The Galloway Hoard contains an unusual variety of materials and artefact types beyond the silver bullion so often found in Viking-age hoards. The find included heirlooms, ecclesiastical items (one of which names a previously unknown Northumbrian bishop), and the rare preservation of organic materials wrapping parcels and distinct groups. A three-year AHRC-funded project at National Museums Scotland, in partnership with the University of Glasgow, entitled Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard has been studying what this unusual assemblage can tell us about Viking-age Britain, Ireland and beyond.
