nicholas grace was the best ever sheriff, he is the sheriff of nottingham. whenever i think of the sheriff of nottingham, nick grace will always spring to mind instantly. and this was my favourite series in 1984.
Grace's sheriff, to my knowledge, is the only one who actually gets the better of Robin Hood on more than one occasion and even kills the rebel. He portrays the sheriff as cunning and educated and not brainless like so many who play the role.
We Sri Lankans loved this show. and still we love it. But we hated the sheriff so much as kids. But now we know mr. Grace was doing a great job. He is a true acting legend. We wish you long life sir. You will be rememberd for ever by a whole nation
Nicholas Grace was an extremely underated character actor. His portrayal of Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisited was singularly brilliant and magnificently memorable. His Sheriff of Nottingham in the wonderfully Ethereal 'Robin of Sherwood' took this sublime series to another level.
"And when will the ceremony take place, my lord?" "When I'm drunk enough to go through with it!" hahahaa he is the best sheriff of Notthingham EVER, and he was the most funny character in the series :D
This series never dates, it always looks authentic. Grace was the best sheriff, Praed the best Robin, Trott the best Marian, Winstone the best Scarlett, Addie the best Gisburne & so on. They keep trying but it will NEVER be bettered! The scripts, music, acting, sets, costumes, make up, nothing can be faulted......
Ray Winstone (Will Scarlett) made it to Hollywood. It is beyond me why Nickolas Grace did not made it to there. He can easily act so convincingly like Christopher Waltz as a character actor. This TV serie would not have been such a success without Mr.Grace as The Sheriff and Clannad with their music.
I agree, Nickolas Grace is absolutley brilliant. But maybe he didn't want to go to Hollywood? A lot of it has to do with luck, too. Or a string of decisions you make in your life. I think he'd be too good for Hollywood :-)
@@peterknutsen3070 Michael left the show for a play on Broadway, not Hollywood (I think musical plays are his true passion?) Ended up in Hollywood anyway for a short time. Not sure how much his experiences might have influenced Grace, but it's very possible he simply never felt like leaving his own country.
Robin of Sherwood! So happy to have the DVD box set. I love this TV series. What a nice surprise to see Lewis Collins in an episode. Anyone agrees with that? Michael Pread is the best Robin Hood we can have! I will always love Robin of Sherwood!
They forgot his funniest scene, Season 2 Children of Israel Gisbon: "my lord i thought...." Sherriff: "you thought Gisbon did u, what a pity i wasnt here. When did u have this thought of yours? While i was in London. Or was it more recent? Surely such an earth shattering event would linger in the memory. PRICELESS!
I missed this show when it first aired. I was pretty young, and American (still am the latter). I just watched the series (God, I love the internet) and really the Sheriff is the best character. Looked much better with the beard though.
I wish you had - Sir Guy - My lord, I thought- Sheriff - You thought?!? When did such a miraculous thing happen? Did the sky fall? Did the earth quake! Or perhaps when I was being attacked?!?
I love the way the episode 'Sheriff of Nottingham' finishes on a high note for the Sheriff. Even tho he's the villain, Philip Marc was a real cunt and this one made the audience root for De Rainalt. One of my favourite episodes "leave Nottingham to this.....posturing catamite" Nickolas Grace was fucking brilliant.
brilliant series by HTV ..still as good today as then..another great line from the sheriff..sympathisers dont do anything but sympathise gisburne!! shown originally at around teatime 5pm u.k. nicholas grace was fantastic and major part in shows success..thanks for the upload.
@vivellasmum You took the words out of my mouth. This is and will ever be the best Robin Hood performance. Although I liked the version with Crowe and Blanchet, it will never match this one. The authentic Middle Age music of Clannad, the filming in the forest, the mystical Middle Age atmosphere. This series is timeless..
Philip Marc, the real Sheriff of Nottingham in King John's time, was every bit as clever, nasty and ruthless as the one portrayed by Nicholas Grace. He ran a huge swathe of the north Midlands and did it extremely effectively, so effectively that everybody hated him and come Magna Carta he was specifically named as one of those to be thrown out of England, along with his brothers. He was trusted by John for his personal loyalty and his ability to keep his part of the kingdom safe for John, especially when Louis invaded England with a huge French army. Oh, and for his efficiency in collecting taxes :) Nottingham Castle housed some important prisoners. Being built atop Castle Rock, that rocky outcrop was a maze of tunnels and underground chambers, ideal for holding large numbers of people. The Sheriff almost certainly extorted payments from those who could afford it for luxuries like clean straw, edible food, water (or ale,) and candles or rush torches. If Robin had been thrown into that prison it is unlikely he would have escaped without inside help.
In what episode is the part where Gisburne is like: "But my lord, I thought - "had And Sherrif is like: "Thought!! You thought?!? And when did you have this thought of yours... because it was this morning when I had mine: 'Where is Gisburne, where is the escort?'" Loved that part.
Just two of my favourites are missing: The first encounter with Hubert de Giscard ( the bathtub scene ) and the famous scene with the boy and the apple. I believe both are in the last part with Michael Pread as Robin.
Grace was better, Rickman was good but it was an imitation. That film stole a lot from the series - the character of Naseer was a direct life. Not a patch on the TV show

Best ever Sherrif. Whilst he never gets the better of Robin Hood, he is still the wealthiest and most powerful man in the area throughout, so in a sense never loses. Love how him and his brother Abbot Hugo combine their powers to get the whole area in their pocket.
@vksasdgaming9472 Robert de Rainault always had the financial victory. Himself and his brother Abbot Hugo controlled Nottingham. Robin Hood was a nuisance. That being said, without the adversarial plot between the Sherrif and Robin there is no story.
@@MarkL-we8uk He is overworked official trying to do very thankless task and he isn't too happy about it and if he doesn't do his job it will mean someone else does and gets the perks of his job. Can't remember exact plot of episode, but it involved Sheriff being thrown into arranged marriage with unwilling bride and opposite, romantic interest of said bride and Robin's band of outlaws being stuck in middle. As conclusion bride runs away with her actual romantic interest so three people get what they want with that and Robin's involvement gives him good alibi to snatch some tax money to his own coffers and Robin's crew basically get nothing for their trouble but satisfaction of humiliating Sheriff. Bee stings hurt, but unexpected success soothes that pain.
Man that got to be the best sheriff ever even better than Rickmans performance in Robin Hood prince of Thieves. Is it wrong of me to root for The sheriff when he is played by such great actors since Robin often is played by some kind of halfwit *coughcostnercough*.
Here goes nothing... I think Keith Allen's sheriff in BBC's series is the best I've seen. He's got character, he doesn't overplay it, his constant teeth grinding, swearing, yelling... "la-de-dah-de-dah"... Keith Allen's sheriff is probably the closest to this one, except... slightly madder. I like this one "My lord, I must protest. - I'd rather you didn't" lolol ... but I guess it's a matter of opinion.
You have to admit that we have at least the opportunity to launch a lawsuit against our politicians or the police force etc. It needs a lot of time but the tribunals of Guantanamo have been declared to be illegal by the US supreme court. I don't think that evil is the right term. They're corrupt, or powerless, or lost the grip. The most people will be consumed by the system sooner or later.

The Sheriff and Gisburne were excellent as the 'baddies'. A wonderful series!
I was lucky to meet Nicolas Grace at a RoS Con. He is fabulous!
I love his cunning Sherif! Him and Gisburn arguing... Priceless!
Nick is a friend of mine. I see him most of the time. He's doing good
Glad to know it. This series is timeless and his work in it is a joy.
You couldn't get a better Sheriff of Nottingham.

“Cut me again and you’ll lose your fingers!”

sheriff was my favorite chaacter in this wonderful show
Nicholas Grace would have been great in Blackadder. If Rowan Atkinson was never cast I could see Grace playing the lead in it.

Nick made this role his own the best Sheriff and Michael Praed best Robin
This was a great show!
Watching the sheriff shit on people never, ever gets old. Just one of the many things that makes this show so awesome.
When I"m drunk enough to go through it! Ha Ha.
So much familiars scenes, Guy Gisburne and sheriff nottingham, nostalgiaa.

Considering what a catamite is, I love that line went out at Saturday teatime 😆
He has the best lines in all the of the film! Best character!!!
The scene with the kid at 3:02 is absolutely brilliant....

The Sheriff of Nottingham, the character you love to hate! 😁

yay! thank you for this. Now I'm almost perfectly happy - just missing my favourite bathtub tantrum scene and the run in with the Old Prisoner ;)
He had some great lines ^_^
Credit should go to Richard Carpenter and Anthony Horowitz for writing some of the finest lines..
Nickolas Grace is without one of the most underrated British actors eve
“Are you questioning my…”
“Your honour? No no no no no. Just your ability to count.”
Ha ha, never asume anything Gisburne, except an occasional air of intelligence. Brilliant :p
Great acting!! Simply great.
yep, he went to america to join the cast of dynasty, he played a prince or something like that.
he never should have left ROS
He went to do a musical on Broadway. It didn't work out for him, but you don't know these things unless you try.

Nicholas Grace genius!

The first encounter with Hubert de Giscard ( the bathtub scene ) and the famous scene with the boy and the apple.

This nicholas grace guy PWNS everyone. Good actor.
The only sheriff in live action form I believe to kill Robin hood , he is the best !
Grace was better, Rickman was good but it was an imitation. That film stole a lot from the series - the character of Naseer was a direct life. Not a patch on the TV show
GREAT shout!
Yes I like the role of the Sheiff of Nottingham
Indeed he did, and as far as I know Mr Rickman said as much.
He looks so much like Paul Giamatti it is uncanny...........
Today he would have called him a terrorist, not a rebell.
Even in a wide shot, at low definition he's recognizable. The wolf cult leader is none other than Mr. Hand from Dark City. Even uses the same voice.
,,,,your sweating like a farrowing sow.....classic sheriff

CZcams's subtitles can be unreliable and hilarious.
Nickolas Grace wiped the floor with Alan Rickman and his daft dyed hair
Rickman did not have time for nuance. He was still hilarious.
Alan Rickmans Sheriff stole alot from Nickolas Graces performance, sarcastic, witty and slightly mad!
They stole the Saracen/Moor character from Robin of Sherwood too.
Robert Addie 🖤💔❤️.

Absolutely right!
vi la serie de morrillo, x acá nada más la han pasado una sola vez
I love that he plays the role as a world weary civil servant, who is surrounded by idiots 😆
Some things never change

He looks somehow like Tim Curry
