Respect for this effort for this "small" topic. Using the NTG 3 myself and it's a truly the best pro budget shotgun mic with a nice linear sound reproduction.

Great video. I got the same results in my testing, however I like the mic below just out of frame better. Seems to get less room noise and if you have a fan in your key light, the mic picks it up waaay less than mounted above closer to the level of the key light.
awesome video i stumbled across this as i just purchased an ntg3 and wanted to binge some more videos on it before it arrives.i have actually been using shotguns and pencil mics pointing upward for a while i actually manage to get them out of frame as I have my camera mounted above my monitor pointing down for tutorial videos. I agree it reall does come down to how youve setup your space i have very light treatment and i found when i have hyper and supercardiod boomed above the rear picks up reflectionf rom the areas i havent treated and teh ceiling. also as you say having it below means your closer which further reduces reflections.
Oh woah I want expecting that difference. It sounds like the lower placement has more bottom end I also think in this day and age, most people don’t care if youtubers have a microphone in the shot
Yea, I feel like you’re totally right on both counts. It makes me second guess what I’ve been doing haha! Definitely a lot less room reflections when it’s close mic’d too.
To be honest, I don't remember what I was using on my dialogue. I believe the samples were unprocessed. Likely normalized to make sure the loudness was adequete for CZcams, but that's likely it. Normally I use 4 plugins, Mouth De-Click, EQ, Compression and De-Essing

When I listen to this, it sounds like more room noise from above, and less from below. I would bet its probably something to do with your couch cushions and rug
@randyrektor Good point! I have to say I like the tone of the mic lower better. My NTG3 is coming in the mail and I know I won't regret this decision lol
5:13, wait, when you place the microphone ABOVE you aiming DOWN, wouldn't that pick up LESS reverb from the ceiling and corner than aiming it up from below because the mic is facing away from the ceiling and corner? Not to mention you have more padding below the camera which means less coming from that direction.
Yes and no. So yes because it’s pointing down and not up into the untreated space, but super cardioid microphones also pick up sound from the butt of the microphone, so it may pick up reflections off the surfaces immediately behind the microphone. It can take some testing to see what actually works best in your space :p
Hi Randy, Love your videos man, these are truly great help! I have a quick question. I just baught Rode NTG-3 and I am not sure which audio interface I should buy. I came across RODECaster Pro II which sound really good but not sure if its over kill for my use case. To give you the context of my usage is that I am intended to record video cources in my home studio and possibly do live streaming. But I am not intended to do any music production etc.. so not sure if I should go with this seemingly high end Rode Caster pro 2 or choose something more simpler and cheap that do the job for my use case. Please share your thoughts and advice. Thanks in advance and and keep rocking great content man!
Hey thanks for the kind words! The Rodecaster has a lot of features that you just wouldn’t be using, so I think it MAY be overkill for your needs. For the same price or less, you could get an interface with 2 channels, and higher quality preamps. Preamp quality isn’t hugely important for your uses, but I’d rather spend the money on a nice interface over the features of the rodecaster. Something like the Apollo or Spark would be more than sufficient and some come with plugins for mixing as well!

Heyyy man, thanks so much for the kind words. So you'll need a way to supply the microphone with phantom power. Something like the Saramonic SR-PAX1 will do exactly that! So you'll go XLR from your mic to this, then from this to your camera with a 3.5mm cable. Hope this helps!
dude what are you talking about not hearing any difference. Idk if it was post-processing, but top boom you had far more nasal voice (I think it should've pointed a bit more towards your chest), and bottom boom sounder much deeper.

I prefer under slung but can’t deny that overhead sounds so good
I’ve always done over, but I could be easily swayed after trying both back to back. :p

May I ask, what is that you have attached to your c-stand? (just behind the NTG 3) I guess the purpose is for improved acoustics
That’s just a big scrim. It’s a silky piece of fabric that diffuses the light. If you shine a light through it, you get a nice soft lighting.
