A couple pretty big errors on my part though honestly. I knew not tying the walls into the pillars would deduct points but I was worried about not finishing if I tried to do that... And edging the walls and pillars is something I definitely should have done. One of those 2 things may have got us to 1st... But you live and learn, thanks for the support! ✌

Thanks brother! It was really cool sitting down with the judges, gave us a lot of insight into how they look at things. Constructive criticism is very important, they nailed it. Some criticism is just crap, but they explained things in a humble and intelligent way. Great judges and they chose correctly. Can't wait for next year ✌

Awesome guys. I was waiting to see how it unfolded for you guys. 2nd is awesome but next year first place is next. I think what the judge guy said about them understanding what your design is representing is important. Like you said it was a commercial entry way or walk with a common sitting area. Had they known that it gives your work more definition. Either way great job and Im sure it was a lot of fun. I go to all the paver shows around my area and learn alot and meet nice people in the business. No competitions like that though I love that.
Thank you very much and I agree on hearing the reasoning behind the design before judging. That is very important in my opinion. But we had fun either way and 1st place next year is our goal! Glad you enjoyed the competition, that had always been the main reason I go to this show. Super fun to watch and be a part of. ✌

I loved your set up on this. It looked great. When that guy came up on the patio to start talking about a few things and the first thing he went to were those 2 pavers I was like I knew that didn't look right in the last video and it kept sticking out to me like a sore thumb after seeing it put in place in that video. I was hoping you seen it because of the attention to detail you put in all your work, which has me noticing all those details in local patios and other patios I see online.
With everything the judges told you, next year take it to first place.
Thank you, we had a lot of fun! And honestly, I really don't know how I missed that joint line being messed up... I thought I looked everything over pretty good but I guess I missed it.... The time constraint can throw you off your game pretty easily, but that is what I like so much about this competition. It is a different type of challenge than normal job sites and I like challenges. LOL. And that is really cool to me that you are noticing issues with paver projects around you, that is a standard that I hope to keep pushing on the trade. Thanks for your support and I can't wait for next years competition! ✌

I honestly do not know what manufacturer or the name of the block, but yes, they are 4"x8"x12" blocks, forming a 24" pillar. Thank you ✌

Thanks brother! I would be curious also actually... They all told me it was very close, but not sure how close points wise. I was happy with the design we came up with, just should have executed better. I think even if we just put edging around the walls and pillars, that might have given us enough for the win. But you never know... Can't wait until next year! ✌

I had first place in last. Not a lot of creativity in their setup. An old 67 year old pug like me could have done that. Makes me wonder what the politics of the competition are. I clearly had you guys slam dunking a first place finish in this one.
Thanks for the support! Unfortunately those few mistakes I made were big no - no's... They were right about the edging and walls not tying in with the pillars. At the end of the day, they look at what project would be less likely to fall apart over time. The winners installed everything to the standards they judge on. That beat creativity in this situation. ✌

Lmao chipped pavers yet they’re reusing the same pavers and then not giving you a roller compactor or pads to use with the plate compactor
LOL, yea... The compactor they gave us had a nice pad but chipping the edges is always a possibility... They look at everything. ✌

I hear you, but they followed the standards flawlessly. So creativity did not win in the end because of my mistakes with the walls and pillars. ✌
At first I said to myself that yinz got robbed but when the judges broke it down it makes sense. Yinz have to be pumped though for 2nd. Next year will be #1 🫡
I completely agree. Creativeness is not enough when there are structural mistakes. Totally understandable and the judges made the right decision. I was pumped for 2nd and even more pumped for next year! ✌
