Too deep in the woods to retrieve once the work is done, so they left it behind. That's my theory anyway. Must be nice though, having that much money to just throw away on equipment. Even back then, I imagine that was a nice chunk of change.

The old roller is a Raygo 2-36, they were bought out by Caterpillar in 1985.
