Jack’s father is being played by The Rolling Stones Keith Richards. When Johnny Depp first played Captain Jack Sparrow. He said part of his inspiration of his character was the public persona of Keith Richards. So, having Richards playing his Father brings the story a bit full circle.
Yup, just like having Sean Connery play Indiana Jones' father as Indy was initially an attempt by Spielberg to make a James Bond movie but he couldn't get the rights to make one so his Bond script was adapted into what eventually became Raiders of the Lost Ark.
A huge missed opportunity for the Pirates movies would be for Jack and Captain Teague to have an adventure ala The Last Crusade. I'm sorry, but I'd much rather see that father/child dynamic explored than Angelica and Blackbeard.
@@VegetaLF7 I've heard that before, but I just can't imagine a Bond movie where he's searching for the Ark of the Covenant. Indy's more based on the old Saturday matinee serials that Lucas and Spielberg grew up watching.
Paul McCartney was in this one too, pretty sure. He played Jack Sparrow's uncle lol.
Yeah, the plot of Raiders isn't really a Bond story, but the project began life as an attempt at making a Bond film. I should have elaborated more. From what I remember it was George Lucas who suggested adapting the story to be like the old serials and be more of an archeological adventure. The story developed from there, it was the project as a whole that began life as a dream to make it a Bond film. @@joeblankenship377

Meh, close enough.
Jack's Dad was in the last movie. Remember he asked him how is mum and he showed a shrunken head.
keeper of the code
Syrena kissed him in order for him to be able to breathe under water/not drown, he either then got turned into a Murman (most likely) or they found an island/a place where she went on land with him, getting her legs and they could live there together.
If you "stand watch", you are staying awake and guarding the ship, STANDING and WATCHING. 😁

Captain Teague was alluded to being Jack’s dad in At World’s End when Jack says “How’s Mum?”
The Spanish are actually my favorite part of this movie. They're less characters and more a force of nature - a ticking clock that the other privateers and pirates are racing against. They have no avarice, they are not tempted in any way by the fountain. You would expect, like Cutler Beckett from 3, that at any moment they could toss in and start playing 'the game' of the Caribbean but they don't. Their purpose is singular and the reveal that they're there to destroy the fountain rather than use it is, like the trade company of movies prior, a cool way to show the encroachment and eventual conquest of the Old world over the New, pushing the myth and piracy into ever shrinking spheres of influence until they are, inevitably, driven to extinction.
love a sneaky Sleepy Hollow reunion with Johnny Depp and Harry Potter's uncle

Of course. That's where he learned his signature walk.

@@oscardiggs246 Nah, they're spainfully obvious.
@Myndir I laughed way too hard at that dad joke.
Jack's dad is played by Keith Richards, of the Rolling Stones and I think that he is old enough to have been a real pirate.
Keith Richards is probably old enough to have founded piracy altogether.
Yes indeed.
That's the real issue with climate change. We need to consider what kind of world we're leaving behind for Keith Richards.
Keith cannot be killed by conventional weapons.

Jack loves himself, always has and always will. lol
Ashleigh. You’re adorable but Philip did not drown. Serena’s kiss helped him breathe underwater
"Has Jack finally been bested by a woman?" Reflect that in Ep1 when he's on the tiny island repeating "Why is the rum gone?" Its because Elizabeth set it ablaze as a signal fire. And the only way she could have done that is by drinking Jack under the table the night before. 😮
Pics or it didn't happen
he's never actually been that drunk xp
Elizabeth was not drinking most of the time she was just pretending.
The first 3 movies begin and close out the Will Turner X Elizaeth Swan saga, this one was supposed to start a new one...
Also in supplemental material it is said that because unlike Calypso who cheated on Davy Jones, Elizabeth Swan who remained loyal to Will for the 10 years they were apart broke the curse, and Will Turner was able to make land much more frequently as long as he still full-filled his duties to ferry souls.
I guess you have not seen Salazar's Revenge...
Angelique was played by Penelope cruz who was pregnant pretty far into this movie. Her twin sister did the far shots and action for her. Fun fact.
Do they have a dog?
Mónica Cruz but they are not twins
Hmmm, kinda gives a funny meaning to Capt. Jack's statement about if Angelica having a sister & a dog, he'd take the dog! I see what you did there St. NICHOLAS CROSS sir😜
Jack’s father was in the third movie. He was at the pirate meeting and he’s the keeper of the code.
He literally asked Capt. Tiege "How's Mum"

wow cant believe i never thought to suggest that but yeah that would be awesome to see her watch if she has not seen it
54:15 The guy didn't die. Earlier in the movie they said that a mermaid's kiss protects the sailor from drowning.
One thing to mention - Just, very carefully, examine the scene between Angelica and Jack:
"Jack, I love you!" - "As do I."
Now, read that again, keeping Jack's attitude over all 4 films in mind. Gives this interaction another, hilarious, spin.

Pre-production began a couple years ago then Amber Heard's Op-Ed came out accusing him of abuse and Disney fired him. After he won his case Disney thought his reputation would be too damaged, so they started moving ahead without him, but the fans spoke. Disney has now said they want Depp to reprise his role but not as the lead. Some argue he wasn't the lead after the first movie as the story evolved to center around Will and Elizabeth. Remember in 2 Jack was trying to get out of his contract with Jones. Elizabeth tricked him into sacrificing himself, and Jones' pet took him and the Pearl to the locker. In 3 the movie centers around Will and Elizabeth again, and Jack sacrificing his desire for immortality to save Will. And in 4 it's all about Barbosa (Barbados, if you're Ashleigh) getting revenge against and Revenge from Blackbeard. After the first movie Jack Sparrow has been the common thread that connects the story as opposed to the lead, BUT, Depp was billed as the lead. Disney, saying they want Depp to reprise his role but not as the lead, tells me they want to simply save his leading man salary but not sacrifice the story or his character. Depp has said he wants to give the character a proper send off and, having him billed as supporting in the 6th movie might be a good way to do it.
The problem first is for Disney to heal the rift between themselves and Depp. While we don't know the complete inner workings behind that, he's made it clear that he never wants to work for them ever again.
Ashleigh calling him Barbados instead of Barbosa is hilarious 😂
And Preacher man didn't die... a mermaids' kiss breathes air into him and she took him to the bottom to heal him 😉

but only applies for North American snakes
In the finale of POTC 3, everybody was like "Jack's got the map to The Fountain of Youth and he's gonna go after it"
Part 4 wasn't going to happen for awhile and I couldn't wait to see it.
The director Rob Marshall made "Into The Woods (2014) and Mary Poppins Returns" (2018).
Johnny Depp reteamed with Penelope Cruz (Angelica), a decade after Ted Demme's crime drama BLOW (2001) and both still got that chemistry.
I like how these movies tackle more of the myths and legends in those times.
The fountain, Mermaids, Blackbeard, etc made things more adventurous.
This one had mixed reviews.
All the signatures we know and Depp still holds it down with good ol' bravado.
This installment broke a lot of movie records in it's year of release and was the most expensive movie ever made for it's time.
Pirates 4 was a reunion of Johnny Depp & Penelope Cruz from a really good (albeit very sad) movie called Blow.
My favorite line in the movie; "shoot, save me the bother of the fall". That'd be me.
Oh, that snake (~30:16) is nothin to worry about. As the saying goes, "Red touches black, friend of Jack. Red touches yellow will kill a fellow."
Ah, but who is Jack? Sparrow? Or some other Jack? Can you trust someone who is friends with snakes? I'd say, if you don't know Jack, leave all snakes alone.
8:59 It _wouldn't_ be a movie in the POTC franchise without at least _one_ highly-improbably fight sequence.
That's Penelope Cruz!!! Your excitement over seeing mermaids is unmatched, lol. OMG I forgot the first mermaid was Amanda Seyfried. hahahahahaha... ASHLEY... "mermussy" oml

That part where he almost kisses her and then leaves is probably one of my favorite parts of the movie
Mermussy😂😂😂 I am 💀💀 telling the wife that later lol
In your last Pirates video, you asked how fun it would’ve been to see in 3D. I saw this film in IMAX 3D back in 2011, and this shot at 48:45-48:53 was one of the best moments and usage of 3D format.
Whale oil was a valuable commodity well up into the 20th century. It was a clean and efficient lamp fuel, and it made very fine soap. Even the original formula for margarine was based on whale oil. It was gradually replaced by petroleum and vegetable oils, which is the only reason some species of whales still exist--otherwise they'd have been hunted to extinction.
13:01 "I don't think I know this woman. She doesn't look familiar."
😳Penelope _Cruz?_ 😒Maybe I should just get my casket ready.

Jacks Father, Captain Teague, was Keith Richards (of the Rolling Stones) and was whom Johnny Depp had been patterning Captain Jack Sparrow after.
And the "Earring Lady" was Dame Judi Dench!
Sirens are a lot different from mermaids originally, despite being represented as pretty much the same thing throughout media. Sirens in Greek myth had no tie to the sea at all. They simply lived near the sea on a cliff and they were vultures with the faces of women. And they did have the enchanting singing powers to lure people to their death to eat them. Mermaids of course have always been depicted as half human, half fish. And they have different abilities depending on the source of the story 😎👌🏻
Ashleigh casually dropping Clerks references. You love to see it.
This first time I watched this movie I felt the exact opposite of how you felt. Since it wasn't continuing with the same trio as the first three, I found it hard to care much about the new characters. However, after a second watch I did appreciate it more. I still like the first three better, but this one was really isn't that bad.
The Spanish aren't minding their business; they're just ignoring the British. They don't see the British as any threat whatsoever.
This. Their refusal to even fight is an insult, them saying the British aren't even worth stopping to kill.
@@VegetaLF7 Yeah, for sure. lol. Absolutely.
@@patrickcromwell7554 you'd be amazed by the levels of hubris of the Spanish empire. The British empire eventually took that pride away from Spain through cunningness and eventually with the full might of the British armada. Spain at that time was a decadent empire as the British were rising due to technological, social and legal advancements that allowed them to spring jump over Spain and all the other kingdoms into the new full blown empire bringing the supposed "pax britannica"
@@hanzo2001 All true; but unfortunately I know people even now that have that level of smug, arrogance. lol. Some of them are even religious. I'm glad that the level of religious fanaticism has feminised to the point where it doesn't dictate the morality of entire countries, the way it used to. But it's still a driving force for so many. In my opinion Religion - as we know it today - is the single greatest hoax ever pulled of in ham history. Because it's been everywhere since humans HAD history to speak of. And the Spanish depicted in this movie are as fanatically religious as you can get.
@@patrickcromwell7554 I don't entirely agree on the religious subject. Being an atheist myself, I prefer to live my life surrounded by religious people rather than other atheists.
In both our minds it looks exactly like a hoax but its societal effects are real.
As always, everything is better in moderation. The excesses of previous empires and the pride that took them down is a great opportunity for improvement and you are right that many countries have tempered their religious fervor to the benefit of other religions and atheists alike. However, I do not think that absence of religion is a positive outcome from what I have had to witness, from the birth and death of atheism+ to the rise of ... whatever the hell is happening today... and the unhinged hubris and elitism that other "atheists" push everyone around with. I put it in quotes because I do not think them to be actual atheists, they just replaced their belief structure and their value hierarchy for a different one on fiat. This is the French Revolution experiment that we are all glad never came to fruition: the supposed "religion of rationality".
If religions exist everywhere and have been born from every corner of the world, I think it speaks to an intrinsic human need. I don't know why I don't seem to have this "quality", maybe I'm "mentally handicapped" in this area and therefore cannot join in jubilee with the rest. Who knows. But I won't be casting criticism willy nilly on others because of their superstitions. If it helps them get to the next day even when the times are dire, I can live with that no problem
Black Beard has rules..without them, they would just live with the animals🤣🤣🤣🤣

20:02 "Which one of you unfortunate souls stood watch?"
"I guess I don't really know what 'stood watch' means."
Oh. Well, yeah. It can be kind of a tricky concept. Think of it like this.
It's a state of responsibility. When you want to drive somewhere and you get in your car to start it, the whole time the car is in operation, you are standing watch. If you need food or a nap, you make it a point to park the car some place first, because it's dangerous and irresponsible to do otherwise.
When you get hired as someone's babysitter, you agree to regularly stand watch over their kids.
Any time of day or night, the receptionist of a hotel, motel or air bnb is standing watch.
With a ship at sea, whoever is handling the wheel is standing watch. Whoever is up in the crows nest with a set of binoculars, watching the sea, is standing watch. In each case, they dare not step away without finding someone else to stand in for them.
With a plane, in the air, whoever is handing the controls is standing watch. That's why commercial airliners and cargo planes have at least two pilots. That way, they can take turns standing watch.
If you have occasion to undergo inpatient, overnight care in a hospital, you can be sure, 24 hours a day, there are medical personnel standing watch.
Whoever is standing guard at the main gate of a _military_ base is standing watch.
It's especially important that any given ship at sea, any time of day or night, have people standing watch to handle the helm, occupy the crows nest, and be available to handle any watch-related _errands._
One key complication when the _Titanic_ hit the iceberg was all the difficulty they ran into finding people who could respond, because in those days, shipboard telegraph watches tended to be unmanned, overnight, so most of the ships that _could_ receive their distress call _didn't._ They had no one manning the machine.
Does this help?

That’s Penelope Cruze. She played Johnnie deps wife in Blow. The movie about George Young. Good movie. Lots of cocaine use.

Not only did Penelope Cruz play Angelica in this movie , but she actually was " with child " during the filming . You've met Jack's father and mum , just wait until you meet his uncle . See if you can guess who plays him . Lol .
Yep that whole scene was tongue in cheek “I’m with child” she was. “If you had a sister and a dog” her sister actually filmed a lot of her parts due to her being very very pregnant (far away shots where the baby bump would have been visible and for stunts)
So, it was quite a shock to find this in a used bookstore as a pre-existing pirate novel with no attachment to the franchise. Reading it after watching the movie was an experience, as I got to see just how much work the screenwriters had to go to to insert the PotC characters into a story that never had them.

Fun fact: the reason the fourth Pirates movie seems different than the others is because it's adapted from the 1987 novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. I wish they had continued this storyline; I was getting sick of the romance storyline from the first three!
The priest isn't dead, just before they tried to catch a mermaid one of the sailors said a kiss from a mermaid allows you to breath underwater. We met Jack’s dad in At World’s End. He was Capt Teague…the one with the pirate rule book at Shipwreck Cove.
As mentioned on the last one, Captain Teague is Jacks dad, player by Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones.
I found the choice between sister & dog funnier knowing that at one stage of filming, Penelope Cruz was pregnant and her sister Mónica acted as body double🖤🏴☠️
I wondered why Ashleigh had no comment on the fact that Captain Teague was Jack's dad in the last film, let alone that he was Keith Richards. I thought she had to know because they talked about Jack's mom. Then it seems like she doesn't realize his dad in this film was also the Pirate King (and of course his dad) in the last film. Both times played by Keith Richards. Excited for Jack's uncle Paul McCartney in the 5th film, which I'm sorry to say but I doubt Ashleigh's going to realize/recognize either.
