  • Make a closed terrarium DIY -a sealed bottle garden filled with closed terrarium plants that thrive in a humid environment! The sealed terrarium creates an ecosystem in a bottle where plants for high humidity can survive for many decades! What's more exciting is that the terrarium plants are slow-growing, self-sustaining, and need no watering after planting!
Sealed bottle gardens are ideal for humidity-loving terrarium plants like ferns, pileas, peperomias, and moss plants. Shirley Bovshow shows you how to make a terrarium in a bottle by layering gravel, charcoal, and potting soil. Activated charcoal absorbs chemicals in the soil, water, and air that can build up inside your terrarium over time and damage your plants. Learn to make long-handled gardening tools so you can plant in a bottle with no problems!
Check out some oversized glass bottles on Amazon. Make sure to order a cork to fit opening or create a bottle top with a rolled cork sheet.

*Oh my goodness, I love her!!* 💚👏
This gardener could probably bring life to even the most sick, unhealthy, depressed rose in the whole entire world, *like me.*
I honestly feel life flowing through me when this lady speaks so passionate about her work and giving life to new little mini environments inside those jars!
    *She's an ARTIST!!* đŸŒ±đŸŒș
Shirley, thank you so much for inspiring me and making me feel a little bit more alive.
    Truly.
This takes away so much of my anxiety and makes me remember when I was very little, I wanted to grow lots of miniature gardens in my room haha, but mom wouldn't let me so I built them with paper and clay (I LOVE miniatures.)
This video really gave me more than I expected it would...
*Bless your sweet, uplifting, lovely spirit, Shirley!*
You're my role model now, I'm so happy I found you! 😊
This rose is definitely not done blooming yet! 👏đŸŒč

Apart from her horrendous explanation of the water cycle?? 😂 Heat makes it condense? Don't think that's correct. It evaporates into droplets? Hmm đŸ€” don't think that's how it works đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™‚ïžđŸ˜‚

I just feel the need to elaborate on the science so everybody can understand 😀
Plants can thrive on either oxygen (photorespiration) or carbon dioxide (photosynthesis). However, the levels of each gas determine which process dominates. This is how the air inside the bottles is recycled.
The water is recycled through evapotranspiration which is water loss through small openings in the leaves (stomata) that open and close depending on moisture conditions. So the water goes up through the roots and out through the leaves contributing to the humidity. The water that is in the dirt also exhibits a vapor pressure inside the bottle but it equilibrates at a certain pressure depending on the amount of water added and temperature. Hence why the initial amount of water is important. Now we have a bunch of water in the air but the cool bottle surface promotes water condensation. The water trickles down and that's the water cycle.
The initial nutrients in the soil are used for growth via photosynthesis and photorespiration. The plants drops leaves or other parts that decay and produce some carbon dioxide and nutrients that refertilize the soil.
And there you go! Fairly straightforward. I think.

On top of that it’s SUPER forgiving and hardy, I have one that’s a year old that I don’t have any activated charcoal in at all. I also recommend adding some springtails or woodlice, these guys will help keep the leaf litter and algae in check, they’ll breed on their own and woodlice will keep their own populations in check.

It's a beautiful art. I wasn't even skilled or well read on what I was doing, and my first project was a rescue jar, and I revitalized it. Ended up lasting almost 8 years without a single watering or opening of the lid.
It died from a move I made and it sat it below freezing for far too long.... it was a few days I had it in that kind of environment.
Completely decimated the environment within the jar.... i was pretty upset about it.
To this day havnt started a new ecosystem....
After this video, I'm already on the way to buying a nice sealed 10 gallon glass jar, from hobby lobby.

I know its over a year old...but I gotta share. I rescued ten tadpoles several years ago. Four made it to frog hood, but only one actually survived. It was a green tree frog. It was super super tiny. I went to great lengths to raise this dag-gone frog! I raised fruit-flies to feed it. Then every day captured bunches of them and released them into a little gallon goldfish bowl. I fitted a round glass cutting board that happened to fit right on top of the fish bowl. Because the fruit flies were so tiny, I used thin a strip of sticky foam strips you use to seal your windows from drafts....putting it around the top edge of the fish bowl. When I sat the round glass "cutting board" on top of the foam strip at the top of the glass bowl, it not only sealed it so the flies couldn't escape, it silenced the awful sound of glass hitting glass when putting the top on the fishbowl.
I made my baby frogs home as "natural as I could. Small plants, sand and dirt, and water. It was beautiful and my frog lived for over a year. After removing his corpse 😭😭 I left the little terrarium alone for a while, in no rush to dismantle my little ecosystem. I left it unopened for over a year before opening it. It's still growing beautifully! I added water once, and that's it. Its like a mini rainforest! The spider plant i had in there didn't make it. But a type of wandering Jew and a type of very popular Ivy (not philadandrum) have filled this tank beautifully! My kids and husband are amazed...because you can tell that it's had to have been left for a long time to do what it's done. It really is the coolest thing. It's been opened only twice in almost four years now. I just leave it by a window and that's all. I hope to do another one in an actual large bottle one day...like the ones I'm this video.
