How to patch velocity in four levels of complexity - with Teia vcA Team

- Velocity is an underrated source of modulation in modular. Whether you like to play or sequence your modular, a velocity signal can be used for much more then adding dynamics to volume. In this video I go over patching velocity in four levels of complexity. Starting with patching basic volume dynamics, and then three concepts of adding depth to that basic setup.

Intellijel's Quad VCA just arrived in the mail, and I came across this video the next day. Now I've got some more great uses for the VCAs. I always learn a lot from your videos. Cheers.
Nice! The intellijel is a classic, enjoy the module and patching it! :)
Hello there and friendly greetings!
I was really waiting for another tutorial! Every time I discover a new way to enjoy modular synths even more! Thanks so much for your good work! :-D
Hey, that's lovely to hear! Thanks for letting me know, and enjoy :)
Great stuff as usual. Thx for the insights Monotrail
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, learned a few things. Thumbs still pressed for a bloom video!
Glad you liked it! I took on a bit to much promises to be honest, so started saying no to people approaching me. But space is clearing up, so it's still on my list :)
Awesome as usual! Another eye opener on something you always have before you when playing with modular via e.g. keystep pro - but never use it… must try this on my next live performance at Berlin Modular Society on August 11! 🤗
Glad to hear you got some use out of it! And happy to come listen to the results :)
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Dynamic video! 🤛🏻
Thank you! :)
Really great video. I love the diagrams, really helps to understand. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful :) Thought I could add something to the community using my visuals, it's really motivating to hear that people like them, cheers!
@@MonotrailTechTalk very, very helpful…..and makes your videos stand out.
Great video, now we are waiting for a review of that koszalin, like you made with the Doepfer 126-2
Thanks! And it's coming up :) Showed it of on purpose, it sounds great! Video on Timiszoara is coming end this month, Koszalin early next month!
@@MonotrailTechTalk Bought this teia vca, they are nice people...
In other hand, I prefer the sample sounds on your 126-2 video demo, than the koszalin´s ones, I recently listen... 😐
May I suggest you interview other modular/synth/sample/composer CZcamsrs to upscale your subscribers? Your channel is far too good to only have 10+k subscribers. Your channel is always spoken of highly on various modular chat rooms. It’s excellent. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hello there, thanks! I have been working a lot on my format and improving things over the last year. Was super excited to get to 10k in a fairly short time focusing just on the modular, but indeed, it's time for more steps! Think some team ups should definitely be part of my plans! Glad to hear the chat rooms are positive, and all hte best! :)
Dynamics is the key to interesting drum sequences and cumbersome to implement if you are sequencing in CV rather than midi. This could be a v neat solution to a major drawback in eurorack.
Hope you will do a logics video as brilliant as others 🙂
Hi there! It's on my list actually, but it's a pretty long list ;)
@@MonotrailTechTalk knowing your sense of detail I believe so 🙂
How do MIDI-to-CV modules or gear like the BeatStep deal with velocity in general? Do they change the velocity CV signal level only when a NOTE ON comes in, and hold that level until the next note? Or do they "gate" velocity (having it go back to zero when NOTE OFF event comes)?
(Noting that both type of signals could be converted to the other in any case, in one direction by AND-ing the velocity signal with the gate, and in the other with a sample and hold module)
Hi!! Thank you for this helpful video!!!
But I have a question, i have a BSP and an LXR Drum Module from Erica Synths, i would like to reach the more natural sound as possible from it using velocity (because at the moment it's SO linear!), but the BSP has just the trigger out for drums, do you think there is a way to change velocity on the drum sequencer using eurorack modules like the LXR?
Thank you in advance!! 🙏
Thanks, glad you liked it! The Drum section of the BSP doesn't have velocity outputs, but both melodic sequencers do. You can use both 1v/oct outputs, and both velocity outputs of the melodic parts to program 4 velocity sequences for drum modules. I did a video on the BSP a while ago, just in case you didn't see it: czcams.com/video/vwAAbIu4aKU/video.html
would you be able to use the mod cv from the regular keystep to achieve the cv necessary as described in your diagrams for velocity?
Hello! You can use any CV you like to create velocity, but it depends on how you can program it on the keystep. I think the mod cv is connected to the mod wheel/strip right? So you would need a way to sequence it, or check the manual if the keystep has a velocity sensitivity you can send to the mod out. What I am sure is possible, is connect the Keystep to a DAW, and use the DAW to send stepped values to the mod wheel/strip, and create sequences that way.
Thanks for another interesting video.
Though I like the idea of a "Velocity-VCA" for it's simplicity of usage I don't see that many advantages of using this over something like "Intelligel Quad VCA" or other VCAs, which can be used for several other tasks as well.
Am I missing something here?
Nope, it's just a variation with a different workflow and footprint. A quad VCA would be a bit bigger, and you'd need all 4 to make 2 VCA's with velocity. But indeed, all 4 would be separate usable. You could put two of these to create a setup for 4 velocity sensitive drum voices for example. But all just personal preferences depending on case and goals :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk My goal is to spend my money EFFECTIVELY, thus the question. I asked because I recreated that with the Matriarch, which of course already has VCAs on board.
Thanks.
I can´t find these patches and video in your patreon
It's nr 49 - Velocity patches - available in the 'All regular PDF sheets.zip'
*in pro wrestler voice* Brother, when are you gonna patch that peperomia!?
Hahaha, as soon as my Instruo Scion arrives!
@@MonotrailTechTalk lovely! You rolled with the joke, and taught me which module could actually accomplish the ridiculous task!
