'Athai Madi Methaiyadi' is a beautiful song from the Tamil movie Karpagam. This song portrays the deep affection of an aunt (referred to as "athai" in Tamil) for her niece, whom she cherishes as her own child. The lyrics convey a touching sentiment, especially when the aunt declares that she has never worshiped any deity but sees the divine, the goddess, in the little girl . The song's gentle melody and tender lyrics make it a perfect lullaby, showcasing the rich tradition of Tamil cinema in creating emotionally evocative music that transcends time.
The song is distinguished by its exquisite lyrics penned by Vaali and the melodious music composed by M.S. Viswanathan. The legendary playback singer P. Susheela's soulful rendition elevates the emotional impact of the song, making it a timeless classic. The combination of Vaali's heartfelt lyrics, Viswanathan's enchanting music, and Susheela's expressive voice creates a memorable musical experience that has resonated with listeners for generations.

Slightly slowed down version with the pleasant string instruments backing literally taking us all to heaven !! Very soft subtle expressive singing from you apt for a lullaby song such as this !!
You certainly deserve the appreciation you get for celebrating old classic Tamil film music the way you do Sis !!

    First and foremost:
A hello to the big fella called the Cello (and the Cellist Francis)
Another hello to that gifted lady in yellow.
Movie Karpagam (1963) P.Suseela Viswanathan Ramamurthy lyrics Vaali
This black and white movie won the National award for the best thamizh film that year. From the profits the movie made, the director KS Gopalakrishnan (who specialized in melodramatic family stories) built karpagam studio in Chennai named after the film.Debut movie for actress KR Vijaya. Though her character had a premature death half way through the movie, did not prove to be a bad omen for KR Vijaya and she went on to act more than 500 films.
A MSV musical A MSV classical A MSV kallakkal
P.Suseela is the only playback singer featured in this movie sound track with another couple of songs from Suseela in this movie: Aayiram iravugal varuvadhundu and Mannavanae azhalaamaa kaanneerai vidalaamaa worth mentioning.
“Athai madi” based on ragam Harikamboji (sung by Madhu without any hurry :-)
Some classical soft and soothing melodies in Harikamboji in thamizh movies:
    Ennirendu padhinaaru vayadhu
    Athai madi methai yadi
    Anbulla maanvizhiyae
    Orae paadal unnai azhaikkum
    Sumai thaangi saaindhaal
    Mellappo mellapo melidaiyaallae
    Vizhiyae vizhiyae unakenna velai
    Kungumapottin mangalam
    Pachai maram ondru
    Malargalai pol thangai urangugindraal
    Kelvi pirandhadhu andru
    Silar sirippaar silar azhuvaar
    Kalangallil aval vasandham
Unnai ondru kaetpaen unnmai solla vaendum
    Muththaana muththallavo
    Amadhiyaana nadhiyinilae odam
    Thookkam un kanngalai thazhuvattumae
    Naan malarodu thaniyaaga
    Kannukku mai azhagu
And the list is endless and I am already gasping for breath :-)
The Cello and violin combo (interludes and towards the end) was mesmerizing and was in absolute harmony giving a symphony feel. Kudos to the artists.
    Getting technical:
The Cello and violin combo notes gave me a feeling of listening to Madurai Mani Iyer’s popular English note (Ga Ma Ga Ri Ga Pa Ri Ga Sa) which was based on ragam Sankarabaranam. Though Athai Madi is based on ragam Harikamboji, got the same feel since Sankarabaranam's notes when shifted using Graha bedham (keeping the note frequencies same but shifting the shadjam to the next note in the raga) yields 5 other major Melakarta ragas, namely kalyani, Hanumatodi, Natabhairavi, Kharaharapriya and Harikamboji. That explains the same look and feel between Athai Madi and Madurai Mani Iyer’s English note.
Here’s the link to that popular English note (worthy) by the Carnatic genius Madurai Mani Iyer:
    czcams.com/video/qZDHwkUYbqs/video.html
For Madhu, well it was just another day in the office or a walk in the park…and she breezed through the rendition as would a Porsche through a trafficless highway/expressway or like a hot knife through butter.
    “Under the microscope” moment:
“Aadi viLLAyaadammaa” passed through the scanner “mostly” unscathed :-) and just glided through like a well soaked gulab jamum would, through the throat (though the first time around at the start it sounded “Haadi vilayadamma” )
    The Last word:
    Pazhamayilae pudhumai kaanna mudiyumaa ???
Mudiyum says Madhu and the proof is right here in Athai madi :-)
With the single kid trending, the GenNext gonna miss the Athai madi :-(
Athai madi will become extinct soon like the
    Sparrows in Chennai
    VHS tapes and VCRs
Yashica and Nikon cameras with film rolls
    Landline phones with the dial
    Wall clocks with the pendulum
Thamizh movies without the “blood”y violence (what started in Vikram & Jailor continues unabated till Garudan and Maharaja :-( )
Thamizh movies with 3 or 4 melodious duets/songs.
Overall, as a child, aunty’s laptop (Athai madi) was a lot more comforting than the present day laptops from Lenovo, Dell and Acer :-)
This Mandaveli Madhu Iyer’s athai madi would put not just the kids but most elders to sleep - so soothing and melodious :-)

Thank you for yet another beautiful detailed well thought and carefully analysed feedback on this rendition. Happy to know you enjoyed the interludes...
It is risky to recreate these masterpieces knowing it holds a very special place in everyone's hearts.. but adding own bgms is something that not many try since it could receive a lot of criticism... So a lot of thought and trials go into it to make sure the original bgms only enhance the existing compositiona and not bring it down by a by measure.. Thank you !!

@@madzi89 The blending of the new with the old is ur USP and I thought u nailed it this time around. As u rightly said this requires tight rope walking and any slip would become pillayar pidikka poi kuranga mudinja kadhai. Similar to ur experiments with bgms, this is something I want u to try in the future to become a fully rounded singer. A quick browse thru ur videos, I don't see that many pathos songs of Suseela, barring a ninaikka therindha manamae and a couple of others may be. Take a pathos song, say a nee illadha ulagathilae nimmadhi illai or Enge neeyo naanum ange unnodu, with minimal bgm, say an odd flute, violin, tabla and make a video bringing about the emotions in the voice itself with the voice modulations. Would be a good exercise for u to bring about the emotions in the voice itself.
Well, that's for an another day and let's enjoy athai madi presently :-)

@@madzi89 Having invoked the legend Madurai Mani Iyer and being a die hard fan of the legend who according to me is a GOAT (Greatest of all time) across genders when it comes to carnatic music. Thought I would share with u an anectode. Most pakkavadiyam artists would hestitate to share the stage with him. Even the veteran mridangam and violin accomplises would be caught napping because Mani Iyer would bring about his own variations and improvisations on the fly on the stage. This was not a deliberate act by the genius but when he is in a zone even he would not know how the next aalaap or swaram would come out of his mouth. If U are a fan of Mani Iyer any other carnatic musician will come a distant second. If u haven't heard just listen to his "Eppo Varuvaaro" and u would become his fan right there :-) As is the case with geniuses/prodigies like bharathiar, ramanujam, kannadasan, mandolin srinivas etc etc he also died at an young age of 55 in 1968.
