I remember I first learned it in kindergarten when I lived in Canberra, my school had this awesome casual "music teacher" who would come in with his guitar and get all us kids to sing along to this and "Bright Eyes" by Art Garfunkel... he seemed to _really_ love those two songs, haha. For years I had no idea who it was by, but the lyrics remained in my head due to my passion for environmental conservation (fostered by this song, Midnight Oil and the music video for Pearl Jam's "Do the Evolution")... it wasn't until 2 years ago, 2½ decades later, that I discovered the actual song. Julian Lennon really deserved more recognition, he wasn't just some nepotism baby coasting through life.
I can actually remember this coming out in the charts at the time. I was about ten years old at the time. Does anyone else find it astonishing that this is now 30 years old? It is scary how quickly time passes isn't it?

I've been saying it for the last few years. I always remember my mother saying to me don't wish your life away, time goes quick as you get older. I used to laugh at her, but do you know what? She was right. I also think that when you was younger, you had more to look forward to, birthdays and Christmas used to feel like it was a million miles away. What father would be disappointed that his son followed in his footsteps? Emulating a parent is the most natural thing in the world. Most parents would be overjoyed. If John Lennon was an Iron Worker and Julian became one too, he'd get a pat on the back and his father would be proud. "Chip off the old block." Great song!
This one of the best songs of the 90's. I'm so sick of the press constantly trying to compare him to John and The Beatles. In one interview he said: "I got people telling me that I shouldn't use cellos in my songs because The Beatles used cellos. Like, what's wrong with these people?!"
Julian was a very deep, profound and talented musician in his own right. He had struggles with his life after the "Help Yourself" album which virtually zucced his recording career after that.
Now he is a very talented photographer and content with his life. Good on him. I'm sure that Cynthia and John would be so proud of him if they were still alive today.

I am not a fan of "children of the stars" attempting to emulate their parents but this guy nails this. It is both a throw back and ahead of its time and I think they should re-release it. Great song beautifully sung.

Julian doesn’t sound like John merely because he got half his chromosomes from John; he sounds like him because he’s studiously copying John. He’s copying John’s vocal styling; he’s copying John’s chord progressions and and accompanimental figuration; he’s copying John’s concern with broadal societal matters (compare this song to John’s more powerful “Isolation”); he’s copying John’s melodic tropes; he’s copying John’s lyrical style. So it’s a bit hypocritical to turn around and complain about being in John’s shadow.
This song is slightly ahead of Imagine for me. but both him and his Dad really got humanity.
Julian is truly a superb writer and singer. I don’t understand why he hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves. Also, a tremendously kind and thoughtful person. In every interview I have seen him in he is so grounded and sweet.

Sadly when Julian Lennon dies (I am 63 so I don’t want to still be here he’s only 58) the first line will I start with “son of John Lennon” when most of us way down the page is your parent’s names. Which is likely to happen to all the Beatles children with the possible exception of Stella McCartney- they will say “Fashion Designer” . Kinda sad to be eclipsed your whole life.

My first child (a son) was born in Scotland in October 1991 and this was in the charts, and I remember thinking back then how much I wanted his world to be a cleaner, safer, and better place for him to grow up in. He's now 31 (32 in a few months), and we're in far worst shape than we have ever been. I now live in America and climate change (like most things) has been politicized. We are so damned. Time to re-release this record, dear Julian. You always were ahead of your time. xo

In April, 2020 , in a pandemic spanning the world.
Never, in the history of ever, has this song been more apropos.
Since this started and the world has been essentially shut down, the LARGEST, most congested cities in the world have seen a dramatic reduction in air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution.
People are seeing stars for the first time in decades, they can see a TRUE blue sky.
People hear the joyful song of birds where there were none
People watching dolphins and many OTHER sea creatures in the canals of Venice!
Our Mother CAN heal herself! She already is.
Until the factories and the vehicles and the constant lust for more gets turned back on.
Why can't we be happy with enough?
Why do we constantly lust for more?
Our planet's oceans, beaches , waterfronts are littered with cheap plastic crap:
Everything from dish drainers to laundry baskets, Shampoo, body wash, lotion and hand soap dispensers to old tooth brushes.
Our need to be "clean and fresh" has created the filthiest conditions for all other life.
I could go on with this but I hope you get the point. We are NOT the only life on THIS planet.
Please, take the time during this lockdown to truly THINK about how you use things and how you could change your thinking and use less, waste less, want less cheap plastic trinkets, instead, purchasing stuff in glass that can be EASILY recycled/upcycled.
Try to buy things made IN your own country to help slow the use of so many pollution belching forms of transportation. Encourage companies to start producing locally.
There are so many things we can do.
I've said these things for over 40 years. This is nothing new.
Perhaps now, our minds are more open to changing the way we do things.
Not a Green New Deal.
Just common sense and realistic environmentalism.
We can change the world
We have to start by changing our minds.

Patti Simmons I love and totally agree with your sentiment, I really do hope this pandemic changes people’s views about life and care for each other, wildlife and the environment more. But I fear greed will still be at the forefront and people will soon forget the cruel and savage way we humans are. Nature has warned us ...... next time it could be even worse!

I still will hold on to the belief some have and together we can create a change that helps everyone and our earth too. Because Mark, you're right, the next time could be much worse. Look at what they did to people who just wanted to make things better, for everyone. I'd love to run. I'd love to have YOU run! I think getting rid of the ones who are doing things now is important and that REAL PEOPLE should be there with REAL HEARTS who can SEE what's actually going on and have REAL ideas/solutions to change things; without fear, without subjugation, without wanting to rule like tyrants.
Most importantly though, without lying.

Beautiful comment, but after reading this... I wonder... How can there be people who disagree with this? How is that possible? Why are there so many ''bad'' people in the world? I can't comprehend it. Where they born that way? Why are they selfish? Do they only think about money because of some kind of trauma? Do they hate nature and other people? I genuinely do not understand.
The Children aged 7 and 8 at my Sons school recently sang this to the parents, pretty much had everyone in tears, such a well written song.
My life was falling apart, literally, in '91, I never heard this! Nor did I see the video.
Hearing this now.. I am in tears. Is it possible Julian is THIS CLOSE to what we NEED TODAY!!?? Every day I wonder HOW close to the actual end we are, each of us and collectively, to the end?!? How is it possible that nobody saw and heard this when it was first out?! So many things conspired to keep me away from this song and many other things which have only been revealed to me in the past 30 years.
Shame on whomever caused Julian to stop his wonderous gift of being able to read his surroundings to such a depth. As an accomplished songwriter myself, I consider this to be BETTER than any of John's compositions (with the possible exception of "Dream #9").
This beautiful song is surely the greatest show of love that Julian has ever bestowed upon his father. What a lovely tribute and song.

I remember singing this in primary school and really loving it, and today 15+ years later it still comes back to me.
Yes, the obvious reaction will be " He is so much like his father". And ofcourse, he looks a bit like his father (not that strange ofcourse), his voice and way of singing sounds like John, and then also the music has great influences of his fathers work.
But, I think we should not forget this is Julian, and this is HIS work, and it seems like people do overlook that fact. He deserves more appriciation for that fact and his talent, instead of only the comparison to his dad. Julian is a brilliant songwriter himself !
