My grandfather used to drive the rolling chassis down to the coach works in Connersville, IN and the finished ones back to Auburn, IN. He figured he drove more different Auburns, Cords, and Duesies more miles than just about anyone as it was about a hundred miles each way. The rolling chassis didn't even have seats so he strapped a milk crate to the chassis and sat on that.
Isn't it illegal to steal milk crates? College kid dorm room furniture....Just kidding. Good piece of history!!
@@kevinhiggler2896 Storing LP Records. In the late 70's they changed the dimensions ever so slightly to avoid being good for records
Wow!!!!
@@MicrophonicFool Interesting, I assume they made them smaller. Good financial move. I once read 20% of theft in stores is from employees.
Jay could sell a Duesenberg any day. He loves them you can tell. My dad ( like Jay he was a car guy's car guy) used to talk about them but I never really knew about them really til I discovered Jay and his garage. Thanks Jay. I'll never afford collective cars but you have helped pass the torch. Since dad died I don't really have anybody to talk cars with. You are more of an older brother but you help with the void. Thanks for sharing all these pieces of unique history with us.
16:18 I think every person watching this show can agree what Dave said was perfect. Thank you Jay for appreciating, understanding and promoting the history these cars are. This stuff is really valuable. We are lucky to have Jay show all this to us around the world.
Well said I'm a fan in Northern England
I love the way Jay brings a car to life, putting them into perspective against their contemporaries and showing his passion for them all rather than just showing one as a well preserved ol' car.
Oh man, this is so badass. The Ford/Duesenberg hybrid was featured in a "boys fiction" book from 1952. I never thought I would see one. Thanks, Mr. Blake and Family for saving it, and thanks, Jay for featuring it.
That car is something else. Absolutely amazing. Not a hot rod nut, but the history and engineering are something to behold.
I love the look of vintage hot rods.
The conversation is another jewel.
They wanted to add more GoPro's but the windshield wasn't big enough.
You never have enough cameras...
Jay's worth $350 million, 50 of that in cars, so yea, there's no car he can't afford, but this is a family heirloom, so unless they fall on hard times they will never sell it, and Jay knows that.
Needs more cameras
@@donh1572 , Reminds me of the guy riding the cow... MMMmmooooore!
What a great episode. Sometimes the more things change, the more they remain the same. In this case hot rodding's past is still the future. Now this is a real doozy!
Jay you are thee most enjoyable host of a Car Show than any other; because your heart is in it all in. This car is interesting because you leave no stone unturned about it's history. In my opinion you are the Best (clean joked) living comedian in the World. You find every little thing you can turn into a joke and making people happy. Thank you Jay Leno for being "The Best!" We NEVER get tired of you OR Your JOKES!
This is one of the most amazing hotrod I've ever seen. Maybe the most.
That thing is incredible. Perfect mix of 'oddball' and 'traditional hotrod'. Jay says "I'm not a hotrod/custom car guy", but the hotrods/customs he features are top tier. More early rods like this, Jay. This stuff is why this is CZcams's best car channel.
I really appreciate Jay's enthusiasm and knowledge. It comes across. Thanks Jay. Love ya.
Jay was salivating over this car the whole time, just as I would have been. This is one of the coolest cars I’ve ever seen, thank you for preserving AND DRIVING IT.
This car is so awesome. Duesenberg's I think are the greatest American cars ever produced. They were literally decades ahead of their time in the 1920's and 30's. They had a Straight 8 engine in 1928 that made 320 horsepower. A 1932 Ford Flathead V8 had 85 horsepower. That is just so amazing. One of the coolest hot rods I have ever seen
Thanks Jay. Certainly a rare one. I enjoyed watching you guys sharing the appreciation for this piece of automotive history. Obviously a lot of folks just don't get it.
Recipe for rich and simple French Onion Soup: Melt butter with olive oil in an 8 quart stock pot on medium heat. Add onions and continually stir until tender and translucent. Do not brown the onions.Add beef broth, sherry and thyme. Season with salt and pepper, and simmer for 30 minutes.Heat the oven broiler.Ladle soup into oven safe serving bowls and place one slice of bread on top of each (bread may be broken into pieces if you prefer). Layer each slice of bread with a slice of provolone, 1/2 slice diced Swiss and 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese. Place bowls on cookie sheet and broil in the preheated oven until cheese bubbles and browns slightly.
Nice... you didn't mention the Cams Grind Profile, i.e. lift or duration etc.. no worries, to each his Own..
I love Jay and everything he does but its funny how they discussed every detail twice in this episode
Jay Leno you are the top's thank you very much,I are old now 75 years 0ld.....
I love that deep maroon color! Perfect color for this car.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
J really wanted that car. You can tell he wasn't joking about offering double of 35k
It was double that, 70K
Dude aint look like he found it funny lol
Marlon Johnson I would pay 35k,anyone would. It's worth a million bucks
He WAS joking - that car has got to be worth millions now. But, I think Jay is seriously jealous of their ownership of it!
Cool video!
Very cool owner.....definitely a cool car.....👍👍
What a nice bloke! Real mutual appreciation of the history and significance and the need for preservation of old gems like this. Excellent episode, Jay! Thanks so much.
Incredible story.
Love it , thanks for sharing!
That was awesome. Never knew it existed.
Blake Machine knows its craft; their 36 Buick Century fits with a normally aspirated straight eight has made it to six high speed runs at the Bonneville SpeedWeek, and captured four high speed class records. It's a pleasure to know Mr Blake, and his insight to American racing history.
I think Jay's Garage is far better than his comedy or late show work. His passion, appreciation and broad understanding of cars such as this gives us so much insight that we might not otherwise have about automotive history. Greatly appreciated, I just wish I wasn't a poor Kia owner, haha.
The name of the man is Jay Leno and his show is called Jay Leno's garage so why Kay?
Haha, missed the typo, hopefully that's only a misdemeanor, correction made.
Lavon Watson I used to watch him all the time back in the day. I even went to a taping of the Tonight Show when Jay was still there back in Oct. '13. He even sent me an autographed picture once. Speaking of Kia's, I'm going to go look at (and probably buy) one today.😄
HE WASN'T VERY FUNNY, MORE CORNY.
Love these cars! A local business owner from where I live had a Duesenberg. Thanks Jay!
In line straight powerplant of these cars would have also been easier to work with unlike V engines....
Hey Fidel is Justin Trudeau really your son?
arggh!
I grew up 10 minutes from Auburn, Indiana. I have met Dean Kruse. The Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg museum is Amazing!
I Love Hearing these Stories of these Rare Vehicles being Saved ...Thanks Jay, i love watching all your Videos
14:05 that sure looks like smoke. Good thing for that radiator fan
Ya, I replayed that about 5 times to get a better look. I think it's steam because they talked about the radiator RIGHT after that.
7litre, In line 8 cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder DOHC in 1934? FANTASTICAR!! Lets bring back the defunct Duesenberg brand model!!
fidel catsro Actually built in the late 1920's and titled and sold as a 1934.
yeah you are correct!! heres one more documentary on this lovely car brand!! Spain emperor and Indian maharaja's loved them too!!
czcams.com/video/Lb-bhhUyrQc/video.html
these cars cost 30 times more than the normal price of cars back then!!
Sounds amazing. Absolute work of art. Thanks for sharing.
New favourite car on the channel so far, that is just awesome!! Love the way Jay looks over at the guy after he offers double jokingly but deadly serious at the same time. The guy doesn't even flinch!!
8:23 i thought he was gonna say dont tell mere 😂
I miss jay in his favorite denims 😫

would love to see the old denims again :(
Absolutely beautiful car
Great piece! When I was writing my book, Time Traveler, I used the Duesenberg SJ with the supercharger option (1932 on). In researching the various cars of the era, I was floored when I saw the specs on the Duesenberg's engine with double overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and 320 horsepower! By comparison, a Mercedes 540K (k = Supercharger) of the same era, put out 180hp. The "State of the Art" Mercedes 540K was capable of 110mph, while the supercharged Duesenberg could actually do 137 mp!. No knock against Mercedes-Benz at all, it's just that the Duesenberg might have well been from another planet in the late 20's and 1930s! Totally amazing!
Another great car and a wonderful guest.
Agreed. I feel like I could grab a coffee and talk to that guy for hours at a car meet!
Thats crazy cool...wow....Dave !!!! get excited mate....lol
Omg I saw this car years ago at Blake’s machine shop in south Phoenix. They did some machine work on my 35 Packard. Great story.
What a beautiful car. I never really appreciated old cars, I always focused on late model cars and hot rods, until I started watching Jays videos. Now I really enjoy the old vehicles, and the stories behind them.👍
If something's worth saying once, it's worth saying three or four times...lol
haha I was about to say I think they're going senile
@@casualmanmann I was wondering about that. I thought I heard him make the same comments repeatedly.
I think that they just ran out of things to say..
I watched parts of it again to see if Jay was distracted when the guy was talking to him, I've read comments that Jay is a bad listener, I guess they weren't just trolling, weird.
I noticed it too, kinda funny. I wonder if they were thinking the audio of the questions asked during the drive might not come across so good with the open cockpit and roaring J, and ran the same q&a afterward to be sure they had it, then just included if because they had it for filler
July 1961 Hot Rod Magazine - p.74, a V-16 Cadillac powered 29 Ford hot rod roadster. Motor came out of a wrecked 32 Cadillac sedan. More about the V-16 Caddy rod here if you're interested: www.hemmings.com/blog/2017/11/10/sweet-16/
Talk about One of One!!!
I'm glad his father was in the moment to recognize the car as it came to auction.....and here we are later on down the road!
Awesome, awesome, awesome stuff! Hey Jay, thanks for sharing this video.
Why bother taking the time to watch and comment if you’re only going to complain? This is purely entertainment. Enjoy it or don’t watch it!
andy brown complaining about complaints. Just so ya know.
Why bother taking the time to read the comments if you're only going to complain?
They got you there Andy... 😆
"I'll give you twice that right now" Jay looks longingly at the owner for a 'yes'
Thanks again Jay for doing what you do.
What an awesome car! I'd never heard of it before, but I'll never forget it!
omg - this is cool!
SENCILLAMENTE HERMOSO!!!
What an incredible car! Thanks for sharing gentlemen.
Wow
Jay leno is drooling.
Amazing machine 👍
Jay that's a piece of fine art
I love the sound of the motor, this is an awesome car.
Phenomenal bit of history there, Bravo !
The car traded in for it went for $35,000. Jay "I'll give you double for it" lol!
I love how Jay looks to see the reaction to the offer at 10:00 ....we were all thinking the same thing, hoping beyond hope
Jay has spent a lot of time on concourse and at auctions. This particular model is a no-ceiling car. My opinion is worth less than a pro appraiser, which is worth very little, and I'd say this is a $400k car easy. If the right old guys show up on the right auction day, it's a 7-figure car. He clearly would love to have it but he doesn't want to bid against it. He's also buffing the value for this guy cause that's how Jay rolls.
I was gonna say, seems like an offer needs to be much much higher than that
He was saying himself that it’s a family heirloom then in the car he made an offer. Come on Jay, that’s not even joke worthy, have some respect.
Yeah good one. Jay knows this is worth millions these and this gentleman probably would not sell it :D (even that Jay could afford any price).
Anyone else catch the smoke billowing out at 14:06?
No dream then... :-()
Right before they mentioned how great it stayed cool in traffic.
The plastic window in the valve cover leaking???
That plastic window hasn’t lived this long and decided just now to crap out.
I'm quite sure it's steam...
It would never be a Dusesy engine (I'm not that well off any longer and never will be again) but I've love to build a straight 8 rod like this. Long, low and beautiful. Truly one of the most extraordinary early 'rods.
If you do build one post some videos of it and good luck.
Find a Buick straight-8! At least they're OHV.
Jay that would look really great in your garage! Thank you for posting this.
That engine was manufactured by Lycoming for Duesenberg, as were a lot of Auburn and Cord engines of that period.
Yep, My Dad and I, with a good friend, once built a log splitter with a 4 cylinder Lycoming airplane engine to power it.
Tracer -- Holy crap, talk about overkill, LOL..... I bet it was cool though !!
E.L. Cord bought the Lycoming engine company in 1927 and made it part of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenburg manufacturing company. Auburns were using Lycoming built engines even prior to that.
You are right Lycoming did manufacture engines for Duesenberg but it is fully a Duesenberg design. It was probably a wise decision to have Lycoming manufacture their engines as Lycoming was a well known engine manufacturer after WWI, but just about any willing engine manufacturer could have produce the Duesenberg design. It's the design itself that makes that engine so spectacular.
Lycoming produced engines for the 50 Tuckers produced also. They used helicopter engines because they were overengineered. Another groundbreaking Tucker innovation that the big three couldn't compete with.
i dunno how this gets through the edit, but this isn't the first video where the same stories, explanations, and questions get repeated. I enjoy the content, but seriously, it just drags on when the same stuff repeats
Probably just a coincidence but it seems that from the moment that Jay started wearing the t shirts, the quality of the videos went from excellent to very bad.. With this one being the worst of all. Isn't there any quality control before they bring the vid out? To dark and very bad editing.. What a shame!
Old men tend to repeat themselves
Man, this is the history I can relate with! She is so beautiful!!
Awesome best Ep in a while
Man that's cool
Dylan Thomas DAMN Jay has the Life
That window in the valve cover is about as dumb as a screen door on a submarine!
I was waiting for him to say he has the original cover back at shop safe and sound.
Man I've been waiting for Jay to put up a video with a Duesenberg in it and that is one beautiful car that's for sure thanks to Jay for putting up a Duesenberg on here much love to Jay Leno
That was great fun ! I love when significant old hot rods are preserved. That being said, I'd like to say that was great fun! I love when significant old hot rods are preserved.
I hear ya! I hear ya!
So glad that Dave and his father got this. Foose would have made it 2-tone and stuck some fugly billet 20s on it.
AZCobraman and you are correct
Sam Foose actually built some nice cars. Chip Foose is very skilled, but yeah- he's stuck in that 90s look with the billet 20s and stuff.
...I wouldn't want Chips life....seen him in a burger joint the other day and NO one ...but me and my group left him alone to eat his burger. he was very nice to everyone.
20’s...lol more like 24
I like Chip's designs... most of them are tasteful
Family Duesenberg (Düsenberg) was German familiy. The Brothers where Born in matorf-kirchheide.
Shure they build a Magnifisent Engine 🤗
Its not a German car relax
❤❤❤❤❤
Better than any classroom, thanx Jay.
I remember when it was featured in Hot Rod Magazine back in the 60s, under the name of Geronimo, and I fell in love with it then
Wow! Nice-looking hot rod. Sounds marvelous, too!
The colour in the video looks better now.
Did anyone else notice the Duesy smoking at around 14:06?
was just going to mention that... something is burnin'
Yep.
Something was cooking
Right after the smoke/steam came out Jay said it cools wonderfully with the small radiator lol.
Probably not a pressurised radiator? Spitting a bit of water out on the exhausts once it warms up
It's apparently something behind the car, not the car itself. It doesn't show up in any other scene, even when Jay steps on the pedal. The two in the car don't mention it or even pause in their conversation. You can bet that if such a rare engine started unexpectedly emitting any smoke or steam they would immediately notice and stop the car.
What a sweet ride!
Wow, that is the sweetest sounding engine I have ever heard!!!!
It's a straight-eight Jag!
just when you think you know everything about cars...
14:07 Overheating 14:20 "It seems to cool OK"
i think it was steam evaporating because these engines didnt have any fan propellor!
This Duce' does, listen to the Video again, the Owner added a fan propellor = desert temperatures.
That was awesome Jay! Thanks for sharing! 👍
Now that is a Duesy! Great view of hot-rods start.
"this was a Ferrari before Ferrari" Amazing car. If Duesenberg were around today, would it be America's Rolls Royce?
Yes
More like America's Bentley - a luxury car with power.
Can’t believe he didn’t cover the origin of the term “a real duesy” in that historical old man ramble. At least twice ;)
Gorgeous!
Another great video jay! Keep it up!
Hey JLG - Love your videos, but the last few videos are still just way to dark and look weird. I dont know what changed, but the previous format/videos were much better.
Some young millennial getting too fancy with After Effects. They think these videos need a ton of filters and effects and it just ends up ruining it.
Il give double that right now... Kidding not kiddding...you can tell leno wants it
Rabit Le Savage Show ..... kidding on the square.
In 1978 I started work at the largest Mercedes-Benz dealership in Australia. Over 30 years I have worked on MB, Rolls-Royce/Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and countless other makes. In the last 13 years I have have taught and written curriculum for military and civilian apprentice mechanics. But here in 2021 I cannot think of a superior brand to one that I read of as a teenager in the 1970s. RIP Fred and Augie, you still have no peers 100 years later.
Amazing car....thanks for sharing.
Is it just me, or did they repeat every thing at least twice? Two different days of filming? Was the editor drunk off his butt when he put it together?
Even at his garage, I notice him asking the same question twice. That's what you get without a script.
You mean, the, uh, former editor ? lol, it's ok with me I love to hear a good story twice.
Two men of a certain age.
They drove by that casino at least twice and the light was different each time. I thought all those cameras on the top of the glass were some kind of weird decoration when I first saw it.
Matt Shuey I noticed that. Odd they both act like the questions are being asked the first time.
Half the car is engine and the other half is cab
TOTALLY AMAZING!!!!!!!!
I LOVE this car! Super cool.
Hey jay, that's not Johnny Pascucci's Duesenberg is it?, kidding, I got to ride in Johnny's Duesy back in the late 80s
...." WOW, that 's a DOOZIE. ! "
I am in love with this car 😍
Thank you Jay
