  • yarn made of polyester fiber is highly versatile and can be used to make a wide variety of carpet styles superior to many lower grades of synthetic fibers. Polyester fibers readily accept dyes, allowing for greater variety of color hues and clarity. In addition, carpets made of polyester fiber are resistant to everyday food and beverage stains.
But while Mohawk’s line of carpets made from recycled plastic drink bottles is clearly interesting, it’s not the only story the company has to tell. The Mohawk tradition of making fine carpets began in 1878. What started out with just 14 looms is now the second largest carpet mill in the world and the leading producer of area rugs and mats. In the mid-1980’s, Mohawk partnered with DuPont to produce some of the first Stainmaster carpets. Located in Calhoun, Georgia, the company’s brands include Mohawk, Karastan, Horizon and Galaxy. Today, Mohawk Industries employs 24,000 people.
A few tips may help you choose the right carpet for you - and the area of your home that needs floor covering. Let’s begin with color. Light colors generally show fewer footprints. Dark colors show less soil and stains. To minimize maintenance, light colors are best restricted to areas of the home, such as dining rooms, formal living rooms and guest bedrooms. Multicolored carpets are very effective in minimizing the effects of everyday dirt and soil.
Next, you’ll want to decide on the type of carpet fiber you want. The four major fiber types are polypropylene, polyester, nylon and wool. Polypropylene is the least costly of the four major carpet fibers and is inherently resistant to food stains, bleach and pet accidents.
Polyester is also inexpensive and resists stains from common household food and beverages.
Nylon is the most versatile fiber, used in all types of carpet styles and available in the widest selection of colors, prices and styles. Nylon is treated with stain resistant technology to make cleaning easier. Nylon carpet is slightly more expensive than polyester or polypropylene but is designed to be used in every room in the house. Finally, certain high-end carpets and rugs use wool fibers. While wool is outstanding, it’s so costly that today it is rarely used throughout a home.
Remember too that choosing carpet color and fiber is only the beginning. Choosing the right pad to go underneath can be just as important. For residential installation, Mohawk recommends a cushion of no more than 7/16 inches thick and no less than ¼ inch thick with six pounds per cubic square foot of density or its equivalent.
As far as maintenance goes, it’s a rule that lower quality carpets with minimum twist and low density will not retain their “like-new” appearance as long as heavier, denser fabric made of highly twisted yarn. Once the carpet is in your home, a thorough once-a-week vacuuming and quick clean up of spills will add to the long-term performance. Mohawk also recommends you have your carpets cleaned once every 18 months by a professional. This will remove any accumulated soils and stains and rejuvenate the carpet pile.
