  • What makes a band Nintendocore? In this video I create a scientific method to determine just that, and then analyze HORSE the Band, Crystal Castles, Heavy Heavy Low Low, and I Set My Friends on Fire through that lens. Which bands should I test next?

    Hello, tracker user that makes old school grind+PV chiptune here
    I love your music and I love this video very much.
    While it is important for historical accuracy to say that Nintendocore is essentially metalcore plus chips, I am honestly tired of hearing everyone say that Ncore explicitly has to be Metalcore. Like literally using Metalcore as theoretical framework for your scale annoys me!
    Why? I have known about the subgenre since '07, but I always liked Bubblegum Octopus the most. Spazzpop isn't Ncore for sure, but exposure to m@'s music made me love heavy chip bands so damn much. At the same time, I always hated Metalcore, hated the Metalcore dudebros in gym shorts that shared the same high school as me, and still just think that Metalcore isn't the best heavy subgenre.
    When I got re-exposed to Ncore in 2019, I was really hoping that the subgenre would have evolved. Calling anything -core should allow bands to be free to have any type of hardcore punk influence they want. I was disappointed to find you and other Ncore channels saying that Ncore HAS to be Metalcore to be Ncore. I personally do not like the Cybergrind scene that much but I have to go there because they're more accepting of my music than the Nintendocore community is, because I do not make Metalcore influenced music.
    I know my argument is nothing more than a tantrum, just a complaint about a music scene that I have nothing to do with...but again.. if you call yourself "_____-core," you all should honestly start to redefine what it has to sound like to be considered a part of the subgenre. If I'm making grindcore/west coast powerviolence on a tracker, it's heavy and fast, and I'm doing heavy vocals, I really don't see why I can't call myself Nintendocore; yet I can't because "I'm NoT mEtAlCoRe." Honestly bored of all of the modern Nintendo core artists just trying to LARP as their early 2000s predecessors.

    • @Uhole
      @Uhole  Před 2 lety +2

      Hello! First off, thanks so much for the support!
      So, I used metalcore as one of the requirements for what constitutes Nintendocore because Horse the Band are definitely metalcore. My scale is largely based on them, as the creators of the term. That said, since the "core" part of my metric is worth three points total, I would say that anything harsh with screamed vocals is most certainly gonna get two of those points. Heck, I gave Crystal Castles a point for "metalcore" even though they definitely fall pretty far from it. Since a total score of 9/10 is still "true nintendocore" on my scale, a band could earn that rank without ever playing a breakdown, or being strictly metalcore at all. My goal with these videos is definitely not to tell anyone they aren't welcome or that they can't use any certain term. It's just my own metric, so people will know where my ideas are coming from.
      The metalcore dudebros you mentioned isn't really something I experienced myself. I'm sure the scene was different in different places, and I can see how that would be off-putting. Out of curiosity, where have people not been accepting of your music in the Nintendocore community? I'm an active member of both that and cybergrind, and don't recall much gatekeeping, but I'm certain it happens nonetheless. I try to support all kinds of stuff personally. Check out my "Top Ten Nintendocore Albums of 2021" video if you haven't seen it- I shout out tons of things I wouldn't call Nintendocore. :0

      I don't remember how cybergrind came up in this video, but it's basically digital grindcore that's fast and abrasive and intentionally out of the realm of what's possible for real people to play- for example it might have 32nd note blast beats at 300bpm. But like all genres there's tons of variety within it :0
      If that's totally not what you were asking lemme know lol
