  • democracynow.org - The Green Party’s national convention opens today in Houston, Texas, and Dr. Jill Stein is expected to win the party’s nomination. But will she win the support of former Bernie Sanders supporters? Last week, Democracy Now! hosted a debate between the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich about the presidential race. Hedges has endorsed Jill Stein. Reich is backing Hillary Clinton after endorsing Bernie Sanders during the primaries. Reich served in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet as labor secretary from 1993 to 1997.

I would have said back then that I completely agree with Hedges( as I do now in 2022). .However, now in October 2022, and with the benefit of hindsight, I find Reich"s argument back then about the dangers of the Supreme Court, was also sadly justified .Who today would have thought the Supreme Court would have turned back the clock on Roe v. Wade?

@lindahidalgo1804 The Supreme Court is wholly bought. All wars since WWII have been unconstitutional. Literally all that can be done to stop the tide of regression is mass movements. That's all that has ever done it. This isn't about getting over a hump and back into stability. Instability is here to stay RE Climate breakdown. The elites won't respond rationally, nor will their appointees in the Supreme Court unless their conflict of interest is trumped by public outcry

Yeah, I respect Bernie, love his ideas, but he wimped out in the end. At this point, if the Republicans could switch to Kasich, they'd be trampled by both sides rushing to vote for him in November. We've got the two worst candidates of all time to choose from, what an embarrassment. No matter which one of those two wins, we lose. And Reich's cowardly enabler attitude is mostly responsible-- you have to STAND UP and say no more BS from the democrats. You don't "hold their feet to the fire" by letting them take our votes for granted and do whatever the heck they want. Plus, Trump will not make the progressive movement disappear, he'll strengthen it.

you need democracy. but the american people are not 'citizen' quality. they go about their lives, and choose between humptydee and his brother, or don't bother, since neither has anything useful to say. politicians have usurped the position at the bottom of the status ladder once occupied by pimps and child abusers, and yet there is no visible reaction from the people, who regard politician rule as ordained by god, graven on stone.
they are truly cattle. 'only the people can do that!' is right, but with the proviso: 'if anyone can.' and they can't.

Robert Reich is neither a progressive nor an intellectual, but a mediocre advertising executive. The contrast with Chris Hedges perfectly makes the point of what our current culture is defined by: advertising bullshit

this conversation proves how all that we see is in the eye of the beholder (we each give it our own meaning). the same situation is interpreted in a very different ways by two different people. Then add the viewers and our individual, unique points of view. What is the Truth here? just a little existentialism for ya in the middle of the apparent tempest

Chris Hedges, is about surgically fixing the system.
Robert Reich, is about applying a bandaid.

Does Chris Hedges sound passionate? Usually when I listen to him, it makes me sad because he sounds so hopelessly defeated all the time. I almost feel like we can fight it, listening to him now.
He can be a little unforgiving sometimes though...
