I'm one of those that absolutely *loves* the new Barenaked Ladies sound. Grinning Streak and Silverball are just pop perfection. I have all of the Barenaked Ladies albums so I'm not getting into them late, but I really, really love their new songs! They're more levelled, more measured and less experimental or 'weird' if you will. They still have quirky lyrics but their recent songs just make me smile and cheer me up. Ed's voice is just beautiful too!

Stu Acker Couldn't agree more. I've been a fan since my first listen but honestly, I love where they are now more than ever. Now a 4 piece? So be it. Wanna try out a totally off the wall sound? Ok! Reimagine old hits? Why not. Jim and Kev get more album and stage time? Thank goodness. Those two are so talented that they deserve anything they have. I love where they are now and look forward to more. Cheers!

I've een a fan of BNL since the earliest inception, to which I'd argue status among their biggest fans . . . but this just isn't the same. I'm not on the "not without Page" bandwagon, but there is something seriously inept without him. All In Good Time was great, but Grinning Streak was a joke, and this album . . . it picks up a bit, but its music and lyrical creativity is what I would have expected from them when they started in the late 80's. However, they had a great wit, creativity, and unique approach early on -- but now its all synth-pop half-assed instrumentation with lyrics that relate with teenagers. Not sure what happened to my favourite band of all time, but I may have to pretend they retired after Are Me / Are Men.

Axis Edwards Same here. They need to get back to writing smart, witty, thoughtful lyrics instead of this 'motivational quote', hook-driven bullshit. The electronic sound is going to sound dated in 5 years (if it isn't already) whereas their old songs, where you could actually hear all the instruments they're playing, have a timeless appeal and a lot more 'character'. My advice would be to start writing songs that mean *something* and bring back the double bass and bongos LOL. I'm sure the band is financially pretty well-off so I can't imagine why they're putting out this kind of cookie-cutter, radio-friendly crap. Midlife (or identity) crisis, perhaps!
PS. I hope the band doesn't read these comments! If they do they should know that they are still my favorite band and they have an incredible musical legacy that won't be marred by a few crap albums.

Axis Edwards Also, you have the same last name as me. Just noticed that.

Garry E They are more or less the Benjamin Button of bands -- started out very mature, wise, insightful, interesting, honest, and humble . . . but un-aged themselves.
It makes me wonder how much Page mattered to the group as a necessity to all success prior to 'AIGT.' Again, I'm not on the "not without Page" bandwagon, but I wonder if his impact and control harnessed the talent and minds of the group, to focus all individual influence into something that mattered - which was the Page era of BNL, its all phenominal. But these past 2 albums? It's almost like the modern BNL is saying, "we have such loyal fans . . . I wonder how many will eat up a bunch of dogshit if we just stop trying." Even "Get Back Up" sounds like a permutation of the riff in "Summertime."
Rather, I'm not convinced we'll ever hear another 'talked-about, argued-about' fan favourite from them ever again.

Axis Edwards A majority of the 'fans' of their recent albums seem to be teenage girls. (However, they are probably disproportionately represented due to their proclivity for social media.) That may sound sexist (it is) but most young girls (scratch that, young people in general) have shitty taste in music and minimal exposure to quality stuff. Also, I find it hard to fathom that a person could go from liking their Page era music to liking the recent stuff. They've got a completely different sound and it's certainly a step down from even their worst stuff prior to Page leaving.

Garry E I couldn't agree more. I thought 'AIGT' was a promising change in their direction - really enjoyed that album - but I couldn't make it more than a minute into most of the Grinning Streak tracks. This album I listened start to finish begging myself to like it but . . . nope. Not really.
