I find it a lot easier to see eggs on black foundation versus yellow or white. For newer beekeepers or those with less than perfect vision, black is the way to go for brood foundation.

I was about to shoot a video on treating my Apimaye hives with OA and was going to stress the importance of Safety and making sure you get a good filter for your respirator but…. I didn’t have the full face mask and after listening to your video, I am now adding it as a must have!! Thanks again for doing what you do….

Foundations: I use black for brood frames as it’s easier to see eggs. I use white for honey frames as it’s easier to see the honey color.
Here in SE coastal VA it’s been in the 90’s and the bees are going CRAZY on spearmint, catnip and mimosa. There’s white clover everywhere but the mint right now is the star. 100 acres of cotton is right down the road, less than a mile, so the Flow supers are gonna be stuffed full by august. Keeping an eye out for the earliest goldenrod. It’s been a great honey year! Thanks for the videos! See ya in January at the Expo!

Just had a chance to watch Friday's video. I had to laugh when Fred said he was beyond 42 hives and he didn't want that. I seem to remember a time when Fred said that 19 hives was his limit! It is hard to keep the line on a hive limit. I give hives away to stay at my city limit of 2 hives.
I've given away lots of swarms and colonies just to stay "small" and it's still not working. BUT, it could be worse, at least they are healthy and doing well. My stock also seems to do well for the recipients, so that's also promising being that I'm not a breeder.
@@FrederickDunn I try to keep "my bees" in the area. I like the Buckfast breed and hope that by doing this my virgin queens can breed with good stock. HEY, I can dream! As long as the traits kind of stay the same I'll be happy. No guarantees.

Sweet clover takes 2 years but worth it. Borage is great but I needed to use tomato cages to allow them to stand tall. Bees on it all the time.

I would (personally) disagree :
Bees do show if they are : HAPPY or Unhappy (!)
They definitely have Emotions.
Like I've commented before,
I tend to 'not allow random' Hive Swarming, and do " active Hive Bee Management" aka : actions to 'replicate' Swarming (Splits) or not (Swarm) by making sure they have a 'Newer Queen' for yes the 'pending' Scottish 🏴 coming Winter ! 🤭 OK it's only July, but prep ASAP, before Autumn, or what you call 'Fall.' ocurrs.) It comes around so quickly here.
Alternatively :
Make sure they have plenty of 'already made' drawn Comb to lay in.
Or to give them "something to do" to (Prevent Swarming) by making them Draw down 'Starter Strips' to make 'Natural Comb' either "Wired" to Extract, or Wireless : so to have lovely Natural 'Cut Comb' Honey. 👍
Experience to date :
If Bees have desired 'space' or 'work' to do : no Swarm occurs !

Bees do show they are either Happy / or Unhappy in their 'Status,' I'm sure of it.
If I get "Stung" then they are unhappy.
I always 'greet them' eg by saying Morning Girls !
And if "they are Nippy" (Scots for Ansgst or Angry!) They buzz me for sure !
Usually they need 'some Capped Brood, Bees in all Stages (BIAS) or possibly adding in a 'found Queen Cell' off another Colony, that's made several ones. Aka Capped Cells with associated 'Heirs & Spares.' This Year, they kindly made x2 'QC's nicely spaced on x1 Frame : in Several locations: easy to 'act' upon. 👍
Started the Season with x5 Colonies. Now up to x14 !!!
(OK Boxes with Faux Floors and Feed Sack Roofs. Some will get 'combined' others
I will 'offer' on to (Newbie Beeks) at my local Bee Club. Pass it on ! Learn 'Bee' keeping. . .🤗
By checking the Zippy (Stingy) Colony, I usually find : they are either 'have a Failing Queen' or they are preparing to 'Swarm.'
. . .NOT on my Watch ! 🙄
I hate 'Heights and Ladders'.
Tip :
I go through the whole Colony, 'See' what attitude they are in, "show" me, and either remove all Frames, into a 'Spare holding Box' and go through each Frame visually ! 👀 And then only add back into the Brood Chamber : Capped Brood, some Resources like Bee Bread (Pollen that's 'preserved') and of course a Frame of Honey or two !
And at the same time : Add a Frame of Bees with their x1 or x2 Queen Cells. Close Up them all Up Hive wise, for 48hrs, to prevent 'return drift' and leave them for a further "x14 Days, to come and go as they please ! To make and crown a new Maj !" (Beek Newbies ) :
QC's get Capped on 9th +/- Day and Hatch on the16th Day !) So by doing regular x14th Day "Hive Inspections" you will capture 'any' action before it "happens." 😉
All the other Bees & Frames get added into a two tier Nuc, say x5 over x5. Enough room to 'Build Up' again (make their own QC's) or see if a 'Queen' is laying or not?

The 4th of July was 'our Right to Vote "Out" our previous awful UK 🇬🇧 Government ! Our own 'Independence' Day, kind of, to say "Cheerio" to the last Office of useless Westminster MP's !
Let's say these MPs were like a 'Colony of Bees in a Drone laying Pattern.' Unsaveable !
And needed to be 'Shook Out'.
And started again. 🤭
Now we have a 'New Leader' offering "Change" and better 'Democracy' ! Harmony once more. . .
Already, in its first day of Buisness, 'this' Hive is not 'Humming in Alarm (denial.)
It can get on with the business of being a 'fairer Society.' And hopefully : make everyone feel like they are in the 'Clover' ! 😎

Your opening 'Footage' kind of reminded me of in 'Remand' Colonies ! All your Bees seem to be in Stripes. . . 🤭
My Bees here are more 'Native Black Bee' in Colour. Dark, and Smaller in stature. But they are "Hard as Nails." ! Do very well in our Colder Climate. .
So much so : 'I have treated myself' to x2 New : Black Bee 'Breeder Queens' who will arrive on Wednesday.
(Bought/Reserved back in Jan) but as the Weather here has been Wet on Wet, delays in Mating (Laying Outcome) to be 'seen' was delayed somewhat. But hey a June 'delivery' now in July is no big deal. . . And the wild native "Bramble" in nearby Woodlands are in full Flower, to "Welcome" them. . . Thats a Win Win. No June 'Gap' this Year so far. All is still Blooming, offering Nectar and Pollen in abundance. 👍

Suggestion : Would think he might like 'Warre Hives' : smaller, lighter, and easy to make with Grandpa ! . . . 😎
I think they work so much better with 'Frames' over that of Top Bars. (Easier for Quinn to Manage, not having brace Comb to deal with.)
I make both : using Pallet Wood. . .Us fellow Beeks who have Chickens 🐔 and Ducks🦆get their Feed Delivered on 'Pallets, 'so Warre 'Boxes' get Made often: a nice Weekend 'project' especially when 'Real' Hive Boxes run out. 🤭 Quick I need another Box. Bees do to.
Cut the Timber in its rough state. Glue Screw and Paint 'Construction.'
The Bees love to 'glue' that rough Interior surface with Propolis. Makes a easy to make Secure, Warm and 'Healthy Hive for nil £'s $'s.
Also like to make 'Nuc Warres' too, (less Frames are used.)
And they are narrower than the 'Traditional' Warre Hive which is 'Square in Design.' Both can be 'Stacked' when you make several Boxes : Allowing the Bees to expand Colony wise.

Warre Frames 'nest' nicely inside US Langstroth Frames. And fit into the UK National as well. Easy to 'seed' Bees from a Smaller Hive / into bigger ones. In Boosting Population, getting QC's made. And a nice Hive to show a Newbies the 'Workings' of a Bee Hive. No Heavy Lifting, whats not to like. 👍

Question 4 Black foundation! With only 1 year experience I now have 5 hives. I have prewaxed yellow Rite cell, Black Rite Cell and Black Canacel foundation, I NOW coat all my plastic foundation with additional natural BEES WAX. As an experiment I PREVIOUSLY did not put EXTRA wax on SEVERAL FRAMES I found the bees still drew out bot the Rite cell and Canacel foundations.
Heavy waxed foundation is preferred by the bees. BUT, they "can" draw their comb on any surface. Even a thin coating of beeswax in insentive to work it. Thicker coatings simply mean the bees don't need as much of their own wax production to get it going. Thanks for sharing.

No micro-plastics from Flow-Honey... to date. That's something I keep a keen eye on since I have so many Flow-Supers.

I use dixie/ brawny h700 ,hydro entangled wood fiber,sheets,towels theres also flax version...for hive beetle ,the get fluffed up,and feet get tangled

Sounds good. I tried swifter sheets and caught more tangled bees than beetles. Sad to see the dead ones. I don’t know why others don’t address this. I have a HORRIBLE hive beetle problem and am trying different traps. Suggestions by viewers appreciated; Fred I know you don’t have many beetles
Re deer and voles, I have both and a herd of goats, and they eat almost everything EXCEPT spearmint and catnip. Bees love both! Spearmint will absolutely take over, so be careful!
I do miss my goats! The voles... == make me want to take up raising black rat snakes.
@@FrederickDunn I DO raise black rat snakes! Got a wild trio whose female tops about 7 feet… I gladly put up with losing chicken eggs and a few adult quail to keep the voles in check. I know it’s sad for them, but I get an evil grinch smile whenever I hear a nest of voles squeaking while being pillaged by the snakes..voles are demons.
I like OA Dribble or spray the best, only for the fact of the dangers oa vaporization...the downfall of dribble is potential of losing a queen, it works VERY good but last year i lost 2 queens..im going to do dribble with glycerin this year instead of sugar water.....i really love milkweed, so many awesome varieties here in ohio, i like the showy milkweed & the orange type. Im going to harvest the seeds this year from 3 nearby nature preserves & bring them to my land. Behind me is the lake erie /wheeling wv railroad tracks & ive been lining both sides of the tracks with wild flowers, looks awesome!
Fred follow up on the sugar water feeding in Brisbane Australia. Our winter temps are no lower then 10dec C they are flying everyday. Only give them processed white sugar. Supers don’t have any honey left so I started feeding the sugar water.

Travelled all over 'OZ' in '80's but didn't do a stop over at 'Brissie.' (Brisbane, within Queensland, North West Oz.)
Mainly did the Outback and Desert Region : not much Forage out in the Dusty Dunes.
Plenty of Roos, Emus and the odd Snake. And lots of 'Brown Beer Bottle Glass (!) 🤭
I thought beans (including soybeans) are wind pollinated. I’ve never seen a bee of any type on any bean flowers.
Hi Gigi, the soybeans do not "need" the bees for pollination. Even corn doesn't "need" bees to pollinate. But the bees work them and gather pollen from corn and collect nectar from soy flowers. They soybean yields are higher when honey bee hives are nearby. Let's also consider coffee beans, those plants don't need the bees, but production can be boosted by 50% or more when honey bees are pollinating those plants. So, just consider the bees as produce boosters! :)

Black foundation sluffs off the comb too easily when I'm working with it out in the sun.
I can see where direct sunlight would defnitely heat the black comb much faster than white etc... thanks for mentioning that.
If I were to start over knowing what I know now, I would have Apimaye 7 frame nuc towers ( 3-4 deep boxes) for bees and comb production and Apimaye 10 frame brood boxes with flow supers for honey. Eventually my wooden ware will rot away and my apiary will approach that model.
They will definitely last longer than my woodenware :) I'm gradually being won over. Yes, having a flow-super on the apimaye brood and bottom board configuration seems like a handy move. :)
Thanks Fred for the heads up on the effects of oxalic acid to our human eyes makes me wonder what are we doing to our friends the bees complex eyes. Bob Denny did an oxalic acid to a observation Hive and I noticed that all the bees ran as fast as they could from oxalic acid.
The bees haven't demonstrated ill effects from the OAV that I know of. Not sure about Bob's testing, but my observations have been that they initially move away, and then return to normal activities quickly after initial blast. In your location, how long does the Liquid Fence deer repellent seem to stay affective after spraying if you don’t get rainfall to wash it off? Deer population and availability of other forage will have some affect on that I’m sure. If they’re starving they’ll eat it sooner. My property is right next to 40,850 acres of wildlife corps property and a 29,000 reservoir sets within it. Plenty of water for them in our hot summers. Deer are a pain here. I’m 1 mile from a no hunting state park and you can always see deer in there as soon as the sun sets. They know they’re safe there.
You can still smell it on the plants after a decent rain. So the deer can likely still smell it. I've been refreshing it every 6-7 days. Still working... so far.
Hi Fred just wanted to say thanks for the microscope answer, still unsure whether there is more to what you can see than just how much magnification there is but I at least have a starting point. I'll be buying the scope you use as soon as I can put aside enough money that my wife won't immediately murder me and hide my body in the desert for spending so much money.

I am going to have to get my hives set up sooner rather than later! I have been participating in my beekeeper assoc. classes and their hive dives. It’s giving me the bug to have my own bees! (I can only legally have 3 hives total at my place, so I will have to manage that as well). Looking forward to getting my 2-queen Keeper’s hive as well.

I understand about the hive beetle trap Mr Fred but in the South sometimes you got to do what you got to do because the high Beatles will kill a beehive a strong one if you don't take drastic measures sometimes just to have them in there just so no I agree

@wadebarnes6720 I too am in the south (west GA), spreading GrubEx around helps. Also someone else mentioned a natural fiber sheet to use in place of the synthetic ones.
Will you be opening up that Ivey-b hive? Have the bees attached the frames to the cover? I'm struggling to get mine started. I had one hive swarm, but they gathered way too high in a spruce tree to collect. I started a nuc with two frames of capped brood and nurse bees but queen-less...I'm hoping I can get them to move in with a purchased mated queen.
I keep putting that off as it's going to be a big job. They have connected evrything to that lucite cover. BUT, I need to bite the bullet and just get in there. The bees are using it all fine, but the practicality of accessing the frames is challenging. In the opening sequence you can hear the bees chewing the Ivry B entrance as it's delaminating. I'll do a full review and inspection one day soon. It will be a stand alone video.
Thanks for stressing the safety when using OAV. I've heard people say they don't wear a mask that they just stand down wind. I just have to shake my head. I thought more about eye protection in case a cap on the vaporizer blew off, not so much the vapor itself. Thanks for making us all think more. Part of teaching right?

Thank you so much, I try to stress that failing SAFE is best. Yes, I've heard that advice that all you have to do is stand upwind so the fog travels away. I would not want to be the one who gave that advice and then had someone suffer from exposure. When It comes to phones, just read the blogs regarding the best cameras and camera performance. My phone is more of an image tool than communication device. I'll stay neutral on that, but just suggest reading the specs and look for samples.
Just went thru 4. ,3 are queenright,one had 6 q cells capped, made me happy to see 2 queens ,and larva,ill be mixing up some light syrup,using frame feeders, wondering if I should put some cells into nucs with some resources since I have a couple, might just mitigate a july swarm impulse
Go for it ! . . .
Queen Cells with Bees 'taken' from another Hive BIAS (Bees in all Stages) work much better than a 'Walk Away Split.' This needs the "Bees" to make their own QC's but often the added Bees 'drift back' to where they came from (dwindle the Splits Population.)
As a 'nearly to be Born Queen' has an attracting 'Smell' of a new Maj : kind of keeps the Bees in 'attendance.' 👍

Tip :
I would add x2 QC's to this 'New Colony.' A Main and a Spare ! In that Bees "will choose" the best one. And or the first to Hatch, will do the Ruling (make dead) on the later one. 🤭
NE Indiana, poor flow so far. Zero from basswood. Working clover, hyssop, coneflower, mountain mint. Lovely temperatures for humans, cool for bees. Very, very dry. Clover drying up.

One of my hives started bringing out almost fully developed drone brood out. Is that a sign of varoa or something else? Looks like its only drone brood.
If resources drop... they can pull drones even though they are not being fed anymore. Also, if some VSH honey bees detect varroa in the cells, they are apt to pull them and drop them outside, or uncap and recap those cells. There are several possibilities.
I do have a question that hopefully gets selected for next weeks Q and A. During my past few inspections I have noticed an abundance of pollen on several frames in a couple of my hives. Earlier this year in March and April we had an abnormal amount of rain for Southern California and during the months of both May and June, we had abnormally cold weather. The hives have had a slow start to the season and now that things are warming up, It doesn’t appear that the bees are consuming the pollen. My concern is, instead of being honey bound, can it become pollen bound? How would you advise solving this dilemma? Thanks in advance

Great question! It's on my list for next Friday! The short answer is that you can wash the pollen out of those cells if you want to. The bees can ignore pollen that's been stored for a long period of time as they use the fresh in-coming pollen near the brood area. There are other ways to deal with it, and I'll cover that in my response.

I want to reuse my wood frames that have had wax foundation that was cut out. The groove is still filled with wax and probably propolis. Any suggestions for getting that out. Scraping doesn't work verry well.
I use a heat gun and scraper together. Works well, and leaves the woodenware nicely sealed with wax.
I have black Pierco double waxed + I add wax seems to work good, & I just got 2,000 pieces of deep & medium yellow 2 weeks ago & they're drawing it just fine as well. i like wood frames only.. I received a few black plastic frames a couple years ago in nucs I bought & they just seem flimsy , not a fan
If I use the solid plastic frames, Acorn and Ceracell make the best versions in my opinion. But I'm gradually shifting all of my frames to wood. Pierco full plastic frames deformed easily. Mann Lake versions were brittle.

I haven't seen shavings of the wooden frames coming off, if that's what you're asking? If you scrape the wooden frame during uncapping or scarping burr comb etc... the health issues that are associated with plastics are not the same.

8-year old dynamo who always wants to be in the bee yard doing "something". He has really boosted things around here. We are spending more time with the bees than ever before.
They are not really into the clover Knapweed is out now they rather that then clovers do you have brown Knapweed
They go after whatever is providing the highest sugar content :) We have Knapweed... I get some criticism over that plant as it's listed as an invasive. The bees definitely know where to go... :)
Hey Fred question for ya so one of my hives I found queen cells so I found my queen put her in a nuc with brood and bees and took out all the cells and put them into mating nucs I left
2 capped amd one almost capped will they still swarm or did I kill the swarm some say yes and others say I should have taken all the cells out but one what’s your thoughts
