Son festival de théâtre, créé par Jean Vilar en fait, en été, le rendez-vous mondial du théâtre vivant. Compte tenu de la richesse de son histoire, de son patrimoine et de sa vie culturelle intense toute l'année, Avignon a été élue en l'an 2000 Ville européenne de la culture.
