Juan, my son is a Fire Chief working air ops up north in Yreka with the Mountain Fire 🔥. Let’s pray that the crews in the fire near you and up north are safe. They are working in EXTREME conditions and need our prayers to return home safely. Thank you so much for your informative narration of what it takes to fight these fires 🔥

My heart goes out to your son and everyone else serving as firefighters or helping in other ways. I'm in New Zealand and as you no doubt know, every year we and Australia, the USA, and Canada move teams around between us to fight these massive fires. The camaraderie and support we feel from other countries is important. When people are lost in any of these countries we all feel it. Our teams also gain valuable experience to bring home and share with others. Our fires are smaller than yours so there is less opportunity here for the specialised skills training. Stay safe everyone.

Yep, I live in the MV area west of the fire. We have a 100ft clearing all around our hillside house but we have a pine farther down the mountain in distress that was right in our sight line. Rather than wait for it to die and then try to get it out of the terrain you spoke of, I opted to get some more water to it. Cutting a path (with a chainsaw) to the area was only about 120 feet but it took me over two hours to get through the Poison Oak vines, Saplings, Toyan and Manzanita to get a hose down there. Climbing back up with the chainsaw was no easy feat even with a then walk-able access. So far, the tree is holding on.

My son has a house in Lake Wildwood . I just don’t understand why our government can afford to send 50 Billion in unaccountable funds to another country . And yet,we can’t seem to be able to set up and have an national air force of a few hundred or more large fire retardant aircraft to attack and control these fires that can and have burn down whole towns and take many lives .
There are hundreds of used jets parked in our deserts that could be converted for this purpose.
These planes could fight fires on a national and international level.

When I was a college kid back in the old days we would sometimes go to that area to swim and be lazy. If you've never been there the American River Canyon is, like many of the west Sierra river canyons, taylor made for fire. Steep, heavy fuel, and like Juan said when the wind takes off the fire burns like running up a funnel. The point of origin, right next to a road, leads this old man to be suspicious as heck as to the cause.
Think of the Tanker Pilot, Abbie, and her mates trying to put those aircraft 150 ft off the deck over the fire to drop the retardant, and the level of respect and admiration for them is over the top. I hope all of us reading who watch Juan's' excellent reporting will hold a kind thought for, or if you are so motivated, say a prayer for these people and the ground firefighters they support as once again they do their dangerous work.

On the IR footage, they have some system overlying roads in real time as the camera is moving. In terrain like that, that must be a 3d topological model that is being moved to align with the camera, which is amazing. I hope that view of spotting and activity helps the crews on the ground and that they're able to stay safe in the extreme heat!

    • @charmandeross
      @charmandeross Před 2 lety +1

The FIRIS data is sent back to UCSD for post processing with a fancy computer. That generates geospatial data in a format that can be overlaid on maps easily, and predicts fire spread potential. Id assume at that point the road overlay is added in. Not super familiar with the technology, but it sure is cool.

    • @HiddenWindshield
      @HiddenWindshield Před 2 lety +2

@@jacksons_drones Yes, you can see that the roads jiggle slightly as the camera pans around. Also, it would be pretty unlikely for the fire to spell out "Michigan Bluff Road" in English text (5:46).

In my area, the official sources would not have any public displays like yours until maybe the next day briefings. Or, maybe it is just our local news outlets ignore available official information (like the "nearly real time" infrared mapping) in favor of human interest interviews with sobbing evacuees and looping footage of fire crews driving by. The KCRA weather folks stated that a dissipating thunderstorm created the wind event that drove the rapid growth of the fire last night. The heat is certainly a problem, but as you noted it's the winds that really drive these things. Hopefully CalFire can get this thing under control before the weekend, when it's possible the remnants of Hurricane Kay bring more wind and thunderstorm potential to the Sierras.

@@HVM_fi death and terrible things began in this world because of Adam’s sin…
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
We are responsible for all the terrible things that happen to us. If we had never sinned we would still be in paradise with God today but…
      Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
With a sin violation of the absolute law comes the absolute need for justice, condemnation and punishment…both temporal and eternal in hell.
God’s justice and righteousness demands such…he cannot violate his own law.
We continue to sin and he is forced to thus allow evil to happen to us for justice sake…
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Romans 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Romans 3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
Romans 3:14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
Romans 3:15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
Romans 3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
Romans 3:17 And the way of peace have they not known:
Romans 3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
But praise God he loved us so much that he was not willing to leave us without hope…
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
So bad things still happen but now through our savior Jesus Christ we have in his sacrifice a way to escape eternal death in hell and strength to endure the evils of this fallen world…
Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Acts 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Anyway, that is why evil things happen and that is why by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ we find both strength, hope and empathy enough to pray for and help others in their time of need.
      Amen.

I have been in my house all day, doing work on a friend's bass. When I helped him outside with it at about 7 p.m., I was pretty surprised at the degree of smoke! It smelled like the fire was very close. The sky was that eerie orange color that we know well in this area when smoke obscures the Sun. For a state that is overly regulated one would think there would be better forest management being practiced.

I'm over here in Cool and we've already had two canyon fires within the past two years. This terrain is no joke...CalFire is doing an amazing job and my love goes out to all the firemen and those who are affected by the fire. Hoping the fire doesn't travel west in the canyon.

Considering the long heat waves we've had this summer and this month's extreme temps, 115F just two days ago, we've been very lucky this is our first major fire in our area. I check CalFire website everyday and I've been impressed with the quick knockdowns the crews have made on the lesser fires that have popped up. In most cases, they fires have been held to under 100 acres. Let's hope the rains return early next month and not just dry lightning. 🤞

Where is there a safe place to live in Cali now? I think I'd put a houseboat with a tin roof on Lake Tahoe for my safety/vacation hut.

Honestly, we got lucky this year. So far, we managed to avoid monster fires like the ones that plagued us last year. And Reno managed to be smoke free until now. As of this writing, the smoke is at hazardous for all level in the Truckee Valley, forget the Tahoe Basin or the Carson Valley.
I'm curious to see how CalFire manages this one. Those river drainages are cliffs by any definition of the word that end in a narrow, water-covered, V-shaped valley. This is terrain that you could *never* build a railroad through

    It’s not threatening us.”
We heard that last year when the Dixie fire started.
But if you stand around and plan and plan while it gets bigger and don’t fight it because it’s, on forest service ground” or, now it’s Cal fire turf”.
It ends up in you back yard and then your home, town, and livelihood are gone….

I wonder if FS Road 23 was ever re-opened? It was closed because of washouts a couple years ago and it's the only access to the Ralston Ridge from the west. Otherwise one has to come in from Hell Hole or Ramsey Crossing to fight the fire on Ralston Ridge just south of Mosquito Ridge. Also, the USFS has just closed the entire TNF from the North Fork of the American to the Middle Fork until 12/31/22.
The smoke in the Auburn area is overwhelming. Where I live (between town and the river) the AQI was 750 this morning (I think it was only 500 in town). Got to love those down slope winds that follow the canyons at night; cough, cough. KAUN was IFR this morning 400' / 2 Miles.

@@geraldhugley3618 Yolo County found out the hard way... They closed Co. Rd 40 (low water bridge) after a CalTrans report said the load capacity of the bridge was zero. But instead of repairing it they left it closed until a number of fires in the area prevented any access without having to come in from the Lower Lake / Knoxville Rd. to the Blue Ridge area. Guess what, they replaced the bridge in a year and it should be opening any day now.
