Terrifying Lion Roar at Lincoln Park Zoo

- 6 year old African Lion Sahar roars at curious human onlookers in Lincoln Park Zoo enclosure. Perhaps he calls out to his lost 18 y/o companion lioness who had to be put down recently due to old age.
I would absolutely NOT want to come across this sound in the wild!

This is heartbreaking! I hope that by this year of 2021 the lions are already in a better enclosure or place.

I work at the zoo right outside the city and I must say that the enclosure Lincoln Park has for their lions and other animals are quite small. Disappointing that a zoo so loved by tourists treats their animals like guinea pigs in such tiny cages. Would love for them to expand their exhibits more.
Wait, that cage is actually all they have? That is unacceptable. I'm guessing they must also have their crocodiles in pools the size of bath tubs.

We should phase out of zoos, even the bigger conservatory ones, and that money and effort should go into protecting their habitat and their organic experience. This is disgusting.

Well most of these lions in captivity are trying to be bread so they can one day be let out into the wild so they can bread in the wild. Also for the time being hearing their roars is Awesome.

The T. rex roar from Jurassic Park is a combination of a tiger 🐅 roar, elephant 🐘 trumpet and a crocodile 🐊 bellow

ꊼᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇsꊼ there is an outside enclosure that is significantly larger and an intermediate for them to avoid the public if they wish. I agree, it would be nice if it was even bigger though!

But the Kovler Lion House at Lincoln Park Zoo will soon undergo a huge renovation. These three lions - male Sahar and lionesses Kamali and Zalika - were recently moved to Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina, Kansas. I remember when these beautiful sisters Kamali and Zalika were born at the Oregon Zoo in 2013. Kamali is the one with the scarring on her left front leg.

I think he was stressed and discomforted by how small this enclosure is. He was pleading to let him and his people out to a BETTER and BIGGER place.

It's sad to see them locked in such tiny enclosures when their instinct is to patrol their territory, protect their females and cubs and maybe, maybe not, help in the hunt.

Two things:
First, that enclosure is WAY too small for lions.
Second, it was sweet that the lioness seemed to come out and see what could be distressing her mate

I invite everyone who has commented on this video to come to the zoo and see where they live now. This habitat has been changed to the cost of $42 million. This video is so out of date. And also, whomever filmed this never went outside to see all the space the lions had out there. He/she walked right by it.
I absolutely walked outside and if you look at some of the comments I pointed out the outdoor habitat. And you are right, it is out of date because the lion in the video sadly passed away in another zoo last year.
The video is about the roar of a lion, not the ethics of zoos.
Hope they have a way bigger part to stay leading to outside. 😥
This is a very small “interior enclosure”. They also have a significantly larger exterior and a private interior area

For anyone who sees this video in the future, know that the Lincoln Park Zoo has nearly quadrupled the space which the lions have to roam. This is no longer what their habitat looks like.

This is just a small interior viewing area. They have a larger inner area and a third much larger outer viewing area.

I hate it that the poor Lions can't get out and run I see big cat sanctuaries where they have acres to run on and they are well taken care of I just wish they could do that for the zoo it's so important that's why they get so restless and they start pacing they need to get out and roam
As someone who studies animal care, that enclosure is way too small. Lions need lots of space to exhibit natural behaviours like chasing food, hiding, playing and sleeping. It’s a little unusual that this lion is roaring, but he’s showing a stereotypical behaviour which is pacing. Pacing normally occurs when an animal is an too small of an enclosure. The roaring is probably distress, but it could also be territorial since there is a lioness. This lion desperately needs a bigger enclosure otherwise it could suffer with psychological problems.
This is the visible interior exhibit. There is a huge outdoor and also a private interior space for the lion. From what I understand, this lion had recently lost his closest lioness to illness.
