Thanks for this. In fact, I had already imported ffmpeg, which I had been running from a script to create a -mono movie from a stereo movie. But I subsequently found a still more "streamlined" method, which works if your audio interface has two channels.
For about $10, I bought an XLR Y adapter: one XLR female jack branching out to two XLR male plugs. I plug the two males into the two XLR input jacks on my audio interface, then plug the mic XLR cable into the adapter's female jack and set both inputs' volumes to the same value. Then record as normal. This fills both tracks with the signal from the mic.
This is nice because if you are monitoring what you are playing, you hear it in both ears in real time. Of course, if you need the second input on the audio interface for something else, you are out of luck.
I've never used GarageBand and you've now told me enough to get me started with it, so thank you for that.

I have a nice Bluetooth mono headset mic that I wanted my wife to use for real estate walkthroughs, and I couldn't figure out, besides adding hardware adapters, with the extra crackling sounds that more jacks and plugs add, and couldn't figure out a simple way to combine the tracks. Then I find this - a total no brainer. Thank you, Michael.

Great help, even now in 2021. Thank you. I don't know if this was already mentioned to you and your viewer: There is a "complementary" fix for those who also need to monitor the recording in the first place when you are wearing headset for example. If you go through the "Accessibility" settings of your system preferenceseven if you are able to replay your recording with clean left and right balanced mono signal, the file itself still pans the sound to only one side, meaning that if you share the file with others, they will still face the same issue unless they also apply Stereo to Mono in their Accessibility/Audio preferences. Also, once you switch this "Stereo to Mono" option, ALL your media, whether they are from your own files or from CZcams video you are watching, will play in mono as well, and this is certainly not the intention. So my suggestion is a complementary, and temporary fix, limited to monitor the recording properly before applying your solution to the saved file itself. I just thought it was worth mention it. Best to you.
