The Mad Max Movie, V8 Interceptor which is also known as a Pursuit Special, is driven by Max Rockatansky
The Last of the V8 Interceptors, also known as a "Pursuit Special" (although it is only briefly called by this name by the radio voice of the female dispatcher in the film) was built to convince Max to stay on the force but was instead used to carry out his vengeance.
In 1976, film makers Bryon Kennedy and George Miller began pre-production on Mad Max. Byron Kennedy and George Miller had budgeted $350,000 for their film, including a mere $20,000 for props and vehicles, and a paltry $5000 to keep those vehicles on the road. The climax of the film was to feature a super-hot pursuit car, known at this point only as the Pursuit Special. A year later, funding in hand, work commenced on the cars. The task of designing the Pursuit Special was given to the movie's art director - Jon Dowding. The initial designs for the feature car were highly stylized and futuristic, with spoilers to the roof and boot, flares on the wheel arches, and a modified front end. The original design was based on a modified Ford Mustang, and for a brief moment that is what Max was going to drive.
Murray Smith was hired early on as the film's main mechanic and part of the film crew responsible for servicing and modifying vehicles, including the V8 Interceptor. His opinion on using a foreign Mustang was that it would be difficult to find parts for that car and it had to be functional enough to perform high speed stunts. It was almost certain that repairs would be required and the foreign Mustang would be too much for this low-budget production so it was decided that Australian Fords would be used instead. It was the height of the van craze in Australia and the production crew spotted Monza front ends for Holdens which could be modified to fit the Ford Falcon and achieve the look they were aiming for.
Next stop was a car auction in Frankston, Vic. Three Australian exclusive cars were purchased for less than $20,000 - two ex-Victorian police Ford Falcon V8 XB sedans and a white 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT coupe that’d been repossessed in the Dandenong area. The sedans became Big Bopper and Max’s Yellow Interceptor, while the GT would become Max's Pursuit Special
The donor vehicle
The 'soon to be' black Interceptor started its life in November 1973 as the Ford Falcon XB GT hardtop in Polar White. The vehicle was ordered by Rural Motors in Orange, NSW. The car's VIN reveals that the vehicle came with a 351ci Cleveland V8 engine. It had black vinyl interior, a two-tone (white and black) bonnet, laminated windscreen and the ubiquitous optioned seatbelts. It was one of the last 86 imported big-port US 4V engined/top loader-equipped GT hardtops built by Ford Australia. Only six of these were in Polar White.
As an Aussie this blows my mind to see this interceptor so far from it’s natural habitat it’s not funny! And it’s bloody well awesome to see
The most badass car ever. Nothing comes close.
as you siad!
Coolest car ever hands down. Looks like something Darth Vader would drive.
I've offered a kyber crystal in exchange but haven't heard back. If there is no response, I might pay a visit to your solar system. Expect no wasteland if the offer is not taken.
Persuit Special is what I have insisted that this beauty is. It matters not though, Interceptor, what ever.. it's The Duck's Guts.
You can shut the gate on this one Max, it's the duck's guts.....
The last of the V8 interceptors...... it's kind of nice to see it blowing up!!!
This car is really awesome looking! Total bad ass! Kudos to the designer of this fantastic ride. What a show stopper. 😎
Some years later B&M did come out with a part time operated Blower that was equipped with a bypass system for the blower to work with it engaged or disingaged while the engine is running. But when mad Max was on I sent a letter in to BNN and asked him a question about it and they wrote back and said that was only in the movies that it was not real. I wish to this day that I had kept that letter. I should’ve kept it and had it framed.
i read in hot rod mag years ago that the clutch on the blower could not handle it.
Funny, my 1999 slk 230 has a clutch on the m62.
That car is bad-ass !! A job well done sir !!! 😎👍
The last few year of the Falcon in both the FG and FGX series leading up to October 2016 when the final Falcon was built ran three engines ..The N/A 4.0 litre DOHC inline 6 Barra and most had the 6 speed ZF sports shift of 6 speed manual ...then the Turbo version of this engine in the XR6 T and FPV models ,,also mostly ZF or manual 6 speeders . Also the amazing quad cam 5.0 litre Supercharged V8 developed in Australia...Beautiful engine and really was supercharged....and goes like a cut cat....
Anybody that has seen MadMax will move over when they see this in their rear veiw mirror
Unless the car is christine 😂
In the US, maybe 20 years ago, I was driving my 1970 muscle car near Marshfield MA. A parade had just broken up. Around the corner comes a yellow MFP Pursuit car and then right behind it, the Interceptor. They were going opposite lanes to me, real slow. As they passed I yelled out of my window "BRONZE! Gonna get YOU!!" and the yellow car flipped on his bubble lights. It was great fun.
As an Aussie, I salute you mate. Well done old chap. Jolly good show 😊
P.S fun fact, I used to walk past the garage where the movie cars were being built on my way to school. Also, it’s always referred to as the Pursuit Special.
That’s an awesome school walk 👍. Pursuit Special, Thanks I will remember that 😎
Bloody hell mate, I wish I had a morning walk like that!!?!
@@MadHax-wt5tl It was an inauspicious looking garage too. As a kid I said to myself, "wow, they look cool!". I think I was only 12 at the time. Of course, nobody was aware these cars would be part of the now iconic "Mad Max". The next time I saw the actual filming car would have been in 1992 at the Birdswood Car Museum in South Australia. Another fun fact, I now live in the suburb of Sunbury (In the State of Victoria, Australia) where the final famous scene of Max taking revenge on the thug by forcing him to chain his ankes, tossing him a hacksaw. That piece of winding road is only about 15 minutes from me and still looks very much the same as it did in 1979.
@@james_tiberius_kirk73 As a kid you got to see the Mad Max garage, and now you're captain of the Enterprise. That's quite a life you've had.😸
One of the few muscle cars I ever wanted
Beautiful beast of a car.
Whoever owns this is a very lucky person indeed. 👍👌😉
Incredible car and loved the vid! Congrats mate, that is hands down the most impressive tribute Interceptor I've seen 👏🤗 I was fortunate to see the original movie car in Keswick about 20yrs ago and a couple of really nice examples here in Australia (plus a bunch online in the US), but your car is gorgeous! I can only imagine the time and effort that has gone into getting it to such a standard.
Thankyou I appreciate that 👍
Who wouldn't want one of these cars. Just awesome!
Buddy, you nailed it. I hope this goes viral.
Thankyou for your comment. Means a lot to know you liked the video 😎👍
Work of art the coolest movie car ever , the original Mad Max interceptor was built here in Adelaide South Australia 🇦🇺 where I live ! Congratulations
Were the engine's produced in Australia also or were they made in the States and shipped to Australia to be installed in their chassis?
@@dukecraig2402 hi Mate , they were 100% made in Australia 🇦🇺 from 1971 or even 1970 have to Wikipedia, also if you google it you will find out that the ones made in Australia are very strong due to Australia harsh hot weather conditions and Aussie Bathurst racing era that the cars had to Match the ones for sale , as Australian slogan from era tells “ Wins the race on Sunday ,sells the cars on Monday “ from the long historical battle between Ford and Holden so those Australian made 351 Cleveland heads are extremely sort out overseas, also from 1971 ford Australia made and shipped the 351 Cleveland engine to Italy 🇮🇹 to me put in the De Tomaso Pantera over there in Italy , a lot people even in USA 🇺🇸 don’t know that De Tomaso Pantera engines are made in Australia from 1971 onwards. I’ve a 4V heads made in Australia in my 1979 F100 and they are very strong and in Australia they are legendary, the were in our falcons , utes , F100 and Broncos !
@@chocodiledundee1
The Pantera engine's were made in America until 74, the only reason they started sourcing them from Australia is because 74 was the last year the Cleveland plant made them, not because the one's from Australia were made better or anything like that.
I just ask if the engine's for those cars were made there, not for a bunch of nonsense claims, all those engine's were designed and engineered in America, what was made over there was simply copies.
And we've got our share of deserts over here, that claim about hot weather and it supposedly leading to the engine's being made over there be better is one of the most ridiculous I've ever heard, just because you heard someone say malarkey like that in a bar doesn't make it true.
Number of American auto plants in Australia, lots.
Number of Australian plants in America, zero.
And by the way, the saying "Race on Sunday sell on Monday" is from America not Australia, you copy us, we don't copy you.
I’ve had a few Mad Max moments in my life and for that I am by.
"it makes you want to watch the movie again doesn't it"? No it makes me want to steal your car.. or go to prison trying
🤣
No it reminds me that those times lie close ahead.
NOW IM GONNA HAVE TO WATCH MAD MAX AGAIN ....ALL OF THEM....AWSONE VID.....AWSOME CAR....SHOULD BUILD THE YELLOW ONE
😂 it does make you want to watch Mad Max movies again 😂. Thankyou
Gotta' hand it to your little treasure, last of the great V8 interceptors.
Been seeing a lot of American Mad Max fans showing off their various post apocalypse creations.
Now here's an English fan, if I'm not mistaken.
I'm so glad us Australians have had such a global impact.
Great tribute. Amazing looking car. I really love the aerial views. Reckon she looks the absolute business looking down from those overhead shots. (post more!)

That was awesome. Loved it. Hey I used that exact road for some drone footage of my camaro on my 1st weston bike night video. It would of been good to get together & he could of chassed me in my Camaro. I know there were no Camaros in Mad Max, but who cares 😄. I absolutely have to meet the owner and see that car. Fairplay to him. That's beyond awesome 👌
I did think about it, but it was getting everyone together. It will be at the cruise of the weather is good this month mate.
@@Dalesvid ok. Can you remind me with a message when that is? I need to see that.
@@Nightcrawler666 I will try to remember 😂👍
Well there is a Holden Monero Pursuit Special in the movie (actually more than a few) and here in the States at Wasteland Weekend same year Chevy Camaros are what a lot of people use to clone the police car the Nightrider (a terminal psychotic) stole in the opening scene of Mad Max....
They are actually quite convincing.
So exciting to see the Interceptor and takes me back to seeing the movie in the theater. I guess if I had the money I'd want one myself.
One of the top five most iconic movie cars ever.
1966 Batmobile
Starsky & Hutch Gran Torino
The General Lee
Mad Max V8 Interceptor
James Bond DB5
And the 1977 Bandit Pontiac Trans Am 6,6 (smokey and the bandit)

Outstanding attention to detail. Superb job.
@@zachallerton1724 Thankyou 👍
Awesome attention to detail, fantastic sound. Bruce Wayne and the older Anakin Skywalker would probably want one, too. The only other filmcar that can compete is (imo) the plain white Challenger in Vanishing point. 🤘😎👍
Thankyou for your comments. I’m so pleased you appreciate the work that have put into the video. I will see if I can get the white Challenger filmed in 2024 👍
The falcon xb.
One of my favorites
Wow. Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed watching it. I think this is the cleanest, most movie accurate one I’ve ever seen. Even the RVS radio - looks like it has a digital readout! The highway 9 sign is a great touch too. Thanks again.
Thank you. It’s nice to hear that you enjoyed watching. This car really has been meticulously built. 👍
@@Dalesvid thank you. May I please ask - do you ever show the car anywhere ? If so I’d love to visit the show and see the car. I visited the car at the ‘car’s the star’ museum that was in Keswick many years ago but it was in my less favourite MM2 guise. I’d love to see your car in the flesh.

Hey man sweet build and nice vid. You actually did some good scouting there too, barring the width (or lack thereof) and greenness, you’ve managed to find some roads that look quite Aussie👍
Thank you, It is hard to find roads that sort of matched in the U.K, I appreciate your support. I spent a lot of time scouting for locations to film and feedback from you guys makes it all worthwhile 👍😎

The worlds most iconic movie car...and it's Aussie. The wheels are not XB GT wheels, they came with Bathurst Globes or twelve slotters. Good to see a Brit own a real car with real power.
The worlds most iconic car is James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger. Also the 66 Batmobile probably trumps this by a touch.
@@robertkees6048 Bond? James f^^^^^^^ Bond? What a joke. A f'ugly car that used a bowler hat as inspiration for its design. Overweight and underpowered and highly unreliable, reminiscent of most British cars I guess. The Batmobile? Over an XB Falcon? What are you, a 10yo?
@@robertkees6048 Bond? James Bond? What a joke. A car that used a bowler hat as inspiration for its design, overweight and underpowered just like most British cars. The Batmobile is appealing only if you are a 10yo
@@Skull-Beneath-The-Skin Like it or not, fair or unfair, the Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5 is the single most iconic movie car in history. And Bowler Hat inspired or not you can't change that. Sorry Charlie.
@@robertkees6048 If you put Max's XB Falcon beside Bonds DB5, more people would recognise Max's as a movie car than Bonds. Guaranteed. And then Max would kick Bonds rrrs.
