I had a T480 issued to me at work that I used every day 12 hours a day for several years that made me fall in love with ThinkPads. I’d probably still be using it but I moved to a new position where I do a lot of database management, editing of large excel documents, and AutoCAD work so I got an upgrade to a Gen 4 ThinkPad P1
Hello Devin, I have two options t480 and Msi gv62 gaming laptop, both at same price, I will need atleast 4 hr of battery. I have very less knowledge of computers, can you please help me choose
@@yugal-pz8nq then Thinkpad T495 is the right choice for you, it got decent Vega 8 graphics and quite fast Ryzen 5 (or 7) Pro processor, efficient battery life and built like a tank
Just the video I was looking for. To the point and helpful. Thanks man.
I couldn't decide so I bought both version, the classic T480 and the T480s... I upgraded the T480 with 2x16Gb and a 2Tb nvme SSD, and the T480s with a 16Gb on the single ram slot to have 8+16Gb, and a 1 Tb nvme SSD. They are the best laptops I ever had
So the T480s is best than T480 ?
@@salimsoltan2465 I still can't decide which is best, T480 is full dual chanel on the totality of the memory and has 2 batteries but the SSD will only goes upto 1700Mbps whereas the T480s SSD will be twice as fast and the cover is more premium (metal, when the T480 is plastic)
@@bonzaibush4391 so t480s is definitely better
@@mohamedaminerai7132 I think so but it bother me having 24 or 40 Gb of ram and not 32 or 64

I have the T470, and I love it. I prefer this laptop over my ThinkPad E15 Gen 3. And it cost me only $80. Got it from a Pawn Shop and replaced the Thermal paste. I did order 2 batteries seeing how the batteries on here are trashed. But other than that, it is a great device.
i got this laptop for my dad actually! specifically the model with a i5 vpro cpu and 16 gigs ram. it cost me $230 without storage from ebay and i had to add a 512 gig nvme drive for $40, bringing totals up to $270. from my experience the non-s model (t480) tends to have better specs for cheaper (the one i use for linux came with QHD, i7 vpro, 16/256 gigs included and an mx150 for just $215), but a non-enthusiast will probably take the thin-and-light factor any day over this negligible spec bump. the half-soldered ram is a little worrisome for me (still mad about letting myself get a laptop with 8 gigs soldered ram a few years back), but at least it's still somewhat upgradable and it's hard to argue with the price.
I see a thinkpad, i instantly hit that like button
What a tool
You are a true man Of culture🔥
Yes. Same comment on my mind
W man🎉🎉
The video is timely information in that I'm shopping for a replacement or mate for my T450s. The T480s can be had for less than $200 USD w/shipping and there's no shortage of them.. Upgrading is straight forward and not a complex process for most techies. I was not aware of the power supply variations.
I'm still using an X1 Carbon Gen 3 from 2015 and it's holding on well! The thickness being similar to a Macbook Air is madness! Don't like the soldered 8GB RAM though. I'm thinking of upgrading to a T480S soon once my budget frees up. Long live the Thinkpads!
Thinkpads are the best on all aspects, only complaint is that they should revive the old keyboard back. There's so many functions and features missing on the new ones for the sake of modernity and simplicity.
Yeah bring back 3 inch thick thinkpads!
In your video you said you can add up to an additional 16Gb module - officially, yes that's correct. But the T480s unofficially supports 32Gb modules - so you can actually go to 8Gb soldered + 32Gb for a total of 40Gb. I used Kingston FuryX modules to do this personally with the T480s and X270 FYI.
Good to know. Thank you for the info!
Is this better or worse than dual channel 8?
Unofficially?
A symmetrical dual channel configuration (8 soldered+8 on a module) is technically faster than an asymmetric configuration. Unofficial means that Lenovo don't support 32gb DIMMs, but they do work nonetheless for 40gb maximum.
@@nathmorris1if you do 8gb + 16-32gb, 8gb of the additional ram will run in dual channel with the soldered 8gb, the rest will run in single channel
I just bought a T470 myself for the upgradability and portability. It has a 256 GB SSD but when i'm able I'm looking at a NVMe drive
Good review. I bought a T430s a while back. Didn’t even know they existed before that. Now that I have been introduced to this series, I’ll eventually get the T480s or so. That’s why I watched your video. Which was 👍

The T420 is a nice 80$ deal from eBay that I have bought since I was in Australia, still nice and do good things for me even I have the Thinkbook 16p gen 2 as my daily device
T420 is not worth $80. Batteries are non existent, bad screen, heavy and thick. No SSD by default ... very good condition one maybe $50

Ryan that was an Excellent Review, a Question does the laptop come with a shallow keypad and uf so can an older style keypad be fitted like the Classic type Keypad? my sincere Thanks and your Shirt Rocks,,Peter Ireland
Nice review. Thanks question please. 1. Is the brightness & sharpness good on this 1080p touch display? 2. can we disable the touchscreen to improve battery life? Will disbaling touchsreen improve battery life? Thanks
I bought an X250 for my wife 4 years ago but the plastic build quality eventually failed her. The RAM and screen connections kept getting loose from the flex. Other than that, it was a hell of a machine, I've upgraded the screen to full HD, changed the charging port from barrel to usb C, and HDD to SSD. I'm looking at this model for her replacement as this has metal build.
"plastic build quality failed" ; connections from RAM and screen kept loosing? May I ask HOW you used that laptop (or for what purpose)

Have been using T460s after selling my 2017 MBP 13inch. It is brilliant so far.
Dumb question. I am looking for an LCD cable from a T480s for the IPS display (30 pin). Anyone got one or know of a similar laptop whose LCD cable would also work?
still going strong with my t450 + extended bulky primary battery
and probably gonna go all out for a better and brand new thinkpad , the keyboard+ the signature right and left button on the mousepad is super useful
first time using it and immediately fell in love with the keyboard
what gnu/linux do you use on your thinkpads? what do you recommend for my t480? on my desktop I use opensuse tumbleweed with gnome
got a t470s for 200 euros in germany. Runs on ubuntu 22.10 and it works really well. Just a really good quality product for the average joe. I dont think you can beat it used
Just bought one for 165. I5 with 24gb ram. Found an i7 version but the seller never responded. I saw it as a recommendation and needed something "new". I'm excited to clean it up and upgrade the storage and battery
Recently got a ex-office T480.
Decent upgrade over my previous laptop and it's something I can use to play old steam games in my library.
But games wasn't the main priority. A functional laptop that can hold a charge, was the goal.
So I'm very proud of myself for finally getting a thinkpad and paying for it on my own.
1080p Ips screen would have been nice or even 1600 x 900 (if it was available).
But my previous laptop also had 1366 x 768 screen and I was satisfied by it. So with a 14" screen compared to 15.6" it looks better.
Yes I upgrade would be nice...but the cost and possible e-waste generated due to not being able to sell the screen to someone.
What linux distro are you running?

Got one with an i5-8350u coming in 2 weeks.
I was a bit worried about the processor, but I played with a friend's laptop who had a i5 7th generation U processor and it was pretty zippy. And that was on a regular old hard drive
The processor design is to allow long battery life so you can leave your charger at home. Ultrabooks aren’t for you if you need raw processing power but I love my HP mobile workstation. The Intel Core i7 dual core processor 5500u is responsive and fast.
Try undervolting it a bit with [the right version of] Intel Xtreme Tuner or Throttlestop.
Based on personal experience the maxed out x270 is the best option although you can’t get brand new deals these days. Tested vs MBP m2 and latest Lenovo variants
Do you think i might be able to run some low end games for example Minecraft or Roblox?
ULV dual core i5 and i7 are the classic ultrabook. They’re not quad core but for what people need them to do, for daily tasks, photo editing, light video editing and light gaming, they work. That’s why they’re more ubiquitous than quad core and gaming laptops.
8th gen i5 and i7 ARE 4 core/8 thread CPUs, and are performing very well. This is a Kaby R revision,
Anyone know where I can buy the t480s backlight keyboard? Lenovo site don't have it. Also I never had any issues using windows 11 Pro. What i did is a clean install of win 11 Pro. I didn't upgrade from previous win 10 Pro.
EBay
I have a T480 standard, on which I use VoidLinux with musl and dabble with HardenedBSD. It's got the lowest power consumption of any laptop I have. The trackpad is terrifying coming from a Fujitsu Q702. I use the trackpoint buttons in conjunction with it. I intend to BIOS unlock it, then install a cell modem, and of all things, replace my main cellphone with it because I hate Android actually.
How does it run if I play Halo CE or CoD MW4 2007?
any used thinkpad that has had some upgrading done to it beats out any budget new gaming laptop (especially in ram-intensive operation)
My config - best for mobile and VM env. T480s i7, 40GB ram, NVM Samsung Pro 980 2TB, second NVM on WWAN poro WD 512GB . Best laptop ever
I was using such config for some time in the past and it was great experience. But when I got the chance to upgrade I jumped the wagon, my friend got my T480s and I got T14 AMD. And I'm very happy with it, but I still have a lot of sentiment for that 480s.
Where do i get the wallpaper ?
I have one of these (I've owned the T420s and T450s) as you say it is an excellent laptop. Bought from eBay for £660 2.5 years ago. If I am being picky I could add secondary SSD to the T420s and T450s but I've not found a definitive video showing how this is done with the T480s. There is one video on YT however it isn't that accurate.
reddit should have info, I believe you can put a 2242 m.2 NVME SSD in the WWAN slot on many thinkpads of this era, including this one
it’s a nice laptop but i hate how the palm rest and the keyboard’s finish rubs off and it looks so greasy even though it’s not. if i try using methods online to get rid of it like a magic eraser and other stuff, it all leads to no avail.
Great machine, have this one for coding, absolutely love keyboard and weight. If you are going to upgrade trackpad, try going with a glass one, heard it is possible
I’m a cybersecurity student studying SOC Analysis. Do you think this machine would be good enough for my studies?
@@SOCyak Yeah, it is good enough in terms of value per price. The only complaint is screen brightness (250 nit), but it is not a problem if you use it indoors + the screen is upgradable. As long as you won't do any hard CPU tasks or gaming (which you probably won't as SOC analyst), this machine is perfect. I also recommend upgrading to minimum of 16Gb RAM.
i have an oppurtunity to get one for 180us should i do it
Question, would this be good for music programs like cakewalk or audacity and video editing programs like videopad
for 1080p editing, it would be okay
Would it be good enough for android Emulation?
Nice video 👍🏻, where do I get the wallpaper?
Bought one in pretty much new condition for $150 USD. The guy had it docked the entire time so theres no scratches anything, no wear on trackpad... I did upgrade the screen immediately because it was just SO poor. Spent $100 usd doing that lol. But goddamn I love it so much.
i got the top spec t480s wit 1 tb ssd and 24 gb ram , i7-8650U and i love it so much . its lightning quick . i bought it for $175 one of the best purchases i ever made build quality & battery life is amazing !
Hi how's your experience? Did you also play games like valorant how's the performance
My main problem with the t480s, is it's battery life.
And especially because one would have to buy this used, the battery life is gonna be worse.
It's why I went with the non S version, because I could just replace the external battery. But you do feel the added weight.
Very viable reason to go with the non S for sure
i have the t480s but i feel that its really slow laptop, the hardware is amazing, but even simple tasks like watch youtube videos are slow, maybe is a drivers problem
Didnt expect the faze jersey ngl
Thinkpad T480s is best than T480 ?
Can you share your wallpaper?
What do you think about L480? I bought one now with i5 8250u, 8gb ram, fhd screen for 140€. Is it much worse than t480? :)
That L series are just a step lower than T series. They are maybe less premium in terms of finish, weight and so on but are priced lower and many times packs better value for the money. Sometimes even you can upgrade one further than T series (which tends to be lighter so less ports and space inside), the L and probably E series can accommodate i.e. 2nd internal drive using SATA. Of course it depends on the generation, 480 was the last great Thinkpads. Although T14 is not bad either, soldered ram is a bit pita but I put 32GB into mine and it's 48GB RAM now. And there are days where I see 80-90% of memory used! :) Photo/video editing soft, many tabs in browser, virtualisation, even file explorer eats a lot of ram during opening a folders with photos on my mobile and on SSD and sorting that, please mind we are talking ~15000 files :)
Hi, great review. consider using this machine. can we play Football Manager in this thing?
If you want to play intensive games, get a quad core or gaming laptop. You can push the dual core cpu to the limit but you won’t find it as good as you would with a more powerful laptop. Light games should be good to go.
Thanks, mate.
I came here for the laptop but wow nice jersey its like just so cool
I got a ThinkPad X270, for ₹22500/-. 16 RAM/512 SSD.
I run Ubuntu 22.04 on it. Works flawlessly.
You could run vmware alongside windows and have ubun
You could have vmware workstation on windows 10 with a couple of ubuntu virtual machines or get virtualbox on the go because it allows you to keep a backup of vm if u manage to break one of your ubuntu ones ul always be backed up. I so ethical hacking so these x270 laptops are perfect for that. Run windows and then get vms on the go mate. It dosent even eat any resources up apart from disk space. If your models a 8gb ul be alright like.

How did the new display work out?
That’s why schools love this machine
The T480 honestly I think is the better of the 2 if you want to get best bang for your buck by buying a cheap used one and add 64GB of ram and you have two SSD slots to fill up. The screen can be upgraded to 4k as well, wifi can be upgraded to wifi6E. The T480s is sexier because it's thinner but that's about it. I think you can upgrade the wifi card and add more storage but the one thing that impacts performance the most, you cant upgrade which is the ram. You really cant take a t480s far from its original performance. In either case I'm sure the t480s is still nice but the T480 is the one you want if you like to tinker.

Sure the laptop may be upgradable but no aftermarket speaker upgrades exist. Display is also pretty bad. I got the 1080p version. I can’t imagine any one in their right mind would be happy paying this at full price at $1300.
