like what you explained at the 15 min mark. The first example of that was at 4:15. You don't know when that scene is comming but when I'd does you have a fraction of a second to push up or you're dead.
And what you might not know since he didn't lose a life is that when you do die, you DO NOT return to the same scene. You continue on and will have that scene pop up again at some point.
There are maybe 5 scenes off the top of my head that require an immediate input or you're dead.
The crumbling Bridge. (Up)
The black knight on the horse. (Up)
The ground falls apart. (Right) that's the hardest one IMO.
The metal slamming doors. (Up)
I think that there is one more.
Plus, this game had
EASY, MED, HARD
Modes. Hard making the already split second timing even harder and talking away any flashing hints.
Great game. I'd love to play it again.
I have been slowly collecting arcade games for year finally got a Dragons Lair. Even on easy it ramps to hard I want to say after 6-9 correct scenes completed. I got the Dragon lair Extended Disc it has the scenes and escape routes not in original game. Like the fire room has an escape by the step stool and other scenes as well. Love the game still on disc as well. Just got to be gentle with player.
FINALLY I HAVE IT FOR MY PS2! LOVE IT! ... BUT IT LAGGS MORE IN BETWEEN SCENES.
This game was a true love hate relationship.. I thought it was the coolest but only lasted a few minutes at best.. It was the most frustrating game to date. Second one that was frustrating was a game they came out with near the same time that was a hologram game, also very damn hard!!!
I haven't seen a true Dragons Lair Arcade Machine in almost 25 years.
I went insane trying to figure out how to get Daphne to work on my laptop because I wanted to play the arcade version so badly. Maybe it's me, but no other version feels or plays like the original arcade version to me. I'd love a chance to play this. Time to plan a cross country trip.
Then again the amount of quarters I put into this Machine over the years would buy me one.
I always wondered what happened after the first 45 seconds
So how many quarters did it take to memorize the moves to this game? I remember it coming out and was excited about playing it but was quickly turned off. Though, the animation/tech at the time was amazing but the game play was not intuitive. Some hints with the lighting indicators but most of the time I did not know when to use the sword button or even when to move. It just turned me off very quickly, not to mention I only had a few quarters and my games had to last. With all that said, I wished I knew how to play this game, one of the few I did not master at all back in those days. So very cool to see and now I got myself a mini version of this game, no more quarters but still a bitch to play and I still suck at it...that's why I'm here. LOL
IT truely is the greatest looking game ever made
I don't care that it's some other Dirk Diggler doing it. Still feels like a win. It's dragon beating time 35 years later!
What is the game that showed real people in between levels in aglassball? I thought it was this game at dinosaur r us old pizza place.
Just to understand, only five movements? Up, Down, Left, Right and Sword? I have this game on a emulator and have no idea how to play hahahaha
I will show that for Dustin
I Never Understood How The Sword Worked only Sometimes and Other Times Not? Like almost why have a button for the sword?
One of the whirlpools got cut off.
Yes, on the difficult setting, only 3 whirlpools appear instead of 4, but you need quicker reaction to the left as soon as you see the first whirlpool.
last one: "crippling" indeed!!!!
I'm 28 ( I'm very well cultured) but can someone explain the technical side. Like how do you know when to interact, is the game like a pre recorded animated movie?
Love the way this guy broke the game
12:13 guess he forgot something on the other side
First for once.great content.tyvm.🔥
LOL Not to laugh but those ropes are deceivingly hard. I played this for many, many, months till i could run the game when I was a 12 year old. I have access to a cabinet at Funspot in NH but it doesn't have the original laser disc (as you mentioned, you have the only one?) and it plays just a bit differently so my old muscle memory doesn't serve me well. You have to be precise on some moves (like the ropes).
Thanks for this upload. It brings me back. I remember getting so excited as a progressed through and mastered all the scenes. I still get a burst of excitement when you made it to the dragon.
After Dragon's Lair came Space Ace, which was much harder. I did the same with that game and played and played. I made it to the final battle scene with Bork a few times but never beat it. Then life moved on... There is a Space Ace cab at Funspot as well.
I just posted a comment asking if there were 2 different versions of the original game, because it doesn’t look a lot like the original. I beat the Dragon the first time I got into the lair in ‘82, then played it in the ‘90’s and there was a black and white checkered floor in a very small alcove and you had to move towards the cues, until the last cue, directly in front of you, needed a really quick double tap, but not in front, I played it for weeks in the 90’s and it was the only board I couldn’t pass. I’ve been looking for the answer for years. And again, is there a second version of the original laserdisc game?
I don’t get how you know when to click or move the joystick lol
You move the joystick or use the sword to guide Dirk and complete a scene or portions of it.
So far, I guess this isn’t what I’m looking for - an explanation of how to even play.
Not true. Hershey Park has one.
Bruh, its easy
Step 1: Buy the ds version
Step 2: Poggers
Save Daphne!
Save Ferris!
Who Cares about The Score,it's Important to Finish The Game
Most arcade games don't have an actual ending. Most just would keep going until the player dies/runs out of quarters or encounters a kill screen. So most of them were about getting the highest score.
Lots of trial and error. This game is like trying to read someone's mind over and over until you get something right.
Try playing it without hearing the beeps of the buttons. I guarantee you won't like it.
There Are Many Omitted Moves That Were In Dragon's Lair When It Was Originally Released In 1983. I Was 10yrs. Old Playing It Back Then, And Many Of The Scenes Had Several Moves That Were Not Shown Here In This Video Post. Like The Boat Scene; In Ye Rapids, It Was Right, Up, Left, Up, etc., On The Mounted Black Knight, At The End, You're Supposed To Go Right Again To Have Dirk Jump Into The Hole, The Apparition In The Cauldron Scene, After Killing The Ghost In The Cauldron, It's Right, Then Right Again, In The Dragon's Lair, You're Supposed To Move Left, To Have Dirk Jump To The Treasure Chest, The Part When Dirk Catches The Goblets/Treasure It's Down, When Singe Tries To Grab Dirk On The Pillar, It's Down, Down, Left. Even In Space Ace There Are Moves From 1985, That Weren't There Anymore Today, Like The Drills Scene, In The Beginning On The First Drill, It's Right, Before Going Past The Drill w/Left. It'd Be Nice If You Had An Atari FireFox (Clint Eastwood) Arcade. I Noticed Hearing The Theme Of Gauntlet II In The Background, Cool!
There was different versions of rom sets for Dragon's lair. I remember playing a Bridge in beginning but that was only for the first few cabs made. They removed it in other cabinets because people couldn't figure it out. Some rom versions had slightly different moves or difficulty. I have the Enhanced and original laserdisc in my game. The enhanced has the extra scenes and escapes for Dirk. Game is fun as hell. My nephews are losing their collective shit trying to beat it. They are playing it on my original arcade.
Wrong title. How is this a “How To” if the player is telling us “How To”?
“Watch Chris Kill The Dragon in the Dragon’s Lair”, should be the title!
Try hard mode...that's EZ mode...simple as
Such a badly designed game lol
1980 Skyrim gameplay.
