Jason Isbell is a national treasure. If We Were Vampires is the single greatest love song ever written, because it's not about the soppy, sugary sweet kind of love at the beginning of a relationship, or the intense, fiery passion that everyone sings about.
It's about the quiet, steadfast dedication to that one person for a lifetime, and the knowledge that your time together is made sweeter, more beautiful, and more poignant simply by its finite nature. All love ends. It's the ones that end in the last breath of a long life that are truly, deeply beautiful.

Jason Isbell is a once in a lifetime talent. John Mayer called him the “best lyricist of our generation.”

I rarely ever request Cover Me Up anymore because it almost always starts an argument from the people who somehow think Morgan Walle 's version is better. I will never understand. But that's sad because it's such a beautiful song, the first of his post-Drive By Truckers that ever really grabbed me.

Glad you guys liked them! Poetic and gut check are both great descriptors of a lot of Isbell's songs. Jason is more Americana but in my book that still falls as a sub-genre of country. The beauty of it is you can listen to a JI album and hear a wide variety of styles. Speed Trap Town should definitely be the next one you guys check out! Or maybe Elephant.. 🤔 It's really hard to choose a song. It's easier to tell you which album you should check out first. Lol. The guitar he plays on this song is a Dobrato which is a resonator which may partially explain the different sound. You can see it on his episode of Rig Rundown, if you ever watch that.

There was story about a beautiful young woman who made a pact with the devil. She didn't want to ever get old. So, of course the devil said, (basically) "Sure Missy, I will trade your soul for your eternal life". She stayed young, while all her family including children, grandchildren etc. grew old and died. As time passed, everyone she made friends with grew old and died. Since she was eternally young, as they aged and she didn't, she would have to leave them because it got too weird and obvious. She would have to watch what she said about her life and what she knew about history. Eventually, she was so unhappy, she told the devil to come and take her because her life was so lonely.
