When speaking of the 1930’s film warning about the situation of the Jews in Europe, he says it was before anything had happened, referring of course to the Holocaust. What many people don’t realize is that toward the end of WWI and into the early 1920s, an estimated 150,000 Jews were massacred in eastern Europe as the Soviets and Ukrainian nationalists fought each other. Waves of soldiers and gangs of brigands attacked Jews during pogroms in towns across the region, with many more Jews being injured and made refugees. Many fled west into Polish and German lands, and that influx met with hostility among many in those places. In fact, more than one writer predicted that the Jews of Europe were in great peril. So by the ‘30s, the Jews had already been subjected to mass killings there - and those were in addition to the pogroms before WWI.
