CZcams comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of CZcams comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

You can almost hear how this guys brain trys to process what he is hearing
yes I can, the silence is deafening.
Your point being?
Smitty Mross Sounds like his brain is experiencing a short circuit.
That really pissed on his bonfire didn't it
TIck, tick, tick, t'CHNK, tick, tick...........
I like this guy, unlike so many others he's actually considering what the hosts say, is willing to say "I don't know" and seems willing to change his mind.
Nosfrat Tirek agreed
Meh....he seemed to pause alot for me...which usually indicates a bit of snickering as he lowers the phone....so i say fake theist
TheAlexander1st
I don't know, he sounds uncomfortable, awkward. I reckon he's thinking for himself. If he avoids the Pastor for 24 hours you never know!
i like him too
He doesn't seem so pushy or angry, but still very confused.
I love the long silences as you can feel the cogs turning
I think Diana you're partially right. It is those gears coming to a halt in his brain. That comes from lack of use when it comes to intelligence rationale and logic. He's an idiot God bless you Diana oops sorry lol I'm an atheist by the way
Diana Bookworm His cogs are running out of WD40.
You can almost hear the squeaking between the gears.
You can the cogs jamming. According to this choad, there would be no enjoyment of good food because it's just a chemical reaction. I hate them so much.
At least I think he's actually trying.
A quicker way:
- Do you think that an atheist is capable of hate?
> Yes
- There you go, same thing, bye.
🤣
@Rod Loucks Doesn`t matter 2000 years of the SAME SHIT ! ............
@@ralfhaggstrom9862 agreed. It’s all nonsense. Funny part is theists all act like atheists are these cruel people out to destroy when in fact they are the ones truly opening eyes with simple logic
GUAI A TEH
If only they knew about your majestic Jesus 3.... With Cugino Gionata and cosmic crucifix power..... Every atheist would be converted!!!
Humans also feel hate, feel pain, pain anxiety, feelings are not exclusive to believers.
Dimas Luz But they feel hate, pain and anxiety for GOD !! If god don’t let em feel it, they don’t feel it ???!!!???
@@joecryptoe9800 define god?!?! are you talking about an interventionist god who watches everything you do? because if thats the case you have no free will because its all his plan. now you have a choice, free will, or gods plan? which do you choose?
My choice is REALITY, not a make-believe word of ghosts and gods...!
Special pleading; setting love apart from other emotions.
@@josephg6536 You do understand that Joe is a troll right?
Great segment. I can literally hear him trying to process the information that Is contrary to his world view. His brain is working hard to not have some dissonance here.
At least he’s trying. More than I can say for most callers. They can be arrogant in their ignorance
What really gets me are the ones who think that ignorance is a virtue.
Yes, in the 20-odd years the show has been going, a theist saying "I don't know" is so, so rare!
I almost choked on my burger
That is NOT a World-wiev, IT`S A RELIGIOUS CAGE .................
Something that bothers me with people who ''love isn't just chemical reactions'' is that they seem to not understand that the entire human body is made of chemical components. And every emotions we have are the products of chemical reactions. The very air we breathe is a chemical element.
Props to the caller for considering that he may need to revise his position. Most callers continue to fight logic, even when presented with overwhelming arguments.
But slavery is ok under God's context!!
Jen Peeples was the finest exponent this show ever had of the immediate, brief and lethally-penetrating question.
She's amazing.
God, these people are as deep as a coat of paint.
second coat of paint
As a sheet of graphene
God is love. Yea, sure..."Murder your only son for me Abraham.....OOPS...
Just kidding!"
John Morris you’ve taken that out of context He was just testing Abraham blah blah blah bullshit bullshit bullshit I’m drowning in my own credulity and ignorance to reality blah blah blah
only if you already believe can you see the REAL context of anything in the magic book....
I want you to imagine your dog doing that to his own puppy to worship you.
John Morris mock God if you want to but it's not wise you will reap what you sow whether you choose to believe him or not many make that mistake but God will have the last word
John Morris. you completely missed the point of why god told Abraham to give him his son.
I think he needs more chemical reactions in his brain.
lewisner I agree, even though they wouldn't have any meaning! 😉
@@JJ-ju6ky come on, guys. He clearly was trying. He accepted an assertion on authority, but then decided to look into it for himself.
And when presented with a contradiction decided to go away and think about it rather than jumping to another point to keep arguing. This guy is the kind of theist worth having these conversations with. Kudos to him for trying.
What brains ? ..................
😂😂😂
The patience of John And Jen is remarkable and their attempts at reason more than laudable.
It never ceases to amaze me the extent of the religious brainwashing which still needs challenging and undoing in this day and age..
Wild Heart yeah Matt would've killed that shit in seconds
It is honestly very, very sad.
Seems there is far more brainwashing nowadays.
His dumb argument boils down to "you can't like chocolate if you know that it's composed of molecules..."
Or "you can't find a sunset beautiful if you know that the sun is a burning ball of hydrogen and helium..."
Excellent point.
Yep, it's the Fallacy of Composition, or Fallacy of Division, depending on which way you come at the analysis. It tries to overlook the emergent properties of systems, and sometimes the context in which they function. For example, "How can a pendulum measure time? It's just a string and a weight." This argument requires ignoring both how oscillations work in general and the existence of a gravitational field in particular.
And such fallacies are remarkably pervasive, even among educated people who ought to know better. My favorite example is when people conclude that consciousness must be a hidden property of the universe, because we can't identify it as a specific neural structure in the brain. Therefore, based on no evidence, we conclude that it must exist outside the brain? But consciousness is a function, not an object, so we would not expect to find it by looking at the structure of objects.
The fact that love can be measured in the form of chemical reactions means that love is more real than any god.
This sounded like a guy who never questioned things like this. His mind was completely blown. This conversation could have very well opened his mind to the world of Atheism.
Hopefully.
Alex Rincon the guy wasn't in the next room. communication lines take time to reach to the other person. my cell phone does the same thing.
Just maybe he'll be hosting AX in 2023 :)
There is no world of "atheism". You're talking like a cult member.
The Silence. I love when you can literally feel the caller trying to wrap their heads around what they've just been told.
I've been watching the Atheist Experience clips for years and this has got to be one of the best segments of quick and relevant counterarguments I've seen.
I like Matt's savage logical beatdowns but John and Jen's reserved pummeling here is masterful.
The Truth
Nice post and well said
I like this guy. So humble and open minded. He's willing to consider what he is hearing.
he is also brainwashed!
Yea but he is as dumb as a post, although I can't see how he could be so dumb and have reached adulthood, I suspect he's fake.
according to theists, we have meaning because of god, and that meaning is to worship god.
wow, why am I not overwhelmed by that deal?
Because you're just a bunch of elemenents and chemical reactions? =D
Frater chaos- yeah then why believe is crappy book to prove he exists cuz from I can tell , fairytales don't mean shit to reality
Maybe you do not want to give your life and MONEY to a fairy-tale ................
@Austin Martín Hernández They are .................
@Boot Hat would you please copy and paste any place in any of my comments where I used the word"all"?
Love is not an entity that exist outside of us. People can feel love without needing to attach it to a deity.
Exactly! Agreed!
I've seen countless nature programs, where mama animals cuddle with their babies. Not always to protect or nurse them, just to cuddle, like "I'm here for you! I care about you!" Our pets do the same with us. My kids and I had a nanny goat who brushed up to us and gave hugs. We loved her, and she loved us back. But she never knew if there was a"God" or not and she probably wouldn't have cared, either. I think she was more intelligent than the dude on the phone, too.
His brain is trying its hardest to comprehend the simplicity of this topic. Our whole body is a chemical reaction. One big chemical reaction. I feel bad for this guy. Clearly, his world is falling apart. He is comparing a computer to humanity--- I am kind of flabbergasted.
Your brain is basically a computer. His comparison is not flawed. The problem is he is comparing a very simple machine to a superlatively complex biological machine.
Quetzalcoatl his comparison IS flawed. A computer just sits there if you don't type commands into it.
A humans brain is self aware and can perform computations automatically and uncounciously.
If the comparison wasnt flawed then the hosts wouldn't have commented saying it was flawed.
But sometimes what the caller truly means just goes right over their heads.
Not it isn't. Not all computers require human inputs. Some are programmed for automation and AI learning. Computers are getting more and more powerful. Just a matter of time before they outperform the human brain in term of computing power. And yes they will be self-aware.
So the possibility of computers filling the bill of a set of characteristics the human brain currently has in the future(that they certainly don't know) makes a false equivalency valid?
WHAT?(even if computers managed to fit that bill one day, that doesn't make any of the massive differences between the two any less prominent)
+Scissorman
That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying the brain is just a computer (and man made computer has the potential to outperform it), so it's not false equivalency. The brain is just superlatively more complex and organic. It is still a computational system.
If that guy turns on his computer, and searches Google for the word love, his computer will make no reference to God being involved in love.
It sounds to me like the caller is struggling to deal with the idea that if his god does not exist, then the charms of the world might be lost. Therefore he needs for there to be a god in existence for his sense of wonder to remain. His needs require for there to be a god. He's working backwards.
Too much externalized teleology
Beckrinn P. YOU NAILED IT. YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD.
wow that sucks for him then
James Charles Boylan
All he has to do is watch some Carl Sagan right now - he'll be blown away.
It is more like he is sensing that there might be errors in the thinking model that he is stuck inside. What is more his motions dose not know how to deal with it.
It appears that someone told this guy something about atheists, and he accepted their authority. Then, he decided to look into it.
There is hope for this guy.
The first goddite I have noticed that actually LISTENED and didn’t interrupt, AT ALL - nevermind the CONSTANT interrupting, talk-over and simply NOT HEARING most goddites do on this show (and elsewhere!)... I understand why though... LISTENING kills your godism arguments!!
He did very well, I agree. Love Matt on the show, but I wonder if he would have given the deadspace and arguments we heard here that have given this caller pause.
What a calm, polite and pleasant caller. I hope he's doing well!
I like caller like these. Their lack of knowledge is not due to ignorance. They are what this show help the most.
The chemical reactions and the way we interpret those reactions is called love.
Love is just the word for it.
How is it so hard for the religious to understand the simple realities of the way things work?!
Shocking Just a second! Do you actually expect Christians to THINK AND REASON?
Ha ha, no not so much expect as hope
@@JohnMorris-ge6hqYears or decades of religious brainwashing severely damages the ability to think and reason.
It sounds like HAL the computer called in to the show...."I'm sorry, I can't let you do that Dave...."
Ben Gambino lol. Awesome!
Nailed it Ben.
One of the things that I think is most damaging about religion and believing in God is that it takes away people's humanity. Instead of being happy for themselves about something they did or something they feel, they give all the credit to God.
Noah Freitas have you ever been to Calvary.
@@iamthatiamiamthatiam2942 No
Noah Freitas No, what
I have not been to Calvary. Didn't even know what that was.
Noah Freitas . Something along the same lines, is the video I watched where a five-year-old girl had been kidnapped, and had been subjected to 12 years of abuse, before being found and rescued by police. Some moron in the comments said “Let us thank almighty God for rescuing this child.” I nearly vomited. I replied back that if he thinks it was the power of his God that saved that girl, why the hell did he wait for 12 years letting her suffer all that abuse? Such people are so gone in the head, as to not see the sense behind what I said.
WOW. The calmness with which the hosts handled this is really inspirational. Just quietly stick to the facts. RESPECT.
Someone fed this guy some really bad information at a certain point that he hadn't ever really examined until now. Religion is just teeming with these little poison bonbons.
Great stuff, Jen!
Jenn's dog analogy had him totally stumped! Well done.
What a great call/wonderful responses.
No swearing, shouting or abuse from the hosts - just calm, polite and respectful dialogue.

The caller's silences are... saddening. He's clearly never had atheists answer these questions before.
This is a good thing though. Its hopefully the start of change, he can really give thought to things now.
@@SignOfTheTimes008 This. It shows he is actually thinking about what he is being said to him...even if only for a second.
I don’t know , great answer. Now take it the next step and find out. Your almost there Mark .
You can hear the gears turning in his head as he feels the responses to his arguments painting him into a corner of his own making.
Love is an emotion which evolved over time from other feelings. We gave it the name "love" and even it's own holiday. Animals express love to each other and even other animals. So much we need to learn from our own surroundings. The silence when the hosts drops a bomb, all I hear is the typical cartoon xylophone chime...dink, dink from the eyes blinking...too funny.
Glad I listened to the end - this guy was GREAT. It starts, and goes, so cringy with all his long pauses but his mini revelation and honestest at the end were fantastic. WELL DONE BUDDY, welcome to the side of logic and true enlightenment.
Oh crap, my computer is humping my leg.
James West You need to train you PC not to do that.
I hit it with the newspaper but it doesn't do any good. Should I use a 2X4 next time?
James West
Have you tried installing Windows on it? That should kill it.
Nah, unix would work much better.
"Are you trying to tell me machines don't have feelings? " It's like he just arrived on this planet
I love it when callers actually listen to responses.
It was great to see the hosts make their point and wait patiently for a response without hammering the point over and over. It helped that the caller took the time to think about what he heard from the hosts. I’ll have to consider that, was a great response.
Best clip yet of this show. The presenters nailed it. Bloody wonderful, calm concise answers. Brilliant. It’s all just bloody chemicals!!!! That’s so ace.
As much as I like Matt, I quite enjoy these clips without him. They're so much less confrontational and intense.
I agree. Matt is a formidable debater, but not the greatest educator. Other hosts aren’t as quick or forthright, but they leave callers more likely to investigate their dogma further. Matt simply dismantles them 😋
@@infidelcastro5129 you should listen to Matt's explanation, look up the video about calling people idiots.
also, i've heard Matt have great conversations with many callers. it's when the callers are idiots that invokes Matt's wrath.
@styx85 Matt gets confrontational when it's necessary. he is just as likely to have a sensible conversation. it's not his fault when morons call him and refuse to listen to his side, and cut him off. find one time when Matt was confrontational to a caller that actually called to have an equal discussion and not just preach.
Yes, Matt's problem is that he's a bully and always concerned to project himself. It's pretty obvious he's simply transferred the arrogant certainty of religion to atheism. I can see why he was tempted to train for the priesthood.
I love him too but I totally get what do you mean
Tim Minchin - "Love without evidence is stalking."
The amount of chill in this video is oddly refreshing.
The responses that you guys give this guy are perfect, this might be my favorite episode. Like, just straight logic and I really think the caller left thinking "wow I might need to rethink a lot of things"
When I was in college, one of my roommates said he required a god to wake up in the morning. I thought normal brain function was sufficient. It was surreal.
He was dyslexic by any chance ? Maybe he meant a "dog" barking to wake him up .
Alvaro Goenaga
Funny, that reminded me of a skit from a British show I watched as a kid called Dave Allen at Large. A mailman laughed off a sign that said “beware of god.” He was struck down by lightning.
But no, not dyslexic. Apparently, just “waking up” in the morning required divine intervention, according to his thinking.
Hmm... Wondering if the same would apply to the podcast “Waking Up with Sam Harris?”
I love my toaster but it doesn't love me and this hurts. It's a cruel world we live in!!!
Sounds like you were burnt by that relationship.
That's because you were cheating on the toaster with the microwave.
These kinds of slow considerate interactions are very interesting to watch.
I never understood the idea that emotions are less important, just because they are "only" chemical reactions. People still experience them and very strongly so. So what does it matter if it's just chemical reactions? It doesn't lessen anything.
The problem is that theres an extra word. Is a chair "just" pieces of cut up wood? Or is a chair pieces of cut up wood? Theres no "just" about it, thats what it is. Love isnt "just" a chemical reaction in the brain. Love IS a chemical reaction in the brain. Thats what it is.
@@UngoogleableMan yeah use of the “just” is stupid. Love being “just” a chemical reaction occurring in the brain doesn’t make it feel a bit less real and impactful
I enjoy these guys hosting more than Matt. They are able to break down the subject matter clearly and professionally, and get the callers to really think, rather than simply say some rude comments and then hang up.
How many clips involving Matt have you actually even watched?
Very many. Sometimes his attitude is warranted, often it comes off as arrogance and impatience.
I hope you're joking xD
The dog love human analogy was SUPERB! Well done Jen xx
I want to thank the caller. It is very rare for anyone to call in and admit they need to revise or rethink a position. It shows a serious level of maturity and honest desire to reach an valid conclusion.
Buddy, take a cup of flour and eat it. Then take a cup of sugar and eat it. Then take 2 eggs and eat them. Then take 2 teaspoons of yeast and eat it. When you are done puking all of this up, then ask how that was. Then eat some bread and see how you feel. OK? I like bread.
You see, a bunch of components can change how the component parts are thought of. Come on, man.
I feel bad for this guy...he's trying.
Vichrae V.
Trying what??
@@davidstarks3308 Trying to think.
Love John's attitude and approach.
Very patient and understanding.
~ A year later: Thank you, Jen & John, as this is one of the more interesting and intelligent videos I have seen thus far.
Cheers, DAVEDJ ~
It’s absolutely frustrating to listen to these callers who have been taught by some ignoramus that atheists are basically missing morality. Why? because we do not have God to tell us how to feel, think and act. I am really starting to think that religion does more harm than good. They’ve been indoctrinated to think that if they lose faith in a god then they'll be an empty shell with no rhyme or reason. I envy them for their God who is in charge. Sometimes I just want to be parented again. But I also know that at some point I'm going to have to start truly thinking for myself.
Funmakers atheists don't have to be atheist. something in their thinking stops them from believing in a supreme being known as GOD. GOD still loves them just as much.
I Am That I Am I Am That I Am It’s the thinking that stops them. Once you realize that there are so many problems with religious doctrine and that God apparently doesn’t want to give real proof of his existence then the the God that allegedly loves us has no basis for belief. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
I Am That I Am That I Am Really...?? God loves us so much that.... me and you are likely to end up with dementia or alzheimer in old age.......thank you God !!
Ateo forever dementia and Alzheimer's disease are not God's doing. that comes with life. ageing is life.
I Am That I Am I Am That I Am No, what we are has been " designed " by God....so, anything around us, including us...is God's doing.....so again, let's do three cheers for our loving God, thanks again for a shit end of life !! Amen........note : ( luckily i don't believe in God )....
Nice to hear a completely calm conversation about this subject 👍🏻
"Love isn't real, it's just-
*proceeds to explain what happens in the body that triggers the sensation we call love* ".
I once saw a comic of someone who said that. The other dude kicked him in the balls and responded with "pain isn't real. It's just a reaction of chemicals".
Does this guy believe in pain?
He must believe in pain as he is inflicting it now to my ears
I wonder if he doesn't believe in hunger, thirst, fear, sadness, sickness or exhaustion either
nocalsteve since I've never seen or been to any of the oceans, I know without any doubt they exist. I don't need evidence they exist, I know they do.
Yeah, but without God, how can nachos taste so good?!!! Without God, its just a chemical reaction received by my taste receptors. So obviously, nachos proves God. I'm now convinced in a god! Thy name be nachos!!!
And, when we die, we get transported to the Cool Ranch? (upstate)
Lmao
Great job Jen....Love the dog love analogy....I think you shook his world.
Wow, this was a great clip! This is in my opinion exactly what this show is for!
Checkmate by Jen @7:00. Awesome!
My dog loves me and he's not a christian or believe in any gods.
How do you know
The book example is simple and brilliant. Language is EXACTLY giving ideas meaning.
Loved the dog analogy!! that is brilliant...definitely gave that guy food for thought!!!
Does the caller have no notion of the wider world outside of Christianity? Does he think that Buddhists, Daoists, Hindu's,Sikhs etc do not experience love?
Evidently. That's what happens when you're desperate to believe your religion makes you special.
My dogs experience emotion, love and a God. I'm their alpha, there for I'm their God!
This man is really trying. Kudos for him. Wish him all well in his new atheistic life
One of my favorite excerpts.
Check, check, check, and then Checkmate + concede
Pretty much sums that clip up
People who believe in God usually believe in hate, certainly not in love.
I liked this caller. He had some decent thoughts and listened to the host and considered their counter thoughts. He will be in our ranks soon enough lol
I don’t know why I am laughing so hard at this call. It’s the most emotionless call from everyone on both sides talking about one of the biggest emotions. 😂😂Lol
This is my issue with religious beliefs, it negates any critical thinking and common sense. His argument is so nonsensical it is kind of sad to think people actually have zero understanding outside their beliefs.
guess what's sadder, they vote
OMG. This dude has a loooow processor. If he was a computer he would be a 1984 Commodore 64 - He processes one information per minute
I like when calls stay rather chill and ppl aren't screaming over eachother lol
Jen totally blew this guy brain up! He was lost and had no clue to her answers.......
The ignorance of these callers is truly terrifying. The extent of their brainwashing is monstrous. They need to be 'enlightened' about how sheltered and narrow their education is. They are at the same emotional, superstitious level as any suicide bomber.
There's a serious time lag between Earth an the planet Fuckupped!
He was obviously talking about intrinsic meaning, while they were talking about subjective meaning. I think that they should've made a greater effort to bridge the misunderstanding, instead of taking his claim as preposterous at face value.
Ruppettypuppetty I agree, but not for the reasons they make it out to be, I feel. I don't think he learned anything from the conversation this way.
What the heck is intrinsic meaning? I would argue nothing has meaning until a subject endows it with meaning.
He was obviously talking about intrinsic meaning (which is an absurd thing to talk about, and probably indicates that he is not worthy of any consideration), while they were talking about subjective meaning (Yes, the only kind of meaning that makes sense). I think that they should've made a greater effort to bridge the misunderstanding ( It is brave of you to admit that when it is obvious that they should not in any way have made a greater effort to bridge the misunderstanding) , , instead of taking his claim as preposterous at face value.(This assumes they did anything to make this claim preposterous. They already did enough just listening to him, and not laughing at how pathetic he is.)
It is the strangest thing to see a theist start to think, hugely entertaining
Sometimes I put these clips on when I go to bed, close my eyes and listen to it. I have gotten up and cracked open my eyes almost every single time this guy pauses because I thought the damn video was buffering, or it just ended! Sheesh!
I respect all three conversationalists. This was a good conversation.
The universe doesn’t owe you a transcendent, eternal purpose. Just recognize that YOU give your most important things value!
i love this duo
jen & john are great eductaors
Love can be 'seen.' It's not irrational to accept the emotion exists in our brains.
Increased dopamine and serotonin levels, increased heart rate, appearance of goosebumps are all physical reactions that can be observed and measured.
I appreciate that this caller thinks before he responds and actually answers questions like a normal person, rather than being defensive and dishonest like most other callers of faith. He's capable of a real conversation and thought. That doesn't sound like much, but listen to the other callers and you'll get what I mean.
I really like the comparison to stories being ink on a page.
"Love would just be chemical reactions"... he had it but then a short circuit happened in his synapses. He doesn't understand... to him, a Popoff is needed to give it meaning. Excellent comments by Jen in getting to the heart of the matter.
This is the funniest AE I have ever watched!
They completely blew this guy's mind I think.
This is hilarious, love the long pauses. Nice guy, but tripped up on his prior beliefs.
My favorite part of any of these calls is that pause. You know the one.
Props to this guy for actually listening
I agree
