This is the best demo of the 3DSS that I have seen anywhere on the interwebs. You make it look actually appealing.
Nice coverage Josh! I really like the contour and notch graphic representation so you can see where in the passband you are effecting the sound.

This rig has a lot of good wins going for it. The hybrid front end is awesome in strong signal conditions, you get the SDR/DSP benefits with the benefits of a superhet front end.
The rig (if the manual is correct) allows for 0-4kHz transmit width, and 3 band parametric EQ as well as three ways to feed audio, mic jack, RTTY/Data line level and USB for digital path. These are all great features for people who like to work on their audio.
The EQ has two settings per mode, so AM and SSB can have two separate audio setups each, you can set up one way for quiet conditions and another for DX/noisy conditions...easily toggled.
The receive audio appears to be good and wide as well, another big bonus for those who like ESSB.
The receiver itself seems to measure up very close to the 101 series which is very impressive at the price point. If Flex hadn't doped the evaluation with Sherwood, this would be the #2 rig on the list right now. Incredible value for the price.
The external monitor display connection is another differentiator for the price. Yaesu did a great job with this one.

Really nice rig, with a lot of functions for that cost. My first HF rig was a preowned ft-991. Love it. Connected to an SDRPlay and controlled via Omnirig. I was considering the IC-7300, but got the ft-991 for $700 with box everything. Too good to pass up.
And wow...5 or 6 on the DNR. I rarely ever go above 4, mainly set to 3

I remember my dad taking a chance and buying a hybrid radio, and it was probably one of the best selling radios of all times. Yes it was another Yaesu radio in which I still have. I am talking about the Yaesu FT 101 series, which I have the E model. LOL I just actually bought the FTX 10, I am waiting for it to come in.

Thanks for the video. Good stuff here. I just got my hands on the FTdx10 today. So far I relly like it and found it fairly easy so far but I need to de a deep dive on the menus. I started my HF adventure with a Kenwood TS590SG which is a great radio but I wanted something with a scope and this is what I decided I wanted. Love it.
Thsnks for the tip on using the attenuator in combination with a preamp on 40m BTW. That's something I never thought of trying on my FT-891. Fun times tonight when the QRM noise floor climbs, seeing if various things help me to hear people. I'll definitely try this.
Number 3 Sherwood baby! I sold my K3 and got this and am very happy. That’s high praise. The 7300 is great but can’t handle the signals this can. :)
The main problem with going straight from antenna to A/D conversion (Analog to Digital) is ALIASING. Suppose the sample rate is 1 million samples per second, and coming down the wire is a 1.1 megahertz signal. It's waves *almost* synchronize with the sample rate of the A/D converter, such that at each sampling, we are a bit farther along in the cycle of the signal. To the A/D converter, it is a 100 kilohertz signal absolutely indistinguishable from a real 100 kilohertz signal.
It is similar to a double-balanced mixer in a conventional receiver, but instead of sum and difference frequencies, you get only difference.
So you MUST have some sort of filter in front of the A/D converter to prevent aliasing. Because of potential for strong signal overload it helps to have bandpass filters, not just a lowpass filter. This is particularly true for high powered possibly nearby AM broadcast stations. To have them hit the A/D converter would be ungood for your desired signal.
It’s OK Josh… We all make mistakes. You did a good job here. It will be interesting to see what the actual bench test numbers are for this radio. Happy new year.
Love my 101MP. I ran a 7300 for a year or so and it is a great bang-for-the-buck radio. But after using the 101 for a couple of months, I am a big believer in the hybrid approach, at least how it is implemented in the 101. If the 10 is anywhere near the same performance, it'll be my backup/portable choice for a 100W radio, ymmv. The audio on the 101 is non-fatiguing (contour control FTW) and the stock mic gets great audio reports. Agree that most modern radios are very good, but there are differences in both operating ergonomics and rx/tx performance.

I use a K3S in my shack, have been not active for 4 years nw, I was looking for radio to use in my camper, It will be a Ftdx10!
The Icom IC-7300 and the Yaesu FTDX10 are not in the same category. Several people sold Their IC-7300 here in Europe. On a very busy band, the IC-7300 suffers from front-end overloading. So for heavy dxing and contesting, the radio is no good. QRM fighting is the solution. That's why the hybrid technology is used in those new Yaesu radio's

Nice review Josh. That tuning thing was a bit weird! Read the manual is great advice. In these modern radios there are often 'easter eggs' we miss!
I'm with you on the VFO knob, Josh. In my youth as an SWL I bought a used, consignment Kenwood R-1000 receiver (which to this day I wish I'd kept instead of selling it when I upgraded to an R-5000) and I loved the flywheel effect of its VFO. Give it a fast spin and let go and it would keep on spinning for two or three seconds. It was a great way to jump from the bottom to the top of a band in a hurry. 73.
All i can say is i love my Ftdx10. Its brought anew dimension to the hobby for me. Afterall i nearlly quit ham radio. But with Ft 1200 and Ftdx 10 am back with a bang. Cheers for videos. 73s

One antenna out - no problem, most/many of us use antenna switches already.
Sometime in the last few days I saw a pdf on the ARRL ranking of receiver performance and they also rank the Yaesu FTDX101 top place - (wish I had downloaded it, can't find it now) so I assume it will be like the 7300/7610 thing with the DX10 being very much along the DX101 performance ranking.
For those that diss the hybrid SDR concept, please note that the upcoming Elecraft K4 in its highest form will use the same idea for highest performance, and this FTDX10 is dramatically less expensive.

Oh man...just got this radio today. I have to admit, it is remarkably better than the 991. Dont get me wrong, love the 991, and it is in my lineup...but the noise reduction ability of the dx10 is unbelievable. My wife is not easily impressed, and she was blown away. She was impressed with the Heil PRAS on the 991, but the dx10 literally took a signal from white noise to nothing but the tx. Really impressive
Hi, do you recommend the dx10 over the 991 for my first rig? I like that the 991 has VHF and UHF, but not sure if I want an all in one that's good, or a radio that does HF very good. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
@@markgutierrez9295 ….really depends on what you do with your radios. If you spend any significant portion on HF, then the dx10 is definitely a better setup, by far. If you want a good all around radio that is very versatile, then it’s tough to beat the 991. I actually only use my 991 for 2m 70cm. Which is really a shame in a way, but I already had it before the dx10 and I like having an hf backup. Both are great radios, so I would just consider what you want out of it.

Hi Josh, I was at HRO Anaheim last Saturday (field day weekend) and Rob did head to head for me with the 7300, FtDX-10, and FTDX 101D. All sounded great but yes the 101D did work great. Think the FTDX-10 would work for me but think going to save money and when Christmas comes around get 101D.
Working on upgrading my antenna system in the meantime; been using 757GX2 for 30 years.

As always a great review. Considering a IC-7300 or this FTdx10 as a new radio. I am an ICOM fan but might go Yaesu this time. BTW had G90 troubles at Field Day. Froze on FT8 on 40m band and although it was still working, no controls would work. Factory reset and cool down fixed it. K5FIT
K3 killer, that's for sure. And I have to give Yaesu credit for having the guts to give this radio a performance that is VERY close to the FTdx101!

Looks quite nice, thanks for the review...better check the linear output that keys the the amp though. I have an FT-991A I bought a year ago and the amp keying output was shorted to ground right out of the box. Did not know it until I recently purchased an amp. Factory says 5 weeks turn around on the repair after they receive the rig. I do love the FT-991 though. Nice radio.
I am all for the front-end filtering. I’ve seen how good Yaesu did with the filters in the FT-847 after putting an SDR Play tap in it. There’s no reason for any receiver to have a huge amount of spectrum feeding it, unless you need the bandwidth for a particular mode or using multiple receivers/tuners, as you can do with the SDR software. But if I’m using the radio to work a 3KHz or narrower signal, I don’t need my front-end exposed to much more than that. I believe the 101 has a tuning variable front-end, but I might be wrong. Having the front-end filtered prevents desensitization, compression, intermod and the like when a strong signal shows up in its passband. That’s not desirable when you have a neighbor, or working field day! Despite the headroom on the SDR, just look what invoking the high-pass filter for blocking AM broadcast, or the stop band filter for FM does to the noise floor of your SDR. This is the same principle. I’m not so much worried about the loss in the filtering, but rather the induced noise. Yaesu knows what they are doing, and I’ll bet the specifications will show it to be very good.
I have my FT-847 set up remotely. The VHF/UHF antenna is 420’ above ground. I work people simplex every day 60+ miles from me with 25 watts out of the transmitter and no preamp on the receiver. In the Chicago suburbs, I get no Intermod on VHF at all, and only occasionally on UHF. Whenever I get out of the ham bands and into the general coverage wideband filtering, the intermod is terrible because of the broadness of the filter.
I’m sure impressed with this new rig, and bring a proud owner of an IC-7300, I can’t wait to get one of these! I love the interconnections, especially the external DVI monitor. Though, they should have made that HDMI, but I can convert! I’m also a fan of the 3D screen, it reminds me of the SETI project software!
Blocking AM and FM from getting to any sdr dongle makes a huge difference like day and night! Yaesu figured it right with ftdx10 and ftdx101

DNF adds a fair bit of distortion on mine. The NB also does. The DNR works pretty good up to setting 3 or 4.

So just give me the Icom 7300.
Josh in a conventional SDR radio the input to the a/d cannot handle all of the signals that it often sees simultaneously especially since some of those levels can be very high. This causes intermod and overload. Superhet prior to the input is desirable especially as the sunspot cycle improves and additionally large antennas can really cause too much signal level.
It is a proven fact that reducing unwanted energy to the input of any sdr is the desirable way. The best receiver in my Shack uses this scheme as well and is by far the most amazing. During a contest where bands are packed with hundreds of very adjacent high level signals one often hears splatter which we often blame on the "other guy" I can tell you that I have proven that more often then not, this splatter is caused by overload and subsequently intermod at the a/d receiver input.
The radio of preference in my Shack does have low mixer noise, high dynamic range mixer, then SDR and then consequently less chance of overload. I can tell you the difference is huge. The benchmark model I am referring to is the Rohde & Schwarz XK4100. In summary it is always better to have a Superhet scheme before the a/d. Please have a look at my antennas on qrz in order to understand what does not work well under my conditions. My flex and 7300 require constant attenuation, many other radios that you wouldn't expect as well have trouble during crowded bands at my site. The limitation is not signal loss prior to digitisation - the limitation (and the reason you don't have an ADC connected to the antenna) is the limited SFDR in a wideband, high samplerate ADC.
The amount of spurs would make for a bad system - that's one of the main reasons to still use an analog RF and IF. Moreover, for HF bands no more than a few 100kHz BW is needed if you wanted to digitise the entire band for spectrum monitoring.

Thanks for the video. To reduce flicker, you might try a neutral density filter on the camera lens to increase exposure time.
Gees I just got the FTDX101MP a while back and I have a FTDX5000MP sitting on the bench collecting dust, I am thinking of selling. I also have the 991A sitting on the radio bench next tp my ICOM 9700. Then there is the K3 collecting dust and the 706 on the shelf... I think I will take a rest on getting more equipment for a while.. First cleanout the shack on radios I am not using and then maybe get the tower and beams going.. Oh ya those who have the FTDX5000MP and looking at the FTDX101MP, you won't gain anything on the receiver or transmit, I would say as a user the only difference is the touch screen.. KB6DX

Just wanted to mention that the FTdx10 is now on mentioned Sherwood testing table, so you don't have to guess at how good it is.
I like this mounted on my backpack, LiPo, mini-loaded Hexbeam attached to one of the backpack frame rails, surprising the EU contacts made while getting in my 2hrs of daily walking.

Likewise, I have a FTdx-101MP sitting right next to a near perfect, but almost 30 year old, FT-1000. I think the FTdx-10 might be for the person who would buy a 991A but is and wants a better HF receiver and doesn't mind not 2M and 70CM in the same box. That would describe me as I have an FT-897A (that's going to get sold) and have never used its 2M or 70cm capabilities. The FTdx10 and 991A are about the same size and I'm thinking of doing a POTA activation or 2 with it.
Thank you for the review. I've had my ticket for a while, but just rekindled my interest in the hobby a year and a half ago and upgraded my ticket almost a year ago. I've eased into HF right after that, only using phone, no other modes.
I'm looking to drop some coin on a new HF rig and checking out the current race between the 7300 & FTDX10. My question is, does the radio have capability of being controlled by an actual computer, OR, is it just hooking a monitor and keyboard to the back of the radio? If control is capable of a computer, is it worth it? What's options are required?

Seems strange to only have 1 antenna input. Also, no network port, you have to buy an external box. I think on the FT-DX 101 you also have to buy the external network interface. Looks like another great radio.
I agree, it has always seemed strange to me that affordable radio's only have 1 antenna input. The only ones i have seen with 2 antenna inputs are those with dual transmitters/receivers which are all 2X the price like your IC7610. same for an Ethernet port, 2X the price. not sure what a lan connection is good for anyway except remote operation. maybe the usb can provide what a lan port does

Two years later and I finally bought one to replace my 23 year old FT-840. Absolutely incredible how far technology has come in 2 decades. I couldn’t have even conceived of anything like this when I started in the hobby 25 years ago. You kinda missed the mark since it’s #3 on Sherwood and actually should be #2 since the Flex 6700 was based on the production model, and not what was finally released in the consumer version which used different components to keep costs down and margins up.

Could you please help me with something. I have been searching everywhere to see if the ftdx 10 has the VC tuner in it like ftdx 101D has. It is the VC-tuner that makes the 101D so fabulous and everybody wants it. They say the little brother 10 edition it’s also good at tuning in a station I cannot find any picture that shows the VC-tuner on the ftdx 10 Version. Do you know anything about this could you help me please
Nice review. Quite a radio but I think I'll keep my IC-7300. The 7300 is just a few steps simpler yet still has some of the same features. Price also matters.
I think it has 4m as well for us across the pond. Also, I'm sure it's probably already been corrected but, FPGA stands for "Field-programmable gate ARRAY" you nearly got it right lol. Meh, who cares, right.

Andy, I have the 5000MP and am currently awaiting delivery of the DX-101MP. But the 5000MP is not going anywhere. I am using an LP-Pan 2 pan adapter with the 5000 to give me on screen signals, waterfall and point and click functionality. If you don't need the 2nd receiver or the extra power, then maybe the DX-10 is for you. One thing I love about the 5000 is everything I need to do is right in front of me. No menus. I'm not counting the 1 time set it and forget it menus.

Well, Yaesu will NEVER understand, that HAMs need a power TUNE botton (zero beat and one push only) to set up PAs ore Antenna Kuppler.
Sure you can select it on the CS botten, but it don't tune, you have to go at CW ore FM mode.
You will find this tune butten "PF" - also with adjustable output power at ZERO BEAT - on all new Kenwood Radios.

Yeah. That irks me too. I have the CS button on an FT450 set up to drop to 10W and send carrier. That works great with the external auto-ATU I have. The built-in ATU on the 450 and on this, works for up to 3:1 VSWR - so an extern ATU is good for dragging antennas over wider frequency ranges and so on. FTDX10 looks great, has great performance, and would be a huge step forward for me. It's a pity that left that one simple thing out.
Do you have to use that display, or can you switch to the typical waterfall like the Icom's Kenwood etc .....

Can’t compare a hi end receiver to a mid level Rx Robert. The 7300 is great low cost SDR but you won’t pull you contact away from a 1k spaced signal. This dx10 will separate those adjoining signal and give you ability to hear. Listen to the 7300 in a contest environment. You ll give up and move on or just won’t pull the signal out. Noise on 7300 in suburbs is s7 on this rig will be s3/4 on the same antenna. Imho 😉 KC3ONO

i have a 7300 and just bought this yaesu ftdx 10 and to be honest i love it the receive is amazing compared to the 7300 mind you i would love to try the yaesu ftdx 101 just to see what its like 73
