    People complaining about the manner of speech sounding unbelievable should remember several things. First, this was an era before TV and radio, so regional accents were much stronger and more common. Second, the Bible was widely read and understood and its flowery manner of speaking was familiar and part of the usage of even the common folk. Third, this was also an era of story tellers, where information was passed on verbally and people had the patience to communicate and sit and listen to talk that may sound laborious to the modern ear - politicians back then who were known as top public speakers would go on for hours.

    Hailee is definitely the lead actress of this movie. How the hell she was nominated as supporting actress is still beyond me. She is the reason why the movie is so good and people flocked to see - her sensational acting at 13 - she should have won the Oscar for leading actress category.

    • @201hastings
      @201hastings Před 8 měsíci +1

      She was nominated for “best supporting actress” because that’s what the studio submitted her for because she had a better chance to win. Did you not know that? It’s pretty basic movie knowledge.

    Hailee Steinfeld' really and truly "nailed" this. She portrays absolutely accurately her character, one-third girl, one-third budding woman, one-third tomboy, and 100% strong-minded , opinionated and gutsy daughter of a murdered man , seeking justice for his death. She invests all of herself in her role and makes you believe she really is the person she is playing, the way an actor like Daniel Day Lewis does in his roles. Truly stupendous.

    The owner of the establishment is an absolute pro when it comes to acting and this young woman kept up with him punch for punch. You can often see a less experienced actor stifle a more experienced performance but if I didn't know any better, I'd say that she's been doing this for about 20 years. What a scene...

    This is what makes a good western into a great western, period type dialogue. People did not talk the same 150 years ago. Hell they talked differently 100 years ago. Different education levels for different people get different dialogue. I love it. There’s a few western movies that came out recently and the characters all talk like they’re from the hood in 1998.

    Thanks for posting. A great film scene based on a great scene and dialogue mostly as written by Charles Portis in the novel. For me, this scene and the final shootout are the best scenes in both versions of the film. In their own way, they each show the essence of the two principal characters. Mattie, clever, quick-witted, and independent - the smart business woman she would become. Cogburn, the fearless, "true grit" type that he had been. I agree with everyone else who is amazed by Hailee Steinfeld's first film performance. My dream scene, even though I loved Kim Darby in the first film, would be to see Haillee play this with the great Strother Martin, who played Stonewall in the first film

      Thanks for spelling it for me. Now it's easy to look up.
      "A writ of replevin is a prejudgment process ordering the seizure or attachment of alleged illegally taken or wrongfully withheld property to be held in the U.S. Marshal’s custody or that of another designated official, under order and supervision of the court, until the court determines otherwise. This type of writ is commonly used to take property from an individual wrongfully in possession of it and return it to its rightful owner."
