  • With guitar prices going up and up, it's refreshing that you can still get amazing guitars for well under $200. This super affordable, budget friendly strat style guitar from Thomann / Harley Benton features a caramelized, roasted maple neck, and a dual rail humbucker pickup in the bridge position!
My friend and fellow shred guitarist Deakon Lekross placed an order together to save on the shipping costs. I recommend you do the same! It was fun!

I have never had any luck with Harley Benton pickups. Always microphonic. Ok at low volumes, try playing one onstage..squeal fest. They make decent mod projects thought just be ready to replace the electronics. They must pay these CZcams guys well, they all seem to push their guitars like they are just as good as guitars 3 times the price. They are basically good necks and bodies. Dump a bunch of money into them and you will have a great guitar, with no resale value.

The thing is, Harley Benton side-steps the pickup debate, by being so affordable, you can just get both 🤷‍♂ I tend to prefer a humbucker, but occasionally it's nice to have another tonal option, and thanks to brands like HB, you can just get another 'once in a while' guitar without dropping a ton of money, and still get something that's actually playable and usable.

OK Max, I'll bite. My daughter Vhey has been hounding me about getting an electric guitar. I saw you and Deakon opening your Harley Bentons and I was intrigued. So, I ordered one on the 21st the order was written on the 22nd. and delivery is scheduled for the 26th. (25th is a Sunday) What? Five days days from Germany? (with a Sunday) Ordered 4:00pm on 9/21-Processed at 8:00am on 9/22- UPS picked it up at 4:00pm 9/22 - Arrived at Airport 12:00am 9/23 Cleared German outgoing Customs at 1:30am 9/23 - Arrived Louisville KY 3:45 pm 9./23(Germany is 9 hours ahead of us)9/23
    Delivered on time Monday 9/26.
I was a bit shaken when UPS delivered the box. It had some damage and a bit of crushing. There was a tear in the corner of the outer box. The insides of the box were OK. The individual box was pristine and the guitar didn't have a scratch on it. Thomann packs them very well for UPS. I'm taking it to a luthier to get a full set up and new strings.
    --- I'll let you know how it works out for us. $111 + $29 for the 'Super Deluxe' Gig bag, + $80 Shipping = $220. - - -
Question: Is the Nut Bone? I think it might be graphite.
The $29. gig bag is pretty good for $29. It has some 3/4" padding and the fabric is tough kinda like canvas. It should offer some protection, but I wouldn't put it in airplane luggage
UPDATE: Christmas 2023. I did a little work on the Harley Benton. I replaced the nut with bone. I worked on the deck, polished the frets, rounded them off and installed staggerd locking tuners. My daughter isn't into playing metal or blues, so I made it "Hard tale" I blocked the tremolo. I had a small piece of hardwood and fitted it in. There is a small screw hole on the top so it will be easy to remove later.
It is strung with '9's and using a tremolo puts it out of tune real quick. I went back to the luthier for a check-up and intonation. I went to"Etsy" and had a waterslide decal with her name on it. Replacing the 'H.B." signage. Awesome instrument!

Today's intro piece shows just how much you've progressed, and I've got to say that I'm impressed.
Your speed is just as it was, that would be hard to improve, but your phrasing has come along leaps and bounds, I really appreciated how you tied runs together and followed the backing track with what you played over it.
One thing I've always liked about your content is how you'll shred on such cheap instruments and make them sound appealing to old and young players, when other channels seem to plod along like it's impossible to shred, but put an expensive axe in their hands...

Humbucker in bridge is a MUST. Worked for EVH. Squiers have really gone down in quality. LOVE seeing options like HB. I was at a GC and a teen (newb guitarist) brought in an orange Squier strat he said had buzzing/intonation issues. tech popped the neck off and there were 6 drill holes all wonky, saw dust and none filed down. The tech dowled the spare holes , filed down the existing holes and put it back together free of charge. Well, factory second necks and plastered bodies with pot metal hardware are the hallmark of anything Fender not made in Mexico or USA. So, if you're on a budget, HB etc are really better options

I've had all the combinations: HSS, HSH, and 3 singles. The last Fender I owned I upgraded to a Seymour Duncan hot rails in the bridge and two Seymour singles. Honestly, I'm not a fan of humbuckers in a strat with single coils. When you split the humbucker and combine with a single (position 2 or 4) you just don't get the right tone. All that being said, I like both humbuckers and single coil guitars depending on what I'm playing. Lately, for cleaner sounds (totally clean or just a little gain) I'm digging single coil strats. I get a brighter tone that sounds really good. However, once I go to rock or metal, humbuckers all the way. I've got SG's and a Les Paul for that. Totally unrelated, when I want super cool and different, I break out my Brian May guitar. Talk about unique tones!

Back in 1990 I was in a Heavy Metal band in South Florida, and I had walked into our local store, and they just got their newest USA Strat in called the "Ultra". I wouldn't use a Start back then because of the thin sound Strat's with single coils were known for, and I was never a big effects guy. My rig was a 100-watt Marshal and a stack of Celestin's. The salesperson said no one so far liked because it had the Humbucker, and he said a grand and its yours. So, to answer the question as a mostly metal rhythm guitarist keeping the background full and alive, it's always been the humbucker in the bridge for me and that type of music. Still have it to this day. By the way, excellent job once again Max. You mentioned Germany, are you there and if so where at?

Don't get me wrong ESP's LTD series is worth every penny, but this definitely has some things I miss from my Strat, and it's cheaper oO. Everyone needs a cheap guitar, I don't care how good you are, they're just more fun when you go hand out, or have around for people to pick up and play, without having to worry about keys, belt buckles, humidity when traveling, etc.

I've been playing guitar for a little over 22 yrs now( also repair & teach). Always have had a love for budget guitars, anywhere from $250-$400(New or Used) seemed to the sweet spot for me back in band playing days. Main guitar setups would normally be dual hums, 1 hum & a single-soil in the neck, or mod them to only run the bridge. Just depended on the tuning/song, but my amp(s) were always higher-end.....I'm actually going to be ordering my first Harley Benton here in a couple of weeks, not just to add to ever growing collection of guitars, but cause i want to try them out and a different company's take on the fanned-fret, multi-scale 8-string. That, and all I hear is great things about them....Great work on the vid & channel buddy!

I bought the same guitar after some research....and; 100% satisfaction ! That bridge pickup is a killer, the neck is better than my expensive Gretsch, the guitar sounds great out of the box without any set up (even the intonation was spot-on). I had some guitars back in the 1980s and one of those guitars (which was completely unplayable crap) cost me the exact amount of money as this HB....now, consider inflation under 42 years !? That is crazy. Considering the relation between sound-quality and price, it is impossible to produce anything better than this. I've got one of these, great neck, but definitely needed some work. Getting the neck relief dialed in took time (acclimation), and I leveled/crowned and polished the frets and installed a bone nut.
But for the price? Hard to beat, especially when you order more than one guitar.
For basswood, it doesn't feel too light. And I added a brass full sized (yes these have full depth) trem block and decked it.

Single coil in the bridge sounds too thin to me. I definitely need a humbucker!
But this is a key question for anyone wanting to preserve the classic sound. Case in point, I picked up a HB Tele and converted it into an Esquire as a hobby project, with the "cocked wah" mod. One of the mods was to change the bridge pickup to a humbucker, but I didn't want to compromise too much on the Tele sound. I got an SD Hot Stack which actually isn't hot, but it cuts the hum and just takes the ear bleeding shrillness off the usual bridge. So it still sounds like a Tele without the hum. And the nice thing is it's a fun guitar to play. I've got a couple of HBs now and they all feel fun to play. Especially for beginners, this is important to inspire you to pick it up!

Oh, and that is a sharp guitar, unbelievable price, the pickups and nice neck alone are worth more. I might have to shed a Korean Squier Strat ( three of those already) and get one. The guitar room is getting kind of full..! Thank you for all your work here!

I bought one. And, after setting it up properly I'm rather enjoying it. The pups sound good. And you cannot beat such a great price for this level build. I am however going to change the trem system and the tuners. HB tuners are ok. I've less beef with them than I do with some other name brands (including Gibson.) But I would like something with a little more finesse. And, I'm not a great fan of the trem on this, so, I've just ordered a Wilkinson VintageT-WVC-N through Reverb. That said, this is indeed a fun guitar.

Humbucker on the bridge is better in my opinion unless you manage to find a higher output single coil. The neck is a different story because often it will be used for clean tones and that's where a single coil really shines. Basically more versatile in my opinion.

I've got four Harley Benton guitars and a bass. In Norway I have to pay 25% import tax in addition to the shipping cost but it just does not make sense to buy a "nice brand" guitar for more money with lower level of specs and quality. I've got LTD, Ibanez, Jackson and Schecter guitars but the Harleys are getting played the most. Might just try this hot rod next.

Ive owned a lh tele style deluxe from HB for about a month now. After years of playing an Ibanez Gio I got back in 2007 and it falls in line with that quality. The neck actually feels better from what I remember. My friend had a jackson Pro with seymour Duncans and I can say the roswell humbuckers are very impressive and comparable to those pickups, and that Jackson was paired with a Tubed 100 watt head Randall halfstack. I am wowed by Harley Benton and highly suggest you should get one just to own a cheap throw around.

I own too many guitars, at least my wife thinks so, and have 4 strats in my collection. My favorite is a Fender American HHS. I also like the humbuker in the bridge position. As far as Thomann and Harley Benton goes I have had both good and bad experiences with their guitars. I do have too add that I have been satisfied with their customer service.

Thank you for another great demo and review. While I like the HSS Strat a lot, when you split the Humbucker to the single coil, it just doesn't sound the same to me as an SSS Strat (Which is why I have identical Fender American Professional II Strats, one SSS and one HSS. For me, purchasing identical Fender American Professional II SSS and HSS is one of the most rewarding choices I've made.). When I want the single coil bridge sound on my Strats, I just really prefer a single coil to a split Humbucker. I feel in all fairness I should point out that I really like the HSS because there is something special about the Humbucker Bridge pickup sound on a Strat. Please keep the great demos, reviews, and videos, Max!!

Since I heard about this brand I am more and more interested in it and I can't wait to receive the two guitars I ordered in the next few days
A ST-20HH Active SBK and a ST-62 SB Vintage Series
Thank you for talking about this brand which has one of the best quality price ratio that exists
There's just one thing I don't understand, it's that when you look at the tests of Harley Benton's modeling amps, it doesn't sound great and knowing the brand, I wonder why
Instead I took a Fender mustang LT 25 which seemed to be of much better quality

First of all, your geman pronounciation is pretty good.
Second, Twin-Blade in the bridge with 2 singles is the way to go. Richie Kotzen has the same setp-up in his strats.
Last but not least, I guess tuning stabillity of that 6-point trem is pretty bad and you should replace it & the nut right away.
In any case, this is a great modding plattform and even with the extra shipping, it's a total bargain.

    • @chariotdrvr14
      @chariotdrvr14 Před 2 lety

The nut is made of some good material. I'm not going to change that (even thought that's usually the first thing that I do change.) But definitely would change the bridge and trem system. The trem leaves something to be desired. But you really can't knock it for the price.

Nice video of your solo. Started my Father's day with a scream. Say, how about a video on getting those fret ends smooth (for a poor boy). Have a Michel Kelly and just ordered a HB. The MK is great but the fret ends are bad. I worry what the HB will be like. This is a big deal for me because I'm up there in age and my skin is not as rugged as it used to be back in my days of armor. If you can't get it on a video, perhaps you can link one. I did have to roll the edges myself on an 800 dollar player series, but for all the other perks in terms of wood, build quality, and hardware, especially a dedicated tone knob for the bridge pickup, beefed up trem, satin neck, and 9.5 radius instead of 7.5 it was worth it to me, but like I said, absolutely love that Fender sound, but with the HSS, gotta have the ass in the bridge.
