No need to remember or save Barclays shield configuration. It'll never come in handy.
The purpose was for the Enterprise to withstand a single massive blow without being crippled. There was probably some minor damage done, but the shield modifications did the job
That’s one of the critiques of Star Trek, overall: there are so many modifications and so forth that they never seem to remember or implement for the general good.
Gotta protect the practice of just making something up every episode...
At least, metaphasic shields got to be reused in a later episode after they got discovered !!
Probably got good use against the Borg, later.
Captain: "I'm willing to entertain suggestions."
Me: "Let's try outrunning it faster than just Warp 2."
Not possible since Barclay is diverting warp power into the shields.
@@Ericwvb2TBF. I think he realised that outrunning it was impossible at that point.
@@kadindarklord With his zillion point IQ he had probably figured that out early on. He was just too busy saving the ship to have time to explain everything to the simpletons surrounding him.
I meant Picard, sorry. He probably figured out running wasn't going to work.

This is one of the few episodes in which Worf's recommendations don't get refused every single time
well, he is whiter in this episode
Well, since Wesley is no longer around for people to tell him to "SHUT UP," someone had to pick up the slack.
Piccard: NO WORF, YOU DUMBASS!!!
And the one time he was reluctant to fire a maximum yield, full spread 😂🤣
@@ConvictedFelonKwame 🤣🤣🤣
0:53 You can see Picard struggling as his normal instinct is to always disagree with whatever Worf says, but much to his very visible annoyance he has to agree. Thankfully he doesn't actually have to give Worf the satisfaction of saying he agrees, he simply acts like Worf didn't say anything and gives an order to the ensign. He makes a mental note to assign Worf to wiping down the holodeck after one of Riker's visits later.
You can see Worf's disappointment as well when the one time his "fire all weapons" advice is tried and does nothing. He's like "well, they're never going to let me do that again"
Lmao this comment is gold
😆 Nut...
@@user-do2ev2hr7h he was inwardly ecstatic at the "fire torpedoes @ maximum yield" order though
no joke riker after a holodeck visit, geesh. haha.
It's a pity they didn't have Uber-Barclay when the Borg attacked, they'd probably have dealt with the cube in about 30 seconds.

Full spread on a small target? Makes little sense.
@@LordTalax "Full spread" means firing the maximum number at a time possible. If a submarine has four tubes firing forward, a "full spread" would be four torpedoes, one from each tube. The Enterprise has a different system, wherein the rear firing point can hurt three at a time. Hence, three torpedoes launched.
@@LordTalax For "spread," think of Thanksgiving dinner with the table fully set. EVERYTHING is there: The turkey, potatoes, noodles, stuffing, green vegetable, butter, gravy, cottage cheese, bread, that casserole from the relative who can't cook but always insists on bringing something...

Watching this video makes me really miss models in shows like this. The shots of the Enterprise backing away then coming about are absolutely gorgeous.
There really is no substitute for physical models and motion control cameras.
The Orville had the right approach, use physical models and CG to touch up or do really complex action shots.
I was just thinking the same. That shot of the Enterprise coming about is just gorgeous.
I hope they took notes on how to increase the shields by 300%
They took notes and put them in the same file cabinet with the phase cloak and the de-aging transporter.
Admiral janeway explained him how to do it in the future.
Asking how it was done should have been the first words out of Geordi's mouth.
My deadcanon is that they saved the information and forwarded it to Starfleet HQ, who then put their scientists to work on it, trying to figure out how to do it again but safely and in a way that can be massproduced. Research like that doesn't happen overnight, so we never see it again because it would take many years to perfect and then implement on every starship. Perhaps say 30 years or so after this, Barcleys transfiguration is the basis of the new shield norm.
I'm sure they did but the warp power to the shields trick usefulness is situational as your sacrificing warp drive which could be problematic if you're in battle and you need to retreat
Why don't they have massively more powerful shields after this episode and applied to the fleet if it is so easy to do? The computer would log what he did so they could reverse engineer it.
It might only be a temporary solution, or it damages critical parts
There are ways they could explain it
Probably the modifications are not stable or draw to much power to be used for more than a short time.
They had to drop out of warp to use it. Probably shunted most of the ship's power into just the shields.
The ship dropped out of warp, which could mean that massive amounts of power had to be diverted, not only from the engines, but probably other systems as well. Maneuverability, phasers, not to mention all the other systems Barclay had to reroute power through, making those systems inoperable. Even then, that 300% increase to shields is probably only good to withstand one massive hit, and then you're left defenseless with no systems.
Not good for a dog fight, but more as a last ditch effort.
But you are right about how the computer should have a record of how he did it, what inputs he made on the console. This last-ditch-extreme-emergency protocol should be available for every starship.
Because it wasn't written into the script.
Oh lord, I laughed my beans off at Barclay's giddy-as-a-schoolgirl expression at 3:55. That was just TOO precious...
That IS a very good reaction.
But I kind of liked La Forge's reaction afterwards.
Kind of reminds me of some old 90s High School movie where the Popular Girl takes an unpopular girl "under her wing" and then gets annoyed/ resentful when the unpopular girl becomes MORE popular than HER! lol
It was well-acted. A typical reaction for his personality upon experiencing being genius-level useful and likely saving the ship.

TNG is the best thing to ever hit TV screens
I'm sure this modification by Barclay was kept by Geordie, and was later sent probably to SCE (Starfleet Corps of Engineering) and Montgomery Scott, now the head of SCE probably researched it along with LaForge, and came to the conclusion it was a sound idea and was implemented in one way or another throughout the fleet. Larger ships would eventually have a secondary warp drive (Reference: The Ross Class) which could use its secondary warp reactor to further reinforce the shields and power phasers to unheard of levels.
For smaller ships, additional generators like dilithium and fusion were added as a "interim" method until a small enough secondary warp reactor could be created. But it started with Barclay, and I wouldn't be surprised if Barclay was truly one of the Federation's finest minds. If not THE finest mind the Federation has produced. He compares favorably to Cochrane, Setar of Vulcan, Noonian Soong, Ira Graves, Nog of Ferenginar, Spock of Vulcan, and Reginald Barclay.
Worf was pretty damn satisfied at the photon torpedo request.
He looked worried to me, because the suggestion came from Barclay.
@@Dowlphin Worf: well, I did want to fire a full spread, but hm *pause*... ok then

Barclay has the best character arc in the TNG timeline. Fight me.
I think Worf's character development was pretty extensive. He went from being a growling security officer to Chief of Security to a father to being a pivotal factor in a Klingon civil war, and finally getting together with Deanna.
Best character arc goes to: Salamander Tom Parris! He really stuck it to the captain!
Among other things, this clip shows the massive power gap between phasers and photon torpedoes
- Love the little 180 the ship does at 1:02
- Why didn't they go any faster than warp 2? Could they try going max warp and THEN give up?
- Strange that the ship looks to be 3-4km away from the probe and that's "too close" for torpedos.
- And Barkley's shield modifications were never heard from again.
LaForge wasn't upset the Barclay overstepped, he's salty because he was one-upped. LOL
I dunno, I'd be too busy looking at consoles and taking notes on how the hell he just did that.

omg, I want to use nacelle in a sentence too! The nacelle was stuck in the backside of worf. Joy!
One of the more common things that may bother me is the speed of the ship. One episode a planet needs medicine and there’s not a moment to spare…
“Plot a course, warp factor 5.”
Next a ship or outpost needs immediate help with no other ships in their vicinity.
“Warp factor 7.”
Next Troi’s mother is on board causing trouble, they need to deliver her home.
“Warp factor Nine!”
This probe starts nearing them potentially destroying ship.
“Half impulse… full impulse! We should go.. warp factor 3!”
Data recently impressed me in command of a ship. Somewhere to be right away.
“Warp factor 9.3.”
So I get stuck wondering about fuel economy or galactic speed limits and next thing I know the episode concludes leaving me wondering what I missed lost in my thoughts.
Sir this thing is really dangerous. We need to get alway from it.
Fine, give me warp 2.
Are you sure you don't want warp 8 or 9, it is dangerous after all.
You heard the order ensign. Warp 2...
They may have went to higher warps next but Barclay beat them to it with his shield attempt.
Wow Picard actually listened to Worf for once!
So why is the Enterprise not beeping when in reverse?
😅
This ingenious technology was once used for trash trucks on earth, but has since been forgotten...
Simple. To paraphrase a line from another sci-fi show, "In space, no one can hear you beep."
She does, you simply cannot hear that in space…
Absolutely. After all, we wouldn't want the Enterprise to back into a planet. That would get their insurance canceled, and they would be grounded. End of series.
Drop a torpedo and hit max warp.
Even Barclay didn't have that idea.
Probably too simple for a super-intellect.
The one time that they actually fire a spread of torpedoes, when instructed to do so.
And it works as intended.
Whole ship: guess we can't make fun of Barclay anymore.....
*Broccoli
and no, they didn't stop
I always loved that “3 point turn” maneuver that the Enterprise does in this scene. It must have been tricky to film with motion control cameras. Apparently they can do 1/4 impulse in reverse but have to spin around and use the main impulse engine to go faster.
My take on the spin was that Piccard was setting up his next step, going to warp.
2:30 - OK, how about Warp 9?
I would have ordered that the moment the probe was matching their impulse speed.
There's really not reason not to try the best way to get away from it first. Can always come back seconds/minutes later if you feel like it.
Legend has it Gene leaked 50,000 gallons of sweat to allow an episode of TNG to have it's problem resolved by weapons.

Barclay : Well I did save Voyager.
I'm always amused by the dramatic music, desperately trying to add tension to the on-screen action. If the video is on mute, then this is a very slow-paced clip of the ship slowly moving away from the probe and not getting very far. Without the music, this scene is glacial, with only the cerebral implications to add any drama. The score, OTOH, is treating this like a pitched battle, and the contrast is almost comical.
Thanks for noting this; I hadn't quite figured it out.
I think one of the things most Trekkies appreciate, and which the modern versions lack, is that shoe-string budget feel. Trek writers always did a lot with a little and you have to appreciate how much heavy lifting that cheesy incidental music performs.
Watch any blockbuster movie or hit TV show without any music and they all are just as boring. Music is essential for tension and mood.
@@spaceemperorkarl121 Depends on how well a scene is directed and edited. The T-Rex breakout in Jurassic Park has no score but the scene is no less effective.

Geordi's: 'What the fuck is happening right now?' look is priceless. He can feel himself being undermined by a guy who's supposed to be his subordinate and there ain't shit he can do about it, because Barclay's way is just better. You can almost hear him think: That's supposed to be 'Thank you, Mr LaForge. The captain always thanks me.'
I love how Riker is immediately pissed that Barclay just saved them all.
I always thought that Riker was a fucking asshole! I never liked him!
Barclay stepped ALL OVER the chain of command by going directly to the Captain. That is why Riker's angry. Barclay was right, but he ignored "the way things are done". Startfleet is still military enough that any junior officer bypassing his department head *and* the executive officer is sure to get in trouble. Being RIGHT and having so little time to act or explain the action would not necessarily save Barclay's backside. Picard thanking Barclay by name signaled "let it go" to Riker. The look on the female engineer's face says it - she knows Barclay really dove head first in a big pile of ... trouble. If Picard had said "Thank you, Mr LaForge" or "Thank you, Engineering"...Barclay would have been up on charges in an hour. Punishment would probably be light since they *are* still alive only because of Barclay but it would have been on his record.

"I'm willing to entertain suggestions!"
"Recommend accelerating to Warp 5 or higher and dropping a few torpedoes as we go. We do have the ability to do both of these things without difficulty, sir. We might consider firing multiple simultaneous Phaser beams, since I BELIEVE we have more than one aft array. If we only have ONE aft phaser array... then we will die because of a very stupid design flaw."
Galaxy class instantly has access to four times its shield strength; this knowledge/method certainly would’ve been passed on
Thank you Mr. Barclay! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sad thing about some of these scenes is that you fell Riker is just reading script actually meant for Pickard. For example: "Ensign, take us away from it. One quarter impulse." That's a command decision that only Picard would make. But you get the feeling in the script, after Picard says a few lines, they give the remainder to Riker just so he has something to say. I mean, for all you know, PIcard's next line would be an irritated: "Screw that. Half impulse!"
What I never understood is couldn't they have jumped to warp 9 right after they fired a photon torpedo to outrun the shockwave?
Barclay could have conquered the borg empíre. what a missed chance.
"an explosion this close can cripple us"
I never understood this. their shields are still up. so if just 1 torpedo can cripple the enterprise... how do they win any battles?
It's more dramatic that way. No other reason.
it's because of how much energy that specific probe had going on
usually they dont use the torps at maximum yield
"I'm sorry f i overstepped my authority"
"Well, you know damned well you did that. I want to know how you did that to the shields!"
Its a bit of a weird conundrum they're in here, why didn't they go from warp 2 to warp 9 to put distance between them and the probe, then fire torpedoes? Because it wasn't in the script, presumably.

Sorry if I overstepped.
No Reg, that kind of oversteppage is encouraged around here.
Worf only got green light because it wouldn't have any effect.
Also, if they have to be so desperate to be overclocking their phasers, maybe Worf should honor that and not sweep the beam over the probe, but focus it on one point.
But actually, if the regular one had zero effect, they should have known this wouldn't help either.
I'd have moved away sooner, and gone to warp as soon as it was clear the probe was matching speed.
Also, visually the distance is totally fine for photon torpedoes. ... And I also seem to remember you can prime those things with lower intensity.
They should have started the whole thing by examining why and how it is overloading the array's fusion reactors. This could very well be another energy vampire.
Good LORD! I did subscribe!
It’s a good thing nobody on the Enterprise had an easily exploited vulnerability like LaForge’s visor. I’d hate to see anything happen to Starfleet’s premier flagship of the 24th century.
