- democracynow.org - The Green Party’s national convention opens today in Houston, Texas, and Dr. Jill Stein is expected to win the party’s nomination. But will she win the support of former Bernie Sanders supporters? Last week, Democracy Now! hosted a debate between the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich about the presidential race. Hedges has endorsed Jill Stein. Reich is backing Hillary Clinton after endorsing Bernie Sanders during the primaries. Reich served in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet as labor secretary from 1993 to 1997.

As usual Chris was right all along.
Yep agreed, hands down!
I would have said back then that I completely agree with Hedges( as I do now in 2022). .However, now in October 2022, and with the benefit of hindsight, I find Reich"s argument back then about the dangers of the Supreme Court, was also sadly justified .Who today would have thought the Supreme Court would have turned back the clock on Roe v. Wade?
@@lindahidalgo1804 That's on the Democrats for not codifying it into law decades ago. Now they're using Roe v Wade as a marketing tool for votes. Disgusting all the way around.
@lindahidalgo1804 The Supreme Court is wholly bought. All wars since WWII have been unconstitutional. Literally all that can be done to stop the tide of regression is mass movements. That's all that has ever done it. This isn't about getting over a hump and back into stability. Instability is here to stay RE Climate breakdown. The elites won't respond rationally, nor will their appointees in the Supreme Court unless their conflict of interest is trumped by public outcry
Maybe demos should have codified roe 2009 when Obama had a supermajority or 2001 after winning the two senate seats in Georgia
I'm with Chris Hedges on this.
It's clear if either of the major parties win, it's a win for corporate America.
Damn, Chris is a prophet. He's so on point then and now more than ever.
Hell yeah!
He's a heavyweight. And charismatic.
@@Frip36bs is bs
You are the man Chris Hedges! Utmost respect! You are right. Bernie absolutely should have ran independent with Jill Stein.
Yeah, I respect Bernie, love his ideas, but he wimped out in the end. At this point, if the Republicans could switch to Kasich, they'd be trampled by both sides rushing to vote for him in November. We've got the two worst candidates of all time to choose from, what an embarrassment. No matter which one of those two wins, we lose. And Reich's cowardly enabler attitude is mostly responsible-- you have to STAND UP and say no more BS from the democrats. You don't "hold their feet to the fire" by letting them take our votes for granted and do whatever the heck they want. Plus, Trump will not make the progressive movement disappear, he'll strengthen it.
Robert Reich -- the days of voting for the lesser of two evils is OVER.
I advice you read what happened in Germany in the 30s when people thought that way. Learned this from Chris Hedges btw.
Chris Hedges. Thank you for telling the truth and standing up against the democratic system
I think rather he stood up for the democratic system by standing up against the democrats. ;o)
Post Democratic Party of the Corporate State
Chris Hedges is amazing! He was completely right, and a visionary!
The one and only Chris Hedges keep up the good work
Reich: "I couldn't agree more with Chris Hedges more about his critique on Neo Liberalism", but I continue to support Hillary Clinton and the DNC establishment. Does this guy hear himself talk????
From Reich's perspective, burning the structure all down is too extreme. Expect that from someone who worked in the system.
Self-awareness or self-reflection is not part of the neolib character.
He was hoping for a future appointment from Clinton.
It shows how stupid professor Reich was. The night they nominated Hilary was the night Trump won. Why? Because Hilary and Bill were long time Washington crooks and everybody knew it and we're tired of it.
Here after Jimmy Dore show. It is time for a good third party.
Fight for Ranked Choice Voting first.
It has already been here and is still here, the Green Party.
And has for that fraud of a lefty u call jimmy dore dose not have the interests of the left all this clown is doing is deviding the left with the force the vote don’t get me wrong I think it is a good idea to push for media care for all but not the way Jimmy when about it he just made that issue all about him and his big fat fucking ego all he did was bash Bernie sanders and AOC only because they would not come on his show and then his fragile ego could not handle that so he whent on a bash Bernie call him a fraud and go on and on about AOC and call her and the Squad the fraud squad how original the only fraud I see trying to destroy the left is u Jimmy Dore u boot licking GOP lover and FOX News lover Donald trump lover that’s all jimmy dore is
Jimmy Dore! 🤣
The 2 party system is not representing the people, so the people must break it and create a new one! Only the people can do that!
Why is it "the people" (i.i. the Green Party) always figures they to start at the top and work their way down? The Green Party has effectively no one in Congressional, Senate, State or Local offices to support them. How do you propose they would govern?
The old thinking that a persons vote can be wasted is just outdated. It was a propaganda tool that they are still trying to use against a non-establishment (Empire) party or candidate.
Jill Stein is a real choice, the 2 party system is set up to discourage voters from accepting that they have a better choice.
you need democracy. but the american people are not 'citizen' quality. they go about their lives, and choose between humptydee and his brother, or don't bother, since neither has anything useful to say. politicians have usurped the position at the bottom of the status ladder once occupied by pimps and child abusers, and yet there is no visible reaction from the people, who regard politician rule as ordained by god, graven on stone.
they are truly cattle. 'only the people can do that!' is right, but with the proviso: 'if anyone can.' and they can't.
Voting for Jill Stein. Won't vote for lies, corruption, and voter fraud.
That's the plan.
Spread this message everywhere you possibly can!
So you're voting for the candidate who selected a VP, who called Sanders a White Nationalist. Ok. But ya know... standards and purity and all that.
I don't think lies, corruption, and voter fraud should ever be included in a purity test. The fact that these things don't bother you is because you support a candidate who's a corrupt liar who won the nomination through voter fraud.
+Mary Walters So your ARE ok with a VP pick who claims Sanders and his supporters are White Supremiststs?
Chris Hedges is such a fucking bad ass.
No Robert.. Bernie never held them accountable.. I love Bernie, but I just wish he would march to the tune of the speech he used to awake so many of us...
I love listening to Hedges
Yep, he's taught me so much and opened my eyes to what I've always instinctively known. Chris was able to clearly and concisely verbalize this for me.....Thank you Chris, you're my hero & mentor!
Good one Reich. WE got that revolutionary candidate for the Dems in 2020. Joe Biden. Do these clowns never get tired of lying/being wrong?
And now he's doing the "you gotta vote for him or your stealing from the Democrats" bullshit. At least he wasn't trotting out that crap back in 2016. But that was because, like so many others, Trump winning was inconceivable to them.
@@DennisMoore664 Chris Hedges is still supporting the Green Party in 2020. Hedges is consistent.Trump is a symptom of a larger problem called neoliberalism. Reich is a puppy dog for the establishment always has been.
Answer: No. Lying is what politicians do regularly. Maybe there is a class they take. 🙃
What Chris Hedges said.
Chris is one of the most Awake people in our world today. There are different levels of awake and I applaud him for the level of which he has attained.
Chris used a much stronger and accurate language. There is no hold back in the face of evil.
Watching this four years later, and bam, Chris Hedges just dismantles Reich.
So relevant, today.
LOL Reich had his ass handed on a tray by Hedges!!!
This aged well, taste as fresh as 4 years ago
Yep we sucked it up and got behind the failed candidate Hillary and Trump still got to pick the supreme court nominee... if only Robert didn't get paid to not understand politics he would be in complete agreement with Chris.
Chris Hedges, probably the most underrated intellectual of our time. I think his credit will come but it'll be many decades after our time...
Heard enough from Dr. Reich and despite liking his positions on most topics of public concerns, as well as Bernie-events since the 2016 debacle of many Dems supporters (recent events of (Centralists/Neo-Liberals,”) recent events have shown that essentially, when you “hitch up your wagon by loyalty,” you’ve been proven, oh so wrong! Chris is one to reckon with and, if enough is not learned (with all due respect w/Dr. Reich’s friendship to the Clintons,) “discretion will be a better part of Valor.” Kudos to Mr. Chris Hedges.
Jill Stein ❤ you have my support!
vote Jill/Baraka 2016
Great to see this in retrospect!!!
Awesome interview by Chris Hedges. I don’t like Robert Reich’s take here to just bit your tongue and vote lesser of two evils. That’s why we have and will always have a two party duopoly.
Voting for lessor corruption doesn't solve the problem of corruption.
Thank you 🙏🏽 Chris Hedges for speaking on our, (the poor, working and middle class) behalf.
they should do a repeat of this debate after Bernies capitulation, I would love to see if Reich still holds the same view
I'm sure Reich's views havent changed, he is probably retired in a very expensive beach home paid for by the good graces he held on to in 2016 and 2020 primaries.
He was out in 2020 to shit all over Yang's UBI, I do remember that
chris exposes the hypocracsy of robert
Right on, Chris. Thanks.
it took us 4 years, but here we are again. LETS DO IT
I almost forgot to watch this today
Chris Hedges was so on point describing the created fear politics by Democrats & Republicans versus creating policies that work best to serve the country of the USA and its people and our constitution. Instead of stripping the country of our Bill of Rights and Constitutional rights.
Thank you so much Democrazy Now. Look at the quality of people that you bring on. I am grateful for you and for this debate.
The conversation could have been a bit more nuanced: Since I live in New York, I'll vote for Jill Stein. But if I lived in Florida, I would bring a barf bag and vote for Hillary. Granted, there are dozens of states where I wouldn't be sure what to do, and Hedges and Reich framing the question in a universal and moral way allows it to apply to any voter's tactical situation.
Not everyone has that much time to wait, Reich.
Great debate!
Hedges for Pres.
I am registered to the green party. I voted for Bernie during primary. then went to Jill for the general. I'll do the same thing this cycle. Bernie or better. Warren is just a player, we need a leader.
Olórin
Warren is a 🐍
Poland became Americanized but in a more blatant way. The USA had undergone this more than two decades ago but in a "kinder gentler way".
round one for Chris Hedges
great broadcast
Here we are 5 years later and virtually everything Chris Hedges said has been realized, and Robert Reich just endorsed Liz Cheney for president…
This is a vital period in our precioUS and innovative country. I voted for Bernie in the primary and the movement is for real. He should have ran with Jill and take the movement with him...it is sustainable and was growing. Hilary $ouled out and owe$ Wall Street! She lacks vision and if elected president will not innovate but continue the SAMO SAMO system! We mUSt go forward on our strengths in innovations and new ideals for the good of the many not jU$t the few!
Chris chopped him into tiny little pieces
Stein got my vote last time around. If she can climb in the polls, to the point she can beat Shillary, I may throw her it this time also. But currently on the Trump train. Dealt with an actor in the 80's. Will deal with Trump now. Nothings is bad as another Clinton/Bush in office.
Hedges in beast mode
Disappointed in Reich for approaching the vote in November without any nuance whatsoever. Those who don't like Clinton but could never support Trump can vote for Stein or Johnson if they don't live in swing states. And guess what? Most people don't live in swing states.
Chris tells it like it is! He's right!
I'm with Chris
Goddamn, I'm seeing this for the first time, and Chris cannot get the truth out of his mouth fast enough! And poor Bob Reich; I'd like to think he's genuine and just overly-optimistic in the process. Sorry, I can't hate the guy.
I'm no intellectual but I had Hillary figured out in short order. I didn't need 50 years.
Tells you all you really need to know about Reich. Just another player in the game
They still do not have his email list wow👍
Democracy Now should be renamed to Oligarchy Now. It would be at leased politically correct.
Reich says we need to think long-term when he is the one who's thinking short-term. It's Chris who's thinking long-term when he says vote blue no matter who doesn't work. Reich also said that Hillary is a product of neoliberalism but then turns around and says she'll make a great President. Which is it Robert? It can't be both. The one thing Reich did forecast correctly is the appointment of conservative justices to the Supreme Court (Kavanaugh, anyone?) if Trump gets in office.
A two year old could have predicted that the Republicans would put in another conservative justice. Reich has no testicles , and his double speak isn't very good either. Does Reich teach at the day care center at Berkeley ?
Describe this debate: Pessimist vs Optimist. :)
Thank you Chris...
I agree
We keep pushing the very needed third party to the next election.
Wasn't this uploaded last week?
Voting for Jill Stein this year because I have heard everything Robert Reich said repeated every single election cycle. No more voting for the lesser evil; this time I am voting for the greater good.
Catatonic in 2016 and still catatonic in 2020.
I wonder. Does Reich endorse Biden now? Maybe we can work for a third party in 2024, 2028?
Slow down, to quote Reich "at this point in time I just dont see any alternative"! Let's just elect a shitty neoliberal, I'm sure in 2024 it will be better.
Hedges! Such an accurate assessment of our political/societal situation. Hedges for president!
Robert Reich is supporting Liz Cheney now. Case closed.
I hope this time Hillary will not rigge it even if Jill Stein wins 99.9%....
watching this now in 2019 and Chris Hedges is right on Spot!!! 2020 Bernie!!! Bernie better not back off this time!!
:'(
Weekend @ Bernies' did it again Reich is so full of it by not walking his talk! ...
Reich is a good man but just can't make the leap. Perhaps unconsciously he holds back because like many others, the true reality is just to horrible to contemplate. That is why Chris Hedges is so important...he is uncompromising and tells the truth to power no matter the consequences. His is a dark dark view of the world. Too bad he can back up everything he says. Things are just that bad.
Funny, I haven't heard Robert Reich trying to build a third party since Biden was inaugurated.
*There's never going to be a good time to start voting for real change. Trump getting in is not the worst thing that can happen. If the price of starting the engine of actual systemic change is a single trump term.. then that is what it takes*
Besides judges and Justices, what permanent harm has Trump done to our country? We can rebuild and even override his flimsy pillars of power if we really stand up and fight back.
Jill Stein for president
Ranked Choice Voting will fix this.
Begin voting on principle and principle alone.
Robert Reich is neither a progressive nor an intellectual, but a mediocre advertising executive. The contrast with Chris Hedges perfectly makes the point of what our current culture is defined by: advertising bullshit
A coalition form of government would stop the culture of personality trend in the US
Hillary fixed the primaries what do you think she's going to do to the general
Chris was right!
Hey Robert you can't have it both ways.
7:45- Amy Goodman she could not help herself as she helps Mr. Reich "remember"
Reich consciously or unconsciously is doing the bidding of the corporate oligarchy He doesn’t see the undemocractic nature of the corporate state
I will never vote for HRC, I'm voting for Jill Stein, I urge everyone to not allow this culture of fear and despair to continue, vote the candidate who shares your values, it's time, to stop the madness!!
Hedges is dead on destroys shit sak clinton barker reich.
how does it feel Mr. Reich to be bought
Go be dumb somewhere else.
is Mr. Hedges dumb- dummy
marty mart Nope, just you.
I would like to make a Donation to the Hildabeast campaign for a bag of cement she needs some new shoes 👠 lol 😝
This conversation didn't age well.
this conversation proves how all that we see is in the eye of the beholder (we each give it our own meaning). the same situation is interpreted in a very different ways by two different people. Then add the viewers and our individual, unique points of view. What is the Truth here? just a little existentialism for ya in the middle of the apparent tempest
Chris Hedges, is about surgically fixing the system.
Robert Reich, is about applying a bandaid.
Does Chris Hedges sound passionate? Usually when I listen to him, it makes me sad because he sounds so hopelessly defeated all the time. I almost feel like we can fight it, listening to him now.
He can be a little unforgiving sometimes though...
Chris Hedges pwned this debate!
I respect Robert but Chris is the real deal.
13:40 ....ding, ding, ding!
I'm mobilized and organized to vote for Dr Jill. Stop the insanity VOTE GREEN!
I like both Chris hedges and Robert Reich I think they both bring a lot to the left they are both true lefty’s they just have some different points of view and they are both very good writers and there books are a must read and very educational so I have no problem with ether man
Cmon Robert you are too modest we all know you are the single most functional economic driving force behind positive economic change inthe last ccouple decades.
