I remember times in elementary and high school, where a teacher would ask me a question to which I know the answer, but I would keep silent and pretend I didn't know the answer for fear of stuttering and embarrassing myself in front of classmates. Happened like hundreds of times.

I also stutter, but i think mine is genetic because my grandma and my brother also stutter. In public, i either get really enthousiastic or nervous but both result in my throat feeling tense and almost like I can't breathe. But It's nice knowing there are others like me. Love the video

    • @glenpeladeau
      @glenpeladeau Před 6 lety +4

Do not give up though, do not just chalk it up to genetics and say there is nothing you can do about it. There is! First thing is acceptance, love yourself for who you are, realize that, no matter how far you get in improving yourself. Then seek help, practice meditation and relaxation techniques. Learning Tai-Chi will do both of these for you. A speech pathologist can help tremendously. One of this that you might want to look at is nutrition, make sure you are getting enough vitamins and I cannot stress enough how important vitamin D is. Be sure to talk to you doctor about this :)

I stutter as well. Like you when I talk slowly and I'm relaxed I also don't stutter hardly at all. It's crazy how back and forth our stuttering goes depending on many things. I also had a very hard time making friends because I was so afraid what they would think of my stutter. I have also felt very lonely because of this, like no one understood what it was like. The anxiety, depression and loneliness are only a few things I dealt with. And still deal with at times. This is a great video thank you :)

Granted, we're not severe stutterers but that's of no consolation when you're a kid. I can totally relate. Before speaking, the anxiety of stuttering takes over and ruins everything. It’s so embarrassing and you feel like you are different from others. I had a similar experience in school, where I had to read the News in front of the entire school, before the start of the day and I just lost it. Stuttering can really hamper your self esteem and can bring you to real lows in life. Thank You so much for this video. It really helps. Calming yourself is so important which you explained very well. Thank You and God Bless your beautiful soul always❤️

Everything u said I can totally relate besides I haven't had the courage like u to face the problem head on. When I know there will be any kind of social event I have to attend, rather it be with family or strangers, I turn to alcohol cause when I'm tipsy I don't studder. I don't want to live my life like that anymore! I'm going to take your advice & seek help from a speech therapist. I've allowed my studder to hold me back from so many great opportunities. Hello, fellow stutterers, a brother from Russia here.
Here’s some latest insights of mine on our predicament:
      1) Stuttering is not a physical defect, cause I’m able to speak fluently when I’m sure no one can hear me. From a meditation course I’ve learned a concept of "thinking without knowing that you’re thinking". That’s what happens to me when I stutter: it’s a thought that causes stuttering. It maybe so embedded in me that I no longer recognise it for what it is, but ultimately a thought can be detached from - which is literally the point of meditation. Check out the Waking Up app - mindfulness meditation does do something to stuttering. The positive effect is certainly there, but it’s slow and takes a lot of practice, which brings me to the next point
      2) Check out the Joe Rogan experience #1035, 35:40. The guy tells a story of curing his stuttering via psilocybin trip, i.e. magic mushrooms. I’m getting some as soon as I’ve got the cash (f*ck that Germany vs. Macedonia World Cup-22 qualifiers game man) and will be back with an update asap
      3) Curious enough, Sam Harris’ (the guy behind Waking Up) experience with psychedelics (type "Sam’s mushroom trip" here on YT) further corresponds with the theory that stuttering is but a symptom of a bigger problem, the one I may not even recognise cause it’s so embedded in my mind that I don’t see the wood for the trees. Whatever that psychological crap is, a good mushroom trip might well solve it

I always used to be such a happy child who talked a lot and had many friends but ever since i got this stutter my life has been negative and depressing. just the ability to not being able to say what i want to say is fcking irritating and making me feel powerless. and also knowing that a cure is not out there in the world makes it even more depressing. many people think stuttering is just that you cant say a certain word and thats it.. but thats so wrong.. the side effects are present and horrible. btw, tea you are stunning.

very brave of you to talk about your stuttering, as you already know I
stutter as well. at age 21 I also had worked in a fast food restaurant in the drive through and can definitely relate the experience, Im 27 now and work as a foreman for an industrial construction framing company so you can imagine how many people I have to work with, meetings, inspectors, dealing with engineers and employees, what helps me is to put my emotions aside and learn to get things done rather than being scared. just going to through this out my last relationship also ended because she told me I was boring and quiet but had previously mentioned that I stutter, but the truth was that she was cheating on me few months before and told me I was not talkative and serious. yes it was hurtful but also got a sense what I needed to improve. my stuttering has gotten in the way of everything is not severe until they ask me for my name then I freeze just like you did and say another name that's easier to pronounce lol. but in the midst of everything I came to realize that I can't please everyone and if they look at me with an odd face I directly tell me that I stutter and not let it bother them. some techniques I used is raising my voice, my father used to stutter but somehow he overcame it in his adult life, he literally yells at me when I speak in the phone lol. another one is I started practicing bioenergetics from Elliot Hulse and that has helped me to reveal and put my voice out there. thank you once again remember your not alone my stuttering lads, stay positive and be loud out there.

When you said "breathe" I knew that would be very important. My husband, who has stuttered his whole life, sent your video to me. I had just told him to breathe yesterday when he was stuttering profusely, so I feel vindicated by what you said. He gets very impatient when I speak, yet I am not a stutterer. It is very frustrating because I have been very patient as he tries to say things, but I am not treated with patience. Thank you for your great video. It is obvious, you have touched a lot of people with your insight and help from your speech therapist.

I’m 27 years old and I’ve lived with a stutter my entire life. The experiences you touched on, being unable to utter out a word in a moment of high anxiety, being afraid to read out load in class, feeling sad because you can’t talk like everyone else, and the depression that comes along with that. It really hit home for me. I can relate to all that. Sadly I let my stutter rob me of a social life in my early twenties. I didn’t really go out much and I was terrified of approaching a women. But most of all, I felt alone. I never knew anyone personally who also stutters. I had nobody who really understands what stuttering is like or what I go through. I don’t know why it took me until now to look up stuttering videos on CZcams but I did and I found your video. Along with that I found others like me in this comments section. Hey!!! I just want you to know that I was almost in tears watching this video. Me and you are so alike its crazy. I am a former Athlete and College graduate. I have been stuttering since a very young age. I would say it is moderate to severe, and it is very frustrating. I am very quiet and too myself because of it. Its very encouraging seeing other people that struggle with the same thing. Thank you for this video.. If you have any other social media let me know. I would really like to keep in touch we can help each other. God Bless

Thank you for sharing this. The obvious take away from your video is that you have more to offer than us “east talkers.” Keep in mind that some of the best orators in history had to overcome speech difficulties. (Best singers too) But the overall attractiveness you exude, with your amazing smile and hypnotic eyes only accentuate your inner strength to put yourself out there. Kudos young lady. The world is a richer place with you in it!

You are VERY brave, and you should feel extremely proud of yourself. I'm proud of you and I don't even know you!
As someone you has lived with stuttering for 66 years now, I can easily relate to everything you've said.
As a young boy my stutter was so bad I could barely speak at all and suffered all the awful negatives you yourself expressed. However, in my teenage years I resolved not to let this get the better of me and I grew in confidence and learned to surmount the main difficulties.
Now, for the past 40 or so years, I cam more or less talk normally (save for a few words, which people like us tend to become experts in skirting around) and even teach in front of classes of multiple students
Thank you for this wonderful video. I also plan to check out your other videos. A BIG well done to you!!
    Take care x

Thank you so much for your video. I had a stutter since I was 4. It was so tough to go through the mixed feeling of embarrassed , shamed and self-blamed etc.I did the same things as you mentioned. I worked on my self-esteem, breath and rythme of speaking by sports, yoga and reading psychological books. It gets so much better. Ps, I am a language teacher.when I had a stutter I just told my students I have this trouble some time. Actually this helps me to relax and continue our conversation:)

Thank you so much. These past few years have been hell inside my brain because of my stutter. During this video I started crying because I know the feeling that you felt at the drive-thru. Sometimes when the phone rings, I just can't answer it because so many times when I go to say "hello" I can't get the word out at all and it feels like I can't breathe. I get terrified to do things that normal people would find really simple. I have struggled so much in school as well with trying to talk to others and introducing myself because saying my first name is the worst thing for me. When people make fun of me it hurts me so much that it keeps me up at night because I know have to live like this for the rest of my life. But I really don't. The stutter will be there, but the fear doesn't have to be. This video helped me a lot and I want you to know that you have really made an impact on my life, so thank you so much for that. I hope I can get better. The mental side effects are too much sometimes. But I know I'm not alone in this struggle and I don't have to feel like this anymore.

this has got to be one of the first stuttering video's I've seen with someone who has had a stutter since birth because I thought I was the only one tbh! I completely relate to EVERYTHING you stated In this video. Up until 11 years old my stutter began to get worse and worse each day until I was starting high school at around 12 years old. My mum decided to go back to the doctors to see if they'll be able to refer me back into speech therapy for a sort of support group. I can tell you right now as 14 years old that the stereotype of speech therapy working is VERY rare. It just really depends. You know what the worse thing is, when someone tries to 'help' you by saying "oh it's okay, I stutter too when I'm nervous". Like please, I know where your coming from in 'trying to help me' but ironically that's not helping me!! ugh

Hi from Quebec :) it's a very good video. I have stutter for many years and now it's somewhat under control. But some days it's really hard. I found out with time that it's really connected with my emotions and my sleep. If I do not sleep well, the problem gets worst. If I anticipate I will stutter, then I will. Like, for instance, if I am in a crowded and noisy environment (restaurant) then the probability of stuttering triple. One day, I decided to go to Toastmasters to fight my fears and I stopped stuttering as my level of self confidence increased a lot. Recently the problem came back again and I am searching solutions. Your video helped me a lot to feel less lonely. One thing I tell you, stay strong and positive, we all have a treasure inside us. I think people who stutter need to talk without being judged. Let me know if you (or anybody here) want to practice over the phone / hangout. Good luck! :)

Hi Téa. We did reading out loud in a circle in English class. I would always count the sentences to see which was the sentence I had to read. I'd repeat it in my head over and over again for the entire time and usually managed to blurt it out when it was my turn... We did this all the time. The worst. Not as bad as having to read your essay though. When my teacher scanned the room for someone to call on to read their homework I'd usually hide under my desk... What helps me today is stuttering more openly....
I think it's extremely courageous of you to post a video like that. Thanks so much for that.

Hi Téa, great video and advice. I've stammered since i was around 8 or 9 and have been trying to help people learn to live with their stammer for a while. Personally I think another idea which is helpful is having a sense of humour about it. I've learned through performing as a magician as a job for around 6 years, that making a joke about it eases the person and kills my anxiety. Some people who stammer can't seem to understand how this will help because they understandably get very frustrated with themselves. However people who don't stammer seem to love this and appreciate what you're saying a lot more , making it easier to speak to them. What's do you think?
    Keep up the good work

I had a rough youth, clouded with worries because of my severe stutter, but just take it one day at a time. Just breathe and don't ponder over embarrassing moments and situations, let them go the minute after they happen. Just keep moving forward, and don't look back. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and emotions with us, Téa. To talk is to open ourselves up to everyone and that is scary. I can hear your strength in your speech. I took speech therapy when I was young (7-8) and the therapist focused on eradicating the stutter. It didn't work.
I started sessions with a therapist this year in another country and 23 years later. The focus was not on getting rid of the stutter but becoming one with it and accepting it as a part of who I am. Now this won't help with acting - and I too hate my stutter - but it it teaching me not to be scared of it. My stutter consists mainly of silent blocks (which, I'm told, are not stutters) because I have become so afraid of stuttering that I actually increase disfluency. I imagine stuttering, an extension or a repetition, and the tense feeling in my throat and chest would disappear. Have you ever looked into this? (this is the first video I'm watching)

I'm learning Italian and I stammer in both English and italian. I dont like the anticipation of waiting for my turn to read. Also on italki when I'm with my teacher who is very patient it can be so hard to speak and I end up wasting half the lesson I paid for because of my stammer.
But one thing I have noticed is that you are enough eventhough you have a stammer. My friends all know I stammer and even when I breathe sometimes it catches onto another episode. I love yoga and dance too and it helps your right. If people dont have patience and openness to know me and accept me then I dont want to try to give my light and energy to them.

My only outlet was singing and playing the guitar professionally for many years. Wow... So, I'm a little over the 7 minute mark in your video and I had to pause to comment on just how much I relate to this. All of my life I've never met another person who stutters, so I've always felt very isolated. I suffered a lot from depression, anxiety, and constant self doubt for the vast majority of my life.... to the point that I've even felt like I was mentally lagging. I'm now 19 going on 20 and it is only within this past year that my self esteem has REALLY heightened, even despite my stutter.... which has gotten better to some degree. There was a situation I recall clearly where my grandmother had put me on the phone with customer service completely out of the blue when I had only recently woken up and I had no clue really what the problem was.... I was so nervous and tense when I answered the phone, I kept stuttering over every word... pausing, stopping and starting over...then the person on the other end would ask me the same question over and over and I'd just sit there with my mouth agape, trying to get just the 1st word out.
Another situation where I was trying to get a word out and the person on the other end supposed I took too long and blatantly hung up on me...twice.
I still open all of my conversations with "Sorry, I stutter"...but I have my best friend to thank for me being able to gather the confidence to even open a conversation at all.
Thanks for this video... I don't feel so alone anymore.

I’ve stuttered all my life, and was very embarrassed by it as a child, and only annoyed when it pops up as an adult (45 atm). What I noticed early on was that I could recite memorized dialog clearly with practice, and got into the habit of preparing my responses before I spoke. This means that I speak with a slower, more deliberate cadence just like you do in the video. The only time as an adult that my stutter became an issue was after I left the armed forces, it took years to restore my calm to the point that I could get through a sentence clearly. These days no one notices even when I do stutter, because it doesn’t sideline my train of thought. You go, girl! Keep being you.

Cool video! I do not have a conventional stutter, but I have allot of sentence breaks, restarts, and sometimes uncontrollably replace words or phrases with something unintentional if I become extremely anxious when speaking. I've become much more aware of it when speaking to professionals in my field after graduating college. It gets better when you hit adulthood, but it is still a nervous disorder for me and is increased by anxiety. It's an ever going work in progress, and I hope everyone who deals with stuttering an speech impediments are able to find their confidence and relax. Good advice in general! :) I survived some meetings by just trying to breath and relax.

Great video. I stutter too. It's crazy how people who stutter can tell if someone else stutters. Within the first minute of the video I could tell you were trying not to stutter. You did a great job though. Everything you mentioned has happened to me multiple times throughout my life. I'm 25 now and stutter occasionally. What helped me was reading out loud at nights so I could loosen up my throat muscles. This way my mouth and throat wouldn't tighten up as much when I speak. Also, it seems like anxiety causes my stuttering due to it tensing up my speaking mechanisms. One way that I've overcome anxiety is to become overly confident in myself as a person (through secondary education, money, working out at the gym, and increasing my social status). That way normal interactions with people won't intimidate me and create such anxiety.
Overall, I admire your determination to overcome stuttering.

I know deep inside of how suffering it is especially when you had it since you were born, i was born with it. Don't worry about it you can't stutter forever, like it can't rain forever. Don;t give in and don't settle for anything. God bless.

I stutter too. And I just took an instructor job in college. I usually walk inside the class to help me overcome stuttering. Bottom line is that I don’t let stuttering interfere with things I want to accomplish. And yes, I also have a lot of friends and I could say they’ve accepted what I am. Good video.

Just like many of "us" out there, I also felt the need to comment as I relate to nearly everything that happened to you. I've never been a shy kid but stuttering sort of forced me into that role. The more I stuttered the more I automatically steered clear from social interaction.
Just like most of you, I also don't stutter when I'm alone, when I talk in unison with a group and when I talk to the few very very close friends. This made me think too that the stutter arises when we're exposed to situations in which a lot of attention is given to our very voice and speech, especially in contexts we can't predict. Some of these contexts are precisely what you mentioned: talking on the phone (attention given entirely to the speech, worse if with strangers), doing bureaucratic paper work, voicing requests and complaints ecc. Just like you, one of my most humiliating experience was during a training in my former workplace. The team leader asked the group to read out loud a paragraph each of a text displayed. When my turn came my palms began to sweat and my heartbeat accelerated. I started out fine then blockages began until I couldn't utter a single word anymore without stuttering. I had to say to the group, my head muscles throbbing with tension, "sorry I can't".
I think the trouble with this, just like in your French class, is that the entire attention is given to your speech, not even to the linguistic content (everyone has the text before their eyes, so if they bother to listen to you it is only for HOW you read - your speech).
An interesting question would be: do you all stutter when speaking a foreign language? I noticed my stuttering is very minimal when I speak English, even if I speak it in the same tempo as my native language. Would be interesting to know whether it is a constant.

I feel like girls won't be judged as much as guys for stuttering. I am a guy that stutters and I feel like I am felt different about when I stutter. Having blocks like you have explained is just as frustrating as being judged. You are so strong to maintain a positive attitude throughout this video and I hope I can be like you someday.

As a stutter, I'd like to say that is quite sad to see a person like this girl worrying to badly because of this "issue". When I see another person stuttering, even to me, it seems very easy to relax and calm down, and keep going, but when you're under that skin, trust me, is not that easy. I'll try to breath and relax as much as possible in order to speak well. Thank you for giving me your point of view.

I was put into Special ED because of my stutter, doesn't sound like that was the case for you and I'm happy about that, glad to see that other schools are nice and not mean. Also my stutter is the same way.

This is me exactly, can relate 100%. My stuttering suddenly grew exponentially worse when I was Grade 11, and it became a vicious cycle that caused my self esteem to crash. From being a very social person, to someone who needs other people to order my food for me during meal times... I would brace myself, queue up with my heart rate rising to 100mph, realise I can't say anything and they leave the queue. When I call customer support for anything, I realise the words won't come out so I put down the phone and call an hour later....Speech Blocks have really destroyed my life, the moments when i know exactly what to say, but the words just won't come out and end up looking like a retarded goldfish with my mouth open. To make things worse, I developed a slurred speech since trying to find alternative ways to get the words out, making me even more inaudible. I feel that psychological stuttering is far worse than an actual physical speech disability is because you look perfectly fine, and you know exactly what to say, but sometimes the stutter comes and hits you like an iron brick and suddenly you have to try so hard to meet yours and others expectations in speech. You cannot blame it on a disability from an unfortunate accident, and you'll have more trouble trying to explain to them the actual reason especially if it's a complete stranger you only see briefly, I.e. A cashier.

Your story about having to quit performing at plays up until 10th grade reminds me of my experience with Drama class in junior high. I loved drama class up until I stuttered really bad while doing a skit during class. I never took drama class again even though I loved acting. Thank you for sharing your story. You are so brave!

I stutter too and I'm 14 and I've stuttered for as long as I can remember. I got made fun of a lot but luckily I don't anymore. But I can relate to you and I hope you don't get discouraged, persevere. I have low confidence and it seems no one understands :/ :( Omg when you explained the feeling when it doesn't come out is soo relatable for me :'( Thank you so so much for this :'(

Your video just made my day. I stutter as well especially when I do public speaking or when I have to introduce myself. The phone has always been my nightmare. I've got a little better when I met my wife..she accepts me as I am and that made me more confident of myself and now I stutter a little less. Thanks for sharing and tips.

Thanks so much I feel so much better. I know I’m not alone and people share my struggle. Stuttering does effect me in many negative ways but it makes me unique and different something many people can’t relate to.
