What is pico 8 actually? Is it emulating a console from the past?
pico 8 is paid. therefore it deserves to be mocked. tic 80 better because it's free and open source.
What do you mean it deserves to be mocked? Pico games are playable and fun. Tic is fun to but for some reason or another the games are lacking a bit, at least what I’ve seen so far, probably hvent looked enough. But regardless, im happy for both platforms to coexist. And btw pico is paid but something like $15 for kit. Thats almost symbolic. Whoever works on it diserves some compensation, no?

WOW, that was insanely cool and inspiring to be able to make all of those in pico-8. And it's amazing to see people's creativity and what people come up with.
Note that most of these games use obscene amounts of hackery to be even possible on the PICO-8. It's pretty cool, but the tool does not make it any easier.
I love Pico-8, such a chilled out development environment. What I like most is how accesible it is... it's great for people to learn with, and it's a great platform for advanced coders to show off on. If I could add just 1 feature though... easy map loading and saving... let us make big games easily.

I always loved Zeewolf on the Amiga and now I love Zedwolf on the Pico. Never knew the devs of the original were from my home town of Bath UK

Pico 8, is the second steps from scratch to code for beginner game devs (I just bought it as my second step)
Pico-8 is amazing, I love it, but it feels like it's a place where experts go to have fun with knowledge they already have - not particularly great for learning any of the underlying concepts that goes into the greatest examples here

Polar Panic is fun and was the first reason I'm contemplating actually paying to put this Pico-8 on my portable emulation console. Also just tried a game called "Sub-uber-marine" that I found very fun.
I'm currently making a downhill skiing arcade game in P8. But damn these are way better.
Love the Wolfenstein 3D and Alone in the Dark versions :3

I want someone to make a "port" of Dodonpachi Daioujou (and other cave games) to Pico 8
The only concern is the lack of save games.
I read somewhere that a persistant storage is technically possible but (almost?) no game seem to use it so progress is gone after each new game launch.
Apart from that it's an amazing invention.
Moonrace saves the medals you've collected so far if you want to look into. It requires poking bytes to a specific address as far as I understand, so we need to do parsing manually. It seems to me it is practical to save a very simple data, like only one integer which represents current level etc.
@@huseyinyasar6485 Yeah, you can save a few integers or booleans and I know it's already possible but the more I wonder, why it's so rarely used. I will check Moonrace (thanks) but I think all games should support it where you progress through levels or something. Also the official emulator should allow save states. It really is the only downside of PICO-8, as much as I love it.
I understand, the games are small anyway and meant for a few "quick runs" but especially with harder games, where each solved level took some time, I'd love to save and continue the next day. I'm working 40 hours a week and only have time for a few minutes a day for gaming. This way I won't ever see the last levels of "harder" games. :P
@@TarikA I guess it's one of those "philosophy of pico8" moments :) the thing is, it is so neat and fun that we want to use it more, but it is always that one limitation. I'd throw away unity for good if pico8 was just a little bit more flexible.
@@huseyinyasar6485 Totally agree. I too would develop a game for the PICO-8 rather than another one in Unity. However, a native save STATE feature should be pretty easily implementable into the main emulator and would solve all save issues. On the other hand it's up to each developer to include save GAME values like the reached level and I guess Lex should do a blog post telling all people to do so, otherwise it won't happen to the majority of games.
@@TarikA I personally don't wish pico8 to be more than what it is. There are a lot of features i crave, too, but I don't know whether having those would add or take away from the experience. As you said, it is about what is meant for. It kind of comes down to being conservative or progressive, I guess :)

Just tried a game called Sub-uber-marine that I found very fun. Going to get it working on my 351P at some point. Looks to be a great many fun games to try on it and if portable I'll have an easier time doing so.
Edit: just replayed it and found it was paid... Bummer... But may pay for it anyway cus it was fun.
I guess no one will tell you here but maybe put a number system or game name in the video. As it stands i have to count how many games came before it in the video in order to find the name.
