  • Welcome to a different kind of video for the channel! In today's upload, we'll head for the sky and take an arial tour of Progress Rail's Mayfield, Kentucky shops. As you'll soon find out, this facility was full of rare locomotives, some I haven't seen in years, and some I'd never seen until now! Enjoy!

Thank you for this. I count 10 SD70T-4s in yellow plus three more in different paint. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of a new locomotive.

I’m curious about the common issue with the locomotives? They seem to be a very solid design and extremely rugged. I’m not much of a diesel expert.

@@lawnmowermanTX I’m retired and never worked on one (and cannot recall ever seeing one in person). That said, let’s compare the progression paths. GE followed up Dash-8 line with the common framework for both the Dash-9 and AC4400. That basic framework has carried forward, with little alteration, to the ES series and later the ET series. EMD didn’t do that. The SD70 and SD70MAC had the same engine and that’s about it. When GE introduced the EVO-12 we knew the future for freight was a six-axle, AC transmission locomotive with a 12-cylinder prime mover in the 4000-ish hp range. EMD did test one with the SD89MAC test bed. But then they reverted back to the tried and true (and doomed) 710. Now they try to sell an SD70 that doesn’t have a 70-series engine under the hood. Locomotive market is down due to railroad management decisions. There is no critical mass of new SD70T-4s out there to refine the product. They are dealing with a confluence of bad circumstances.

EMD is easier to rebuild because they make replacement parts while GEs rush new ones out the door because their older ones don’t last as long after 30 years and they cause fires and that’s not uncommon with theirs

Sounds like those engines really need a remanufacturing facility and use reliable engine designs, diesel fuel delivery, crankshaft, pistons, rings, engine block enhancements as well as oil lubrication delivery.. I’m not 100% sure what the exact common detailed complaints were, but sounds like if the engines broke during warranty then it be recalled for engine design defect flaws. Caterpillar and Cummins used to make good reliable engines.
Sounds like too many penny pinching 🤏 nitpickers screwed up a cool looking locomotive for cutting corners on the bottom line. 😿😿😿😭😭😭🤕🤕
