I think this film is about children growing up. The garden is their world of thoughts which the adults not understand. Adults and older children expect that younger children change their behave. But there is some times not enough explanation why. So, some children try to keep it as it is.
I'm glad she danced her way to freedom away from that hideous garden.
The youngsters were great and the composition was good. I wanted to like it, but I didn't understand what was going on. Next Tuesday I'm sure I'll love another short from DUST!
I liked the visuals and the children. The plot seemed very flat.
Beautiful film! The main actress is great in ‘It’ and this short.
I absolutely agree.
She is Sophia lilis
A powerful assertion of the human spirit against control.
Cast were excellent, especially being so young - they really sell it. For some reason the world reminds me of the Russian movie "Stalker" by Tarkovsky (1979) ... it just feels, to me, like the outside is a place of fractured realities... dangers real and imagined. I loved the message.
The following might be considered a spoiler:
The world is not a safe place - yet must let our children navigate it. Just as children must ultimately reject the safe fortress and wisdom of their parents ... we see a childs rejection of transhumanism and an eternal, safe but necessarily 'lesser' life - in favour of the courage and danger demanded of childhood. Death may surely await those who cross over the threshold into the unknown - but, so does any chance of a meaningful life.
And this is a metaphor. As science slowly guides us towards safety and potentially eternal life... it steals something from us.
Here, we see the transhuman sanctuary as a safe yet joyless place, devoid of any true meaning or experience. The safe immortal and soulless inhabitants, yearn to see the joyful dance of life... a dance that only a naive and mortal child can perform. And so it is that they have come to live through her... they crave that which they have lost... they lock her up to protect her... just as an adult tries to protect their child from the harsh dangers of reality.
... but the dance of life cannot be performed behind safe walls, nor can it be danced without danger.
So, as all children must, and filled with youthful optimism and naivity, she rejects safety and dances across the threshold.
How many of us would reject safe transhuman immortality, for a meaningful life truly lived?
In it's title, the story also seems to hint at "the fall" ... man's exit from the garden of Eden. His drive to reject the safety of eternal yet sheltered life, in favour of the unknown and it's dangers. I do not know if this is deliberate, but the biblical mythology reflects quite nicely against this futuristic 'garden' of safety and immortality - lending it a deeper texture.
Whichever way you look at it, we see here a statement on the human condition. What it truly means to be alive.
Just my take, of course. The story is open to many interpretations... this is just the one I prefer.
Thank you very much for your interpretation! I am embarrassed to say that I was struggling with understanding this short. Your comment provided some keen insight, if not only some great ideas to get the mind rolling. Thank you! BTW you sound like a professor lol
Sophia is good in this & It. Can't wait to see her future in acting.
Music--and sound in general--were very well employed.
Private i I know I love the music but cannot find it anywhere except watching the film
Very affecting. The image of her walking off at the end. The music, the cinematography - amazing. Just ..wow.
Artistic sci-fi. Perfect. Very well done indeed.
The voice of the female that announces things in the background reminds me so much of the combine female announcer voice from Half-Life 2...it was always her calm voice and it usually started with "attention citizens..."
I liked the imagery, the makeup, the music. Not much of a story, but it gives you enough to make one up for yourself if you're feeling imaginative, which I think is part of the theme of the dance.
I was left wanting more. Lots of answered questions. But, it was enjoyable.
7:00 “Does it hurt?”
“Only when i dance”
I gotta quit reading the comments before I watch because really wtf do y’all know. I hate going into it with a cognitive bias. In DUST I trust, despite the vapid opinions of the armchair critics. Keep up with the rad narratives & I’ll keep watching em’.
Yes. Pithy criticism is too easy. Everyone seems to be in love with their opinions.
I have seen this before. I hope CZcams will remember and make me watch it 3 times. Good film but enough is enough CZcams.
I also saw it some time ago. Openly, it is our own fault for not remembering this cute little piece.
I thought that was powerful
There should be a part 2 when the kids run into each other as adults.
I watched this for Sophia lillis
Same
A masterpiece. Thank you!
👍
The title could have easily been... Billy Eliot In Dystopia.
Honestly, it will be great without cgi effect 4:50 ,but still good work at making this video
Is that the girl from the new IT movie?
Yup!
The acting is fairly well done but sure what I'm supposed to have felt . I'm glad she left , choose not to integrate but don't get why ?!? Left confused 😛
A strong, independent and intelligent young female character. Not sure why it does, but it seems to scare the pants off-of some people. Very good actors/actresses and excellent cinematography. Anyway I loved this short.
I found this film a bit to weird to follow. left me with more questions that cant be answered. there was no background to why any of this was going on.
That's the whole meaning of a short flim
To open of a story. Was typical of little planning.
Life has questions that can never be answered. But we must ask them even if we never get the answer.
@@rbear4574 Life is not a movie... maybe in your world it is...
who cares? it ws beautiful
Heartbreakingly beautiful piece
It was well-made, so I'll live it a "like" for that. But I didn't find the story itself to have much of a point to it.
Is that Harry Stiles in a tutu 😂
I thought... MAMBLA and a bunch of older guys vehemently applauding at the end of that weird dance off scene.
Some would rather lose than conform. The dance sequence was a little too long. The "eyes" are a cool detail. Trading humanity for longevity? If that is the question, well done.
I just found Dust on Roku. I tried a few weeks back and couldn't find it. I added to my Roku Tv. I'm so excited. I'll let you know how it goes, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a 5 ⭐💗 .... BTW, yes, so excited that I had to share with you now!!!
Thanks Char! Glad you found DUSTx - appreciate the 5 stars :)
The TV Roku channel is SLOWLLLLLLY getting more on it but it's still not as good as the CZcams channel. Not as much choice. I LOVE Dust --- I just cast it to my TV and watch for hours! I miss some of the shows but I just keep watching, and eventually, maybe .. I'll catch up! I'm sure not worried though .. SO much talent 'out there!' :-)
Clumsy but artful but had a hard time connecting
Reminded me of Zardoz's society of immortals.
incredibly well done
That is a little boy my friends...
Lol no that's Sophia Lillis from IT
This I found on Google about the context of this short film:
When humans become an obsolete concept in 2089, the rebellious Luc would rather die than integrate with the AI. But when he meets the Blue robot, the idea of getting better suddenly sounds tempting.
Welcome to the Garden. Inside you grow, outside you perish.
isnt this a condensed version of thx 1138 with a bit of 1984? have we reached the point where everything has been done?
It's a story of nonconformity, which is what THX-1138 is about as well. I think the similarities end there, however. This story is a little more surreal , almost fairytale-like. THX was more robotic; a reflection of how society has become robotic; that we've all become mere worker drones. That's not saying that I didn't like this short film, because I did. It was well done.
>> have we reached the point where everything has been done?
I really had a hard time caring about the characters, and it just seemed more a tired rehash of the "free spirit trying to break away from oppressive dystopia" trope than anything else, I'm afraid.
Excellent short film!
Wow, this is great!
Beautiful!! Well done!
The girl LUC is Sophia Lillis who played Beverly in the recent film "IT"
just beautiful! encore encore!
great acting
For all videos on your youtube Channel, Can you add subtitle plz !
I don't know what the Hell I just saw, but it was intriguing. I have sooooo many questions. First off, is the black kid a girl or a boy? Second, are these aliens? Third I LOVE the freaky eyes but why would people need to see down to the cellular level? And sooo many more questions......
The black kids a boy the dancing kids a girl. No they're not aliens just people integrated with artificial intelligence. The eyes are that way because physical optimization is part of the AI integration and as a result they have perfect vision.
Thanks
Sophia lilis
The film hinges on the main girl and she performs amazingly well. The trouble is it's too large a concept squashed into a 12 minute time frame and it doesn't work. Sometimes you have to hold onto or shelve a good project however close to your bib until you get the investment needed to make the film you envisioned. The potential for a longer movie in future using this idea as a dystopian world is great but for now 5/10
Beautiful! Wonderful sets and costumes; such GORGEOUS children
So what was that water(or) stuff the killed and made the blood float?
Bacha Bazi boy finds freedom at last
Very deep
Does anybody know the song used in the dance scene ???
the bleakness is over emphasized, still a thumbs up !
What is the song about
Please add subtitle also plz
That’s another one which should have been longer
Meh?
Honestly, this wasn't all that great. The story made no real sense, and borrowed heavily from the "free spirit leaves (oppressive?) place" storyline. Even with that, there wasn't much to go off of.
That boy dancing Valerie
One of the truly weirdest films I’ve ever watched. 🥴
I liked it!!!
Also 8:42 what uniform brand is that AND WHY AM I ASKING
They dance as elegant as a couple of bricks falling down a flight of stairs. Weirdly, that was the best part of the movie.
That little girl is Sophia Lillis. She's the girl in the newer version of IT. She's a very good actress, but this short film was meh..
I have to disagree
The sound needs to be worked on before uploading, I have to have sound on full
And if, like me, you have hearing problems the movie is even more banal.
Enjoyed it
well done 👍
On a scale of 1 to 7, where 1 is not at all boring and 7 is deathly boring
This film rates a 9
If AI is so great then why don’t those flunkies hook it up n go bazing
All of the people, including the Indian girl, were definitely altered in some way or another. I could clearly see that in their 'eyes' and in the way the lead adult spoke. They behaved much too eerily, much too stiff, as though the life was drained from them. I would surmise the lead girl's blood as being a possible catalyst in whatever special way for the Indian girl to attain freedom from the boundary she was placed inside of. Freedom is what most people want until inundated with propaganda and lulled to sleep with commonality and complacency or with whatever methods of extreme coercion to be used by the promising powers that be, whichever will work first and foremost. Communism/totalitarianism is the greatest example of this and yet people take history's screaming messages for granted. Yet another "millionth" reminder in the form of a sci fi short.
great acting a special effects, but they should have hired an actress with even a slight ballet background. leaving the door open for her escape didn’t make sense, either - nor did having perfect, immortal beings unable to run much faster or follow the short distance across the barrier
She took ballet lessons for 3 years so shhhh
why are u assuming she didn’t have a ballet background bc she actually did so….?
I didn't understand the ending
Nice
Some parts feel awkward and I didn't really get the ending, but the visuals are nice and the androgynous kids are cute. Don't understand why the ballerina wanted to run off and die tho, guess they just didn't like the idea of living forever? Which yeah, is a personal choice, but didn't feel like they made the kid's motivations clear enough.
Patchlamb honestly kids don’t have choice now. it’s not like they can refuse the vaccines we give them to avoid diseases. or choose not to go to school, at least not legally
Early though.
8:41 what is goin on
In the shots of her cleaned up, she looks very much lik Alyssa Milano...
Enough is Enough! Please!
So far the only one I haven't liked. It didn't gel for me and I didn't care about any of the cast.........It was missing something but I don't know what?
It's something we've seen 1001 times before.
A reason. Every villain needs a compelling backstory, including when that villain is a dystopian fortress.
The matrix
Are those two children a boy?
Ehhh, the dirty homeless girl and Jayden Smith.....the dancing montage made me cringe.....im sure it was meant to convey some deeper meaning but just came across as too contrived and awkward to me......don't get it.
I thought... MAMBLA and a bunch of older guys vehemently applauding at the end of that weird dance off scene.
I thought the dancer was a boy. He was called Luke. Unlike .billy Elliot, the dancer isn’t justified by having great talent, just a great heart (and a broken foot) and is, thus, beautiful. The filming of the dance conveyed that
what kind of movie it is!!!!!!
moynul hossain OST most likely
I don't get it?!?
I used to the montage to 👎🏼 and vomit.
Aside the culture jack, sweet short.
She is the girl who played Beverly in IT, isn't she?
Yes
I have no clue what is going on there, and little girl is not even close to be considered as a well trained ballet dancer on her age
It is but ok
Why girl look like that girl off of It movie 2017
Because that's the same girl! Sophia Lillis :)
@@thegardenshortfilm4873 oh shit!!! Aye ty😋
Uhh... this is great and all, but the point is...?
I dont get it.
I don't believe the child is 15 or 16. Looks 10
Which one??
she was like 13 in this so yeah?
The audio quality on this film was abysmal. I had my volume all the way up and couldn't hear much of anything. Luckily it was predictable enough that I knew the end by the second minute. The acting of the children was great. The adults were not.
.....What happened to the Obama voters....
Early squad
is this a bunch of boys dressing like girls? Humm!! I don't know man..what's going on here!!
The ballerina is a girl wtf
not sure what the heck this was about. it's hard to follow and not enough info was given.
Not well explained, inconsistent, strange. Girl, just take some boxes and use them as shoes. Nah.
This makes no sense
