When Brian Wilson, as a little boy, heard the original Four Freshman, he said that's what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, and a few years later, he patterned the Beach Boys singing after the the Four Freshman.
I have been onto the Original Four Freshmen since 1952\1953..They have always been awesome.. The "New " Four Freshmen are jazz musicians and can sing their * A- -,* off. Elvis came along and - - - - the rest is History....I kept my few Freshmen Albums and once in a while heard them played on a Good Night time Radio Show that played " Jazz". I am 85 years now and still know where to find The Four Freshmen....Thanks to UTube !
@@anitataylor9823 So glad you still enjoy the Four Freshmen. The first song I heard on the college radio, was Day By Day. I immediately went out and bought that album, and became a fan. Their harmonies were incredible. I played the album one time, and the 2nd time I recorded it onto cassette. Later, I would play the album one more time, and record it onto cd. That album is a treasure.
Brian Wilson was enchanted by the sounds of the original Four Freshmen when he was very young. He incorporated the close four-part harmony used by the Four Freshman into many of his early compositions and it was magic. The two groups enjoyed mutual respect through their careers. OMG, what legacies!!
This is such a compliment, Brian Wilson took some musical styles from the Four Freshman in his compositions, and then for the new group to pay homage to the Beach Boys in return is a great thing.
Jaw dropping. Man, i loved the original band (4 Freshman)but these guys take it to another level. In my books there're the greatest & i'd have no issues traveling from Aus to the USA just to see them.
Bob Flanagan's voice became the personality sound that highlighted the recordings of the original Four Freshmen. The new groups do not modulate to add mood or dimension to their sound. They just take a deep breath and belt out the songs as many young artists do today and get paid well for doing so.
I still have my old 1964 Fender Precision Bass & case I bought in '64 to go on tour back then. It seems like it draws money to me like a magnet...some things bring good luck...
"Surfer Girl"......One of the songs that touched my young teenage heart and I probably wore out the cut on that album of the original tune by the Beach Boys. The Four Freshmen do a great rendition of this epic surf-side hit!
The original Four Freshmen were not fans of the Beach Boys. They seemed to be annoyed that the group that copied their sound was making much more money than they were. Nice to see this version of the Freshmen burying the hatchet.
Some of the greatest harmony parts are here in this song. Just listen to the different parts on the line 'make my heart come all undone' could not be better.
Wow, wow ,wow this is just too good! :D These harmonies were executed perfectly! I love the clean tone and attack on the tenor. Literally the best performance I have ever seen of this song (I'm being serious, I don't even think the beach boys could pull this off live)!
Just reading ( I Just wasn't made for these times ) and Brian Wilson recalled the day he first heard their 1958 album ( Voices in Love ) in a local record store " I listened to the whole album in the [ listening] booth. Walked out and said ' please can I have it Mommy ?' I was out of my mind after hearing that Four Freshman thing . I'd come home from school and go ' Aw fuck doing homework , I'm going go listen to the Four Freshmen !" The last original member retired in 1993 .
I believe the last original member Don Barbour passed away in June 2011. The current group, now in the early 20's, is doing a great job of keeping the flame alive!!
Nick Voyack To make it more ironic, Brian Eichenberger (who sings lead here) just joined Brian Wilson & Al Jardine's band and played his first gig with them last night. He handled some of the leads and the high parts that Brian Wilson used to do.
+MR noname Newsflash: tiffsaver is free to invoke whatever he so wishes, and there's absolutely nothing that you or any other sad individual can do about it. So suck it up!
I was just watching an interview by Carl Wilson in which he mentioned that Brian's interest in harmony came from listening to records of The Four Freshmen at home growing up. So I did a search of the original Four Freshmen and their influence on the Beach Boys is pretty obvious. Then to my surprise, in the margin I saw this video above and coincidentally this new version of the Four Freshmen group is singing the Beach Boys' Surfer Girl... probably the best non-BB version I've ever heard. So it's like my search has come full circle. :) Now I can't help wondering if members of this modern Four Freshmen are related to members of the original group. My guess is they probably are since they are so freely using the full official name "Four Freshmen" which has to be under copyright due to the relatively high number of records sold by the original group. Anyway, this is a beautiful sound and I'm so glad I found this.
The "cover" shock is not too difficult to understand in the realization that this is 2nd gen. FF. Still think the original group wouldn't approve. Correct me on this, please.
She wasn't born yet. But when I hear this song these days, the late, ill fated Nicole Brown Simpson comes clearly to my mind. You see, I called her in my thoughts "Surfer Girl."
@aldridgester. Answer to your question is yes. In fact, a little Beach Boy trivia for you, the orginal Four Freshmen was Brian Wilson's biggest influence .
Out of respect these guys harmonies were great and a genius like Brian wouldn’t borrow this style unless he could do it justice with respect to the originals 4 Freshmen Glad they covered it with a tasty rendition Thank the good lord he created the 4 Freshmen, and The Beach Boys.
FOUR FRESHMAN! Sadly, the Original Four Freshman all died. Ross Barbour, the last surviving member died in 2011 at age 82! The new group in this video, has the same name, The Four Freshman and sound a lot like the original group! Brian Wilson loved their great vocal harmonies!

That he did! I was just a year or three younger when I found that out!! BAM! in my mind, I am an even greater fan of Both groups now!!😊

He incorporated the close four-part harmony used by the Four Freshman into many of his early compositions and it was magic. The two groups enjoyed mutual respect through their careers. The guy on the right, Brian Eichenberger, now actually tours with The Beach Boys.
He does the best rendition of Ill Be Home For Christmas
Great voice any wonder he is touring with Mike and Bruce
BRIAN WILSON IS ONE FKNG GENIUS...
Brian loved their harmonizing.....it inspired him. Gotta say, Brian took it to an whole nuther level!!!!!!
The original freshman actually made fun of this song on stage a few times. I’m glad to see the new incarnation has some respect lol
Nice to know the current iteration has a bit more class
This is such a compliment, Brian Wilson took some musical styles from the Four Freshman in his compositions, and then for the new group to pay homage to the Beach Boys in return is a great thing.
having been a fan of the Four Freshman since 1951 there is not another group that shines better than they do .......Glennys
I wish more people kne about the four freshmen.

Bravo a thousand times! Just a great vocal ensemble!
Great!! No auto-tuning needed there!! First time I heard the 4 Freshmen, I knew exactly where the Beach Boys got their harmonies!
These guys are awesome! What a great tribute to Brian Wilson.
"Surfer Girl"......One of the songs that touched my young teenage heart and I probably wore out the cut on that album of the original tune by the Beach Boys. The Four Freshmen do a great rendition of this epic surf-side hit!
singing the song of the Alumns

And Brian was originally inspired by the original Freshmen harmony.
History of Brian Wilson stealing Four Freshmen music here. czcams.com/video/UM5UVal1u2g/video.html
Stealing? Come on.
b walters Uh...Brian Wilson used to hang out in Bob Flanagan's office and sing all his parts to him.
It's not like any of the people in this performance are original members, so I doubt they really care.
love it... Brian's inspiration for vocal harmonies..were these guys.
Brian's voice was the engine the drove Groups 22 and 23. His loss was devastating.
These guys looks under 40?

What an excellent group. Lots of talent and a great show if you can catch them in concert.
It should be noted that the FF were also instrumentalist that played while singing. On the rare side as groups go.

Originally from Columbus Indiana they are the reason why the Beach boys existed
