Yeah some of it was just the opposition being better, like the 82 and 91 Rose Bowls. The 85 Rose Bowl was just a bad day that likely would not repeat in 9 subsequent matchups against UCLA. Four fumbles by Ronnie Harmon and a dropped TD pass. That put us in a big hole against a very opportunistic defense. We tried, but we just ran out of gas as they had an excellent run game. I still believe we were the better team, just not on that day. UCLA earned it by being better that day, and it helped them that it was essentially a home game.
@@Mr.56Goldtop Yup. But in all fairness I think only Miami could have given Washington a challenge that year. You saw glimpses of that 91 team in the Rose Bowl against Iowa. The Huskies were just so damned quick on defense, creating absolute havoc at the LOS and in the backfield, smothering man coverage in the secondary (ask Desmond Howard.) Their offense had sufficient big play threats to insure opposing offenses are in a hole and in predictable situations. Against that fast, aggressive defense? That's was certain doom.
The Big 10 had like a 4 or 5 team tie for 1st place in 1990. Don't remember how Iowa won the tiebreaker but they were not the best team in that conference

Iowa goes 8-3 ( 6-2 ) in 1990 goes to rose bowl. Then goes 10-1 ( 7-1 ) in 1991 an goes to the holiday bowl?
Yes because their one conference loss was to Michigan who was also 10-1 and 8-0 in conference play.
Saved them the embarrassment of getting crushed by the 1991 Washington Huskies. Michigan was the unfortunate souls that year.
