    Interestingly I just ran into this scenario. My colony in need was dwindling fast so I didn’t feel like I had the time (or confidence) to go the donor tray route.
    FYI, my typical Queen supplier gave me a 2 week ship date, so I called the big company up north who told me they were weeks out on shipping queens. Coincidentally, I remembered Barnyard Bees and thought I’d give them a chance to disappointment me along with the others. To my great surprise, they not only had the queens but shipped both out the day of the call (received yesterday, 4/15). Everybody can produce a catalogue, service is a much more rare commodity. Your prompt service was/ is very much appreciated, and I’ll remember this when ordering other supplies.

    I had a colony with a failing queen. Took her out and today I did this very thing. Found a frame of day old eggs, nurse bees etc and put it in the queenless colony. Did not use smoke as I did not think of it but there did not seem to be any fighting going on. So fingers crossed they get to work on a new queen for that hive.

    What I usually do in this situation is after 5 days from putting that brood frame or doing a simple split, I eliminate capped queen cells and leave the open once (ex: frame added on Monday, opening hive on Friday). This way I make sure to have the best quality queen because it got so much royal gelly from day one. Also, I prefer to leave the big queen cells that are placed on the side and bottom of the frame.
    As I know, queens who received royal gelly on the 2nd or 3rd day in the larvae stage are always inferior to those who got it from the moment of hatching.

  • @HMallory1
    @HMallory1 Před 3 lety

    Dave you are right on time, I'm having to split my hives to keep them from swarming . I hate to do it because it gives me more hives than I want, and I hate to create a worker laying situation. Thanks

    • @mmb_MeAndMyBees
      @mmb_MeAndMyBees Před 3 lety +2

      Why don't you shake off bees, take the odd frame of capped brood. Freeze them. Put these frames, once thawed, back to the Colony as 'protein food'. The bees will clean up those capped cells, aka dead grubs, have a feast ! When the Queen can start to build up more (!) Just repeat frame take out / return system. Until splits are not needed... 😏
      For newbies, remember bees have a life of approx 6 weeks, in the Spring and Summer (not Queens !) So bees are capped and born on a regular basis, to maintain population need. 👍 But Colonies can get rather big quickly in this continuous process.... 🤨
      Lucky you to have so many bees.
      Why not sell those Splits ?
      Or donate some frames of bees to a new Beekeeper, to teach them Walk Away Splits and raise their own Queens? Local breed Queens are better than imported ones.
      We need more bees and beekeepers alike ! 🥰

    Fabulous video thanks David. Been watching all your videos. Very new to bee keeping, was given a wild hive that had been saved from a cut down hollow tree but they couldn't see the queen so don't know if there is one in there. The tree had been cut down a day or so before we could get them out so there was no brood but lots of honey. We are in the middle of winter here in Australia temps 45F overnight 61F during day have had them 7 days now so don't know if I should open them up to check> Please if you can offer any advice it would be very much appreciated.

    I was thinking of using this, OTS, method to start NUCs and build resource hives in my coconut and banana groves. If my fruit production is partially dependent on the number of pollinators present, I would think, always having active hives would be a plus. So, making nucs frequently would be a good thing?

    As a new beekeeper this shows how to use a supercedure cell that up to this point was a mystery.
    Noticed these bees were totally inactive, is this a sign to watch for when checking hives and are there other signs to watch for?

  • @aarongriffin81
    @aarongriffin81 Před 3 lety +1

    When adding a frame with all stages of eggs/larva, the new queen CAN emerge 10 days later. I have had a queen emerge 9 days after adding the frame of larva. They skip the first 6 days(3 days an egg + 3 days a larva). 16 days total for queens. Once in my experience, they must have used a 4 day larva or the queen developed faster. After the virgin emerges, she may be mated as early as 7 days later but most often about 12 days after emerging.

    Yes, martins may eat a few bees but their main food source is dragon flies. We had martins for years and soon found out that most of what they feed on and feed to their young is dragon flies. It's amazing how many they eat. And big horseflies. We had horses and every year when the martins were there we seldom saw a horsefly or a dragon fly until after they left.
