Another jamaican born and bred. I'm just devouring this. I do wish the linguistic department had done this in the 50s so that I could properly use written patna.
Hi Shan, love your lessons. I am a Jamaican, born and grow, and I find your lessons interesting. I even learned somethings myself especially the different versions, origin and spelling of Patios. In the Empress response "Nutn naa gwaan ino" does not mean "MY day isn't going well" to me. I have always taken that response as meaning "nothing is happening" and depending on the context means nothing of significance, whether good or bad, is happening - in other words "just another day". Maybe its me but I think the response would have been "Nutn a gwaan ino!" Using "naa" to me would be when you are answering a direct inquire of what is going on and not the greeting form - e.g. question: "Supn a gwaan ova deh?" response: "Nutn naa gwaan ino". I guess regional differences are at play here. lol
Thank you so much for your feedback. I agree with you, it's definitely regional. "nutn naa gwaan ino" means a lot of things. For me it can mean both "my day isn't going well" as well as "nothing is happening".
@6:22 .. if Ras is spell like that then how do you spell the bad word ... Cause one time i writing my teacher asking --- where is Ras .. she think i cussing because i wrote "miss weh di Ras "
Oh here is another one .. true story.. my friend say that instead she twist and braid my hair.. she say she going to ras mi .. umm 😳 so now am confused..
In that case, she means she wants to loc your hair- meaning install dreadlocks. (Because it was originally a hairstyle that only Rastafarians wore. So this use of Ras is short for Rastafarian)

That word is usually spelt “Raas” but some people will also write “ras”. But when spoken they are pronounced very different.
