  • The Ents and Dwarves both fought on the side of the Free Peoples against Sauron, but they also fought each other, and had ideological differences. Today we explore this conflict between these mighty beings! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    Having been a consumer of CZcams works on Tolkien’s legendarium for around two years now, the number of stories within the legandarium I have not heard about dwindles. However, the actual battle of the Ents and Dwarves is one such item. Thanks for covering this and for providing it with the appropriate context. I can always count on your channel to describe such matters with an eye towards how such an issue is possible, and the long term ramifications from, a conflict between two sets of free peoples/entities.

    "They come with fire. The come with axes!"
    Two beings you wouldn't think would fight but it makes sense afterwards. One cares for things that grow and the other for building and mining. Seems their makers set forth this conflict without intending too. Interesting tho that they both faded in their respective places and in a way returning to their own makers? 🪓 🌳

    You mentioned Beleriand (spelling?).
    I wish when the Ring was destroyed, those lost lands rose up from the ocean's depths, ready for plants and animals and peoples to move into to live.
    I think it would make for some interesting histories in the centuries following The War of the Ring.

    The thing is, whilst I understand her concerns, Yavanna was also unreasonable in them, for how did she expect the Children of Ilúvatar to eat and keep warm if they were to be prevented from chopping wood? The Ents purpose should have been the maintain balance between that need and the preservation of nature, not the sole protection of the woodlands of Middle Earth. On this I believe Tolkien got it wrong. Also, do we know if there were Ents in Valinor?

      War of wrath and many other things continued to ravage nature. And look at our world. The future of Arda marred timeline. Look at what we do to nature. She was right in telling Manwë she’s getting the short end of the stick. The ents were key in a lot. Both written and unwritten. Even Fangorn himself used to live in Doriath.

      I don't think the Ents were attacking anyone who used for the forests so long as it wasn't wanton destruction that could destroy forests. As far as Ents in Valinor go, I would think not as they, while long-lived, were still mortal as far as I know.

    You know, this is sorta a random thought, and I doubt this could or would ever happen, but I wonder what might occur if an Ent found Sauron’s Ring? What would he do with it? Would it corrupt him and what might a corrupted Ent look and behave like?

    • @Makkaru112
      @Makkaru112 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Created by Yavanna. Impervious. Same with Dwarves. The rings never worked on them thanks to Aulë creating their forefathers; so they were able to use them and not use them whenever it was needed.

      @@MenoftheWestthe inconsistencies Tolkien had a way to bring back into his works. There is one canon. It’s all one work and a progression of his growing internal thoughts within himself and his own life. Christopher to his death was uncovering his fathers work. Even to this day the estate is finding more stuff such as The Horde which explains more about what was going on in Doriath at its sacking.

    This is new to me but it makes sense in a way but either Tolkien didn’t know this but Aulie as as a smith would have known about combustible materials found in mines and you cannot forge steel without coal. Wood doesn’t get hot enough for it. So of course the Ents were pissed off. Huorns? Fight them hell no!!

    I don’t think Ents’ were opposed to any extraction of wood from their forests. After all, animais eat animals. It’s part of nature. Using resources from the wild is the same thing. I hardly believe that the elves could linger without chopping wood to make weapons, furniture, homes etc. What I believe is that Ents were angry at extensive, industrial harvesting of wood.

  • @gravestone4840
    @gravestone4840 Před 5 měsíci +1

    This could have been avoided if the Dwarves purposely mined for coal or natural gas which I'm sure they came across in their delvings and I'm also sure they were industrious enough to employ. Or hydro power from their mighty rivers and falls. They could possibly even make a deal with the Ents for the wood of the trees that had died not to burn as fuel but to carve lovingly in other crafts as memorial to the trees they were.
    Sadly it isn't that way it ended up even though mountains and forests go hand in hand along with all their inhabitants. Even more sadly, it's a lesson we haven't learned yet either.

      No, that was Sauron. The Brownlands used to be a beautiful garden-like land, until Sauron blasted it to prevent the armies of Gil-Galad and Elendil from making any use of it when they marched south to Mordor during the War of the Last Alliance.

    Men and Dwarves, because of their nature, would often come into conflict with the Ents. Both have inherited tales of haunted forests where people would lose their lives. The Ents, never many to begin with, were probably dismayed by the Men and Numenoreans clearing the forests for timber and to make room for dwellings. But Men of good will had one redeeming quality: They knew that they needed to replenish the forests to keep the supply of timber. So they did plant. For a time, until the growth of the hubris of Numenor.

  • @TexasTimeLord

    Men were a greater threat to trees with their homes and towns and ships made of wood. The Dwarves dwelt inside mountains and caves and used wood for things like handles and fires. Though they used coal more than wood for smelting ore
