One that instantly came to mind is 'Hamburger Lady' by Throbbing Gristle, about a woman horrifically burned in some kind of accident, everything about it is super unnerving to listen to and there's a high pitched alarm that goes on and off through the whole song.
There's also 'Suffer little children' by The Smiths, which is about the moors murders. It's more depressing than disturbing, but it involves the murder of children, a real case too.
Another song that's probably the least disturbing is 'just wait till next year' by John Maus, which is pretty much about having a stalker level obsession with a woman. It's mainly just the overall theme and a couple of lyrics are pretty full on

I know what Glass Animals is doing currently is very different but oh boy are some of the older songs interesting. One song that's somewhat disturbing is written from the perspective of a meth addict who's woken up someplace unfamiliar with the ever growing feeling that she had been very violent and had possibly killed someone while she was blacked out on her last binge. The song is called , "Mama's Gun" It gets crazier when you remember every song on "How To Be A Human Being" is a true story told to them by random people they met while touring.

I don’t know if she’s on the iceberg, but Nicole Dollanganger should definitely be here. Not only does she sort of romanticize the topics that she sings in her songs (EDs, abuse, r*pe, etc), but it’s just even creepier with her sweet like voice. While mentioning her isn’t that much of a trigger for me, it’s her music that will make me go into a full blown panic attack. I genuinely do not recommend listening to her music if you’re not in the right mindset. It was one of her unreleased songs, so it not really as well known. I really appreciate that you go over each song but also voice being uncomfortable. So many people reviewing these songs act like they're so tough and that if you get disturbed by one of these songs you're a wuss. I think the whole point to music is to induce feelings in the listener so if one acts desensitized it's hard to take ones opinion seriously since they are not truly feeling what is attempting to be conveyed. Fantastic video !

‘The Mariners Revenge’ by The Decemberists
The whole concept of it is a guy searching for a man who left his widowed mother after his gambling addiction causing them to lose their home and his mother to lose her mind
On her death bed she tells her son to find the man and torture him. So he goes on a journey. And he found the mans whereabouts by ovehearing he was known for wanton cruelty, and the next day he goes to sea with a privateer
After over a year at sea, he finds the man and as he prepared to shoot the man, both ships were taken down and consumed by a whale. Almost everyone except the two died

Listening to A Day in the Life as a kid, I have been both scared by the transitions and pleased by the beaty of the general song, that felt super trippy in the age of 6-7 (and Revolution 9 was even trippier). I found it just many years later after the burning memory about that musical discovery have casually floated to the surface from deeps of early childhood memories, and I had to dig through a lot of old cassetes (which luckily are still nearby) until I have found a needed album. Felt a strong flashback, but it wasn't nearly as trippy as it felt that time I firstly witnessed it, and sadly it was later quickly weakened in the mind by listening a couple of times.

Concubine's probably on here due to the sound. Earlier Converge had these tortured and painful screams combined with their extreme mathcore sound, and the album Jane Doe is a perfect example of chaotic hardcore. It's a revolutionary album, and if you can enjoy metal in a very raw and chaotic manner, it's absolutely mind blowing. Also, fun fact, one of the members was invited to give a talk at Berklee about the creation of the album because of how much one of the professors loved it. It's a metal album music nerds who don't like metal geek out over.

I saw it recommended on a hot Reddit thread for disturbing music and I was hooked by the person's description of it with just how absolutely dark it is, even for me and this is the type of thing I live for. It's a haunting, violent auditory experience.
Also, since Swans showed up, I'd want to nominate Stay Here from their first album. My favorite description of it that I've heard is that it sounds like being beaten to death with a rusty shovel. It's so oddly specific that it's kind of funny with how it fits.

    Regarding that Aileen Wuornos song:
Pretty much all killers, people who r word’s and like dictators and such (with some exceptions probably) have difficult upbringings or unfortunate series of events happen in their youth. It doesn’t excuse their actions as some people who had difficult or precarious situations in their lives grew up to be normal or functional but it explains it at least in part. We can always have compassion for them as they have to be suffering at some level to do this stuff and still have them face some justice. One doesn’t exclude the other. Great video, keep it up!

  • @scrumpcity
    @scrumpcity Před 2 lety +7

to talk some more about varg: he was also heavily involved with the band mayhem, even being their bassist for a really really short period. Varg didn't kill in self defense, there was a joke made that this guy was going to kill varg because he was in jail and they were all scared he was gonna snitch on all of them and varg was also mad at this guy for trying to be more Norwegian metal than him (even though the guy he killed literally created the genre), its all really complicated. There's a lot about mayhem too, if you're interested in stuff like that I really recommend looking into it. he was also like a pretty big neo nazi although he heavily denies it now. The music is pretty dope, but a lot of the guys in that scene (at least at the time of Varg, two of the original mayhem members are still active and they're pretty cool people) are literally the worst people ever

happy birthday and under the stairs by the birthday massacre would fit great on this list. happy birthday is an eerie, soothing instrumentally song which lyrics are all about how the narrator murdered people alongside their friends at a birthday party which had been hosted by one of them. this song also mentions recording the murders, possibly creating a snuff film. under the stairs is a happy sounding song; when i first started listening to the band, i even put it in my “good mood” playlist. the lyrics follow a narrator who is planning to commit suicide, and it’s almost like a letter to those who wronged them. they include a lyric that could imply this narrator wants these people to find the body.
i will now present some lyrics from both songs-
    happy birthday:
“i think my friend said stick it in the back of her head,
i think my friend said ‘two of them are sisters,’
‘you’re a murder tramp, murder tramp,’ i think i said,
‘i’m gonna bash them in, bash them in,’ i think he said”
“i think my friend said, ‘don’t forget the video,’
i think my friend said, ‘don’t forget to smile,’
‘you’re a murder tramp, murder tramp,’ i think he said,
‘you’re a murder boy, birthday boy,’ i think i said”
    under the stairs:
    “it’s such a shame,
that you won’t be laughing when i’m dead”
“you are gonna be sorry when i’m dead,
under the stairs where no one cares i’m dead,
that is where i’ll wait for you”
though TBM isn’t exactly goth - they have goth elements to their music, but still aren’t considered the genre - lots of goth music, especially darkwave and post-punk, have disturbing lyrics or elements to them. you should check out switchblade symphony, they definitely make some creepy shit, in my opinion.
