  • This week, I started taking Spanish classes, and as you can imagine, I have a LOT of thoughts. 😅 It’s been a while since I was a student, and being on the receiving end of a class has taught me so much about how important pronunciation, mindset, and strategy are when learning a second language.
    Here’s the vocabulary method I developed and am now using to learn and remember new words and grammar structures bit.ly/3WIb2LV

    Haddar! Thanks for sharing your experience! As a Spanish native speaker, I think you're making a lot of progress! As far as pronunciation is concerned, I think that in most English and Spanish schools, most of the teachers avoid teaching phonetics because many lack the theoretical foundation to teach it. For instance, when you say the word "leer", it sounds pretty good, but I can't help but to notice that you're producing an English /e/ not a neutral "Spanish" /e/. In that sense, not many English teachers have specialized in pronunciation and it is a challenge to explain even the sounds in their native language. I hope you get the hang of it soon. Wish you the best!! 😊♥️

    I don’t know who to believe cause some people say it’s easier to learn spanish than to learn English, I believe it depends on the individual and one’s capacity to learn

      In Spanish there are only 5 vowels and the pronunciation is always the same.
      The most difficult part is to conjugate the verbs and the articles el for masculine and la for feminine.
      Another thing is how to roll the r and rr like in cara and carro.
      The difference between para y por.
      The different words depending on the stress ( el acento)

      It really depends on what your first/native language is, or if you speak any other Latin language. I'm a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese, and, in terms of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, Portuguese and Spanish share a lot of similarities. Does it make Spanish easier for me than English? From my personal experience studying Spanish, not at all. I love listening to Spanish songs, and I love singing them, cause it's easy for me to pick up pronunciation in Spanish. However, Spanish grammar has always been my nightmare, it's terribly difficult and complex in comparison to English grammar. I suck at conjugating verbs in Spanish. That's why I've never achieved an advanced level of Spanish and, eventually, I ended up giving up on Spanish, cause it's not really important in my life 😅, although I speak some Spanish (very little).

      In Spanish, like in other Roman languages, you have very clear rules. So if you learn a set of them, you are able to apply them all the time in many situations without trying to guess what to do like in English.

    A tip for you the host: In elementary school in Spanish-speaking nations from first grade to fourth teachers read the verbs aloud and make the students repeat each conjugation: Amo, amas, ama, amamos, amais (used only in Spain) and aman. Three verbs, only three, are the model for all verbs in Spanish: Amar, temer, and partir. So "llegar," which ends in "ar" like "Amar," will have the same conjugations than "amar: "Yo llego, tú llegas, él llega, nosotros llegamos, vosotros llegáis, ellos llegan." Unfortunately, there are irregular verbs such as "caber," and here you have to memorize the conjugations: "Yo quepo, tú cabes, él cabe, nosotros cabemos, vosotros cabéis, ellos caben." Oftentimes those of us native Spanish speakers mess up when dealing with irregular verbs. Also, the accent of Argentina and Uruguay is a mix of French and Italian, and only in Spain the "z" is pronounced sticking the tongue as we do to pronounce "th."

      P.S.: The most common mistake that non-native Spanish speakers make is neutralizing the vowels like in English. The rule is: Never neutralize vowels in Spanish, or Italian. Spanish is phonetically very simple: Learn how the vowels and diphthongs sound and you will correctly pronounce all words in Spanish.

    Hey, Hadar, I don't know if you were told that, but the difference between "tú" and "usted" changes a little bit from Mexican Spanish and European Spanish. I don't know what kind of dialect you're learning, but the example I mentioned is just one of the many things I HATE the most about Spanish 😂 Spanish can be unnecessarily complex a lot of the time.

    I completely agree with you that pronunciation needs to be taught well from the start. When you realise that some languages, like Spanish, are syllable-timed, while others, like English, are stress-timed, some things that seemed obscure at first become clear.

  • @ernestalagarda8014
    @ernestalagarda8014 Před 22 dny

    Hi Hadar!
    Congratulations for start studying Spanish! If you don’t mind; I’d correct one thing you’ve said: the difference between the verb “leer” in infinitive and “lee” in second person singular present indicative is this final “r”, of course. But this “r” pronunciation isn’t as important as you say to difference the verb tenses. There are some Spanish dialects that don’t pronounce this final “r” in infinitives, and they don’t have any problem to difference infinitive (or imperative) to present tense.
    That’s because the authentinc importance is, surprise surprise, the stress. As in English. All Spanish verbs are last-syllable stressed, all of them. So, it doesn’t matter really if you pronounce “leer” or “leé” to recognize the infinitive form, what actually matters is the stress in the final syllable. The other tense you named, “lee”, the segond person of singular of indicative mode, is second-to-last syllable stressed, and that’s the crucial difference.
    Follow me for more pronunciation tips and…no, seriously: what you say you miss in your in-person classes I think is a general lack teaching languages when it comes to academic way to teach, maybe all around the world.
    I offer myself to help you to get practice in speaking, gramar, vocabulary, etc, by talking. Spanish and Catalan, if you want.

  • @SANDRASIERRALTA

    Hi Hadar! In some moment of your journey learning Spanish, you will notice there are SO MANY (and I mean a LOT) words in Spanish that are very similar in meaning and spelling, but the pronunciation differs in the primary stress syllable, that makes me crazy. It is excellent because you can increase your vocabulary very quickly, but it is bad because you misspronunciate the words.
    I can´t wait for the click moment when you realize (in your very organized teacher´s brain) how to recognize them-not falling under English rules, but another genuine way to put the stress in the right place when you see those words .
    My best wishes to you, kisses, Sandra Sierralta

  • @jackelineayalagutierrez6485

    I'm completely agree with Hadar about it has been a common mistake when people teach a language most of time they starts focus on grammar, and vocabulary(it is very important), BUT teach the properly way to pronounce words in a New language, it is gold for the students, isn't it?

    Here in Québec, the government pays me to learn French but it is hard to go to classes again after my age (40s) and having speaking other 3 languages before. It is too time wasted, I get the lessons quickly, some subjects and listening practices don’t interest me, and the drills and pronunciation part are lacking. However, I cope well besides of hating presentations and homework because I have a life outside classroom. To solve this, I have to say that I’ve been applying your methods of muscle memory and shadowing by myself, and I’ve been more specific in putting my energy in my targets which are having to be able to communicate informally and taking the official French exam (which results I have to show many times here).

    @georgebetrian676 Před 26 dny

    Classes are not always mean to understand all the content. The utility of the classes is also to be like a map to know the existence of the things that I'm not aware of. For example, speaking about reflexive verbs. I could have no idea what they are for. But I wil write in my notebook: "Reflexive verbs" just to acnowledge their existence, and later, on my own, I will try to figure out what they are, even if I can not incorporate them in my mind. And nowadays, one can ask a lot of questions to different AIs (chat-GPT, Gemini, Copilot etc).
    Learning grammar doesn't always mean grasping the structure but rather memorizing sentences. I may not comprehend reflexive verbs or particles in, but I will memorize 'Me lavo las manos' for 'I wash my hands' in Spanish. Understanding the structure isn't necessary at first; memorization suffices. Over time, memorizing these chunks of expressions will naturally lead to an understanding the grammatical structure.

    I taught English and Spanish for many years and very often had to explain in English to students who were learning Spanish and viceversa. In my opinion English is much, much easier than Spanish. Just have a look at a same paragraph written in both languages, and you will immediately notice that the Spanish one is always longer than the English one. The only thing that Spanish has easier than English is the pronunciation of vowels. There is no comparison in the case of grammar, Spanish language is way more complex.
