Greenbank synagogue was once centre of the city’s Jewish community.
It has been closed since 2008, it first opened in 1937.
Now it sits abandoned and left to decay

This was my synagogue growing up. The name plates were for members not just for the “more wealthy”. So many lovely happy memories.

@@PartnersOfTheForgottenWorld I can give you a ton of information if you ever want it. Lots of us are still around in different parts of the world with stories to tell. My brother was in the synagogue choir so that small room you went in via the back staircase was actually the choir loft overlooking the whole shul. I’m interested to know how you actually got in!!! Thanks for the video. Such a terrible shame the community dwindled and was forced to close.

so moving, Did you attend the farewell service and when Holy Scrolls got out of temple and when a congregation officer switched off the little light? Concerning the different signs about dedication...they should not perish but rather they would have a respectable place somewhere else, (jew museum, in a partucular place in other hebrew temple) by respectfull attitude for these late persons whoe has a role in the construction and consecration of the temple! I feel so sad and moved by this synagogue! Shalom!

Wow, that was a nostalgic experience. In its heyday it would be completely full on the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Upstairs was the women's area, downstairs the men as the congregation was part of the traditional orthodox movement, but this didn't stop romances flourishing 😉
The basement was a function room for weddings, barmitzvahs etc and the smaller prayer room was used for weekday services with the main area just on the Sabbath and other festivals. It was also used for the children's services to stop them being too noisy in the main space 😂
The cupboard was where the Torah scrolls were kept and would be taken out for readings from the Old Testament in Hebrew. And the raised area in the main body was where the Rabbi and Cantor would sit and lead the service.
It's bizarre seeing what was a genuinely thriving community space just so desolate, but those of us who grew up in Liverpool during the 70s moved away in search of work.
I hope the developers can find a good use for it and not let it fall into further ruin. It was a genuinely nice space to inhabit at its peak.

This was my family's synagogue. My parents were married there and I had my Bat Mitzvah ( confirmation ceremony) there. When I was very young, I used to sit on my Grandfather's knee in the Warden's box. So many memories and so, so sad to see such a beautiful and special building abandoned and descrated with graffiti.

thank you for showing us around this amazing place.

good video and interesting! Concerning furniture/cabinets on stand are always the place for keeping Holy Sacred Rolls of Thora, prophets....texts of the Tanakh (hebrew Bible) An important moment during weekly hebrew sabbath services in when rabbi or other persons got out a roll to read it on the pulpit (called bimah).
It's alway moving for me (protestant) to see an abandoned synagogue exactly as a church because we christians are strongly tied with judaïsm by our common sacred scriptures from Moses, King David, other biblical people ...............
I can imagine when Sacred Rolls got moved out this hebrew temple for ever and when a temple officer switched off the perpetual light nearby the furniture! Probably a sad and very particular last service! Rabbis, cantors standing on the bima platform and conducting prayers, hymns while congregation on the benches was following the service!
Thnx for beautifull video and please could anybody can say me was is (or will be) the future of this synagogue?

I remember a synagogue being featured on a documentary about Liverpool and Nikolaus Pevsner on Channel 5 in 2005, presented by Gavin Stamp. Is this the same synagogue?
